In a few short years in Divi-

Steve Smith hit the Mil on

After all, did you get that big

How about not playing the

After all, shouldn't they be

Regarding your Nov. 12 arti-

theories can coexist: evolution at

Thank you for the opportunity
to comment on this important
question. Schools would be well
advised to avoid teaching evolu-
tion as anything but a theory
Contrary to Martha Flour's
understanding, the theory of evo-
lution has 11ot been proved
Many scientists who subscribe to
belief in the theory now adnut
this. Michael Bede has written an
interesting book from the per·
spective of a micrQb1ologist
called *Darwin's Black Box," in
which he describes in detail the
mechanisms that enable us to
see, blood to clot, etc., pointing
out that no one has come up with
any plausible idea how these
processes could have evolved

claim.
The fact that no fossils have
been found to illustrate transi·
tiondl forms between species also
is wornsome to Darwin's follow-

understanding why some people
believe that the universe and its
inhabitants are the work of an

Wendy Leece is mistakenly
asserting her religious beliefs .as
equal to scientific knowledge.
There are two creation myth sto-
ries m the Bible that deal with
human relationships to nature
and other men. They are reli-
gious stones of values and lo lit-
eralize them as history is to do
them violence.
Creationism·is a concept that
cannot be observed and is sup-
ported only by belief. Believing
it does not make it so or even
probable. Evolution lS a natural
process that can be observed by
any honest sdenbst There may
be debate as to just how naturil.l
selection operates but there is no
doubt tl'\at there is a process
Evolution is empirically demon·
strable. Creationism is not and
should not be taught as an alter-
native to scientific mquiry. ·
Myth should be taug~t in reli-
gious studies and literature class·
es where it belongs. Let's keep
ignorant religious indoctrination
out of our public schools.
JAMES E. YOUNG
Newport Beach
Regarding the teaching of
evolution and/or creationism in
the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District, l believe theory
should be taught as theory and
truth should be taught as truth.
In my yea.rs involved with
schools in four states, I have
found that the theory of evolution
has been taught as fact, or truth,
and the fact of the Creation bas
.been taught as theory. How did
th.is happen? There is nothing to
support the theory of ev~lution as
fact. There is endless evidence to
support creationism as fact. And
there is nothing to support the
theory that God used evolution to
create this edrth and all its
mhabitants, because we then
must suppose that evolution is
fact, dJld there is nothing to sup-
port evolution as fact.
Don't allow wishy-washiness
to wreak havoc on our children.
Teach theory as theory and fact
as fact Do not teach our children
something that is not true as
truth, and something that is true
as theory. Do not lie to our chil-
dren.

I agree with Wendy Leecc.
Schools do not teach enough
about the metaphysical world.
When I send my kids to New·
port-Mesa schools, I would like
them to learn about astrology,
bow to conduct a seance, how to
read tarot cards, and other skills
needed to become a good psy-
chic. I always see commeradls
for the Psyctuc Friends Network,
so I know there is a whole indus-
try with plenty of JObs for good
skilled psychics, but schools are
not teaching kids these useful
skills and knowledge. It is a
shame schools only teach atheis-

l do not live in the district.
However. in any district or public
school in this country, it seems
that true education would best
be served by letting students
know that there a·re essentially
two pomts of view regarding
evolution that, in all probability,
will never be absolutely proved
one way or another. U a definite
stand is taken by public educa·
tors. there will be millions of
Amencans who will disdgree. So
why not explain the two theoncs
and let indJvidual citizens decide
for themselves. And because
some of the beliefs are religious,
let's keep religion and the state
separate. ·

COSTA MESA -If Charlie

Like a bunch of overgrown

year-round lo· bombdrd Jordan's

'Peanuts'-themed Chnstmas dec-

Jordan, 47, has been decorat-

"He stctrted when he was just a

mother, Ruth
"It sort of got Qui oJ hand,• Jim

Humor and pranks are com-

JLDl's fncnds, Robin Hardison

the production for the past 20

said. Work picks up around
August and comes to d frenzy in
the weeks before Thanksgwing.

something retires and something
new comes ...
Wangler remembers rus par-
ents bringing hun to see the
house when he was a child. He
later met Jordan as an adult and
began helping him with the deco-
rations. Now his own children are
getting en1oyment out of the Jor-

GUNMAN
CONTINUED FROM 1
'Department's f1nt conversation
w:ith Gen rako . · •
Nelson walked out the front
Cioor followed by Gencrakos, who
held a gun in his hand. When
they reached the parking lot, the
police sniper.shot Generakos.
Police did not explain why the
sniper thought it was necessary to
fire at that time. The county dis-
trict attorney's office will investi-
gate the officer-involved shoot-
ing.
Police also couldn't confum
whether the gun was loaded.
However, they did say the gun-
man was shot m the upper body.
Nelson wasn't injured.
Wearing a T-shirt and blue
jeans, Generdkos' body Jay
spread eagle m the parking lot
with his arms crossed over his
stomac.h. He lay by a flag pole as
television helicopters filmed the
ltf termath of the drama A dark
bundle, possibly a backpack, !'at
next to the dead body.
What drove Generakos to arm
himseU and threaten district offi-
cials remdins a mystery, but there
are signs tpat he was diSpleased
with the hdndling of his 16-yed.r-
old son's education. His son
attends a special education pro-
gram at University I hgh School in
Irvine.

Generakos, who 1s scheduled
to teach a· chemistry class at
Coasllirie Corn.muruty College m
Fountain Valley this spnng,
reportedly abandoned a high-
paying Job with a pharmaceutical
company to be closer to his chil-
dren.
A comb1~allon of dec1S)Ons
may have prompted Generakos to
bring a handgun to the co~ty
superintendent's office and hold
an employee hostage.
Generakos reportedly lO!).t full
custody of tus daughter ana 16-
year-old son to his former Wlfc in
lum. •
"I. think the dad didn't think
the son should be aware of these
new services," he said. "The
mother thought the earlier to
address the situation the better."
District officials said Gener-
akos bad regularly attended
board meetings for the last year
and left voice· mail messages for
county education officials con-
cerning his son. Officials said
although Generakos never made
any direct threats, they hired tt
security guard to morutor board
meetings that Generakos attend-
ed.
Police say Generakos walked
irlto the district headquarters
shortly after 2 p.m. Monday and
went up a staircase to offices
occupied by top adnunistrators.
Generakos reportedly had a con-
versation with Deputy Superin-
October.
"He was very depressed
because be had lost his lods," said
Generakos' father, Peter Gener-
akos, who lives in Lakewood. "Ha
was a very good person. He took
care or tus kids for seven yedrs.
He loved his kids.
The son who is heanng-

stone in Generakos' We. Dtstnct
officials say that when the mother,
who works as a counselor lor deaf
kids at a regional center, made
decisions for their children's edu-
c:ation, Generakos became
incensed.
• "J talked to him a lot, but he
didn't pamcf;;ate m the meetingc;

Belkin, the district's duector of
spec;ial educatipn. "He got upset

Marsh, a sophomore as well,
is a product of Estancia High.
The only disappointment
Peters had this season was not
being able to beat Cypress and
losing in the first round of the
Southern California Regionals.
"Our goal was to win a
conference title ahd we came up
short,• Peters said. "We were
disappomted because of the
rivalry between the two schools.

game against them. We fought

Bond believes that Peters will
make a fine addition to whatever
university team she chooses to
play for and knows that it will be
hard to replace the centerpiece
of Orange Coast's defense.
But another Estancia product,
Jennifer Porter, may be the
answer. "She played some center

coming back from knee surgery,"
Bond said. "I know that if she's
healthy, I can put her bdck there
