Tuesday night. The Sailors, going for therr third state title this decade (and second in D1vtsion I), also served well, misfiring only once in the first two games, before committing six 6Crvtcc errors in a reckless third game. ·"(The Sailors) realized they could go to their middle -they figured they didn't have to go outside to the wing," Elder said, assessing the damage the Tars created after rus team (29-2) led early in the match. ·This is definitely the best team we've played. The only other team I've seen so far . that can match up with them m the middle is Centennial, but it has only one big ·middle. That (SailoE) team is too good. They run the middle as well as anyone I've seen in the two years I've been coaching.• April Ross, Newport's 6-1 juruor, led the squad with 15 kills, six in the second game. She also added two digs. Carey finished with three kills, five digs, three .blocks and 33 assists, while Dill and Lavold each had eight kills and teammate Brenda Waterman chipped in with three. "Enca Wade did a nice job serving and. playing m the back row," said Glenn, who added that Dill and Carey were also superb, Ross produced three kills early in New- port's first-game comeback, including one to tie it, 6-6. Dill's solo block on Bullard's Jill Franz gave Newport a 7-6 lead. Franz, a 6-1 senior middle blocker and the most v.eteran of Knigh~ players, is headed for' Texas Chris- tian next year. Newport continued its first-game surge on a net vtolabon by Bullard and a kill by Waterman, then Lavold took over at the net with four kills and a scoring block on Bullard's Megan Johnston Kills by Ross gave the Tars leads of 12-6 and 13-6, the latter of which ended a long rally with both teams making dramatic saves. What followed was a service ace by Wade and an unforced error on Bullard 's side to provide the margin of victory. Carey had two aces, a service winner and three cligs in the second game as the Tars raced to a 9-0 lead and were never threat- ened. On one Newport point, La.vold had a block and Waterman and Kieran Collins each made digs to keep a rally alive, giving the Tars d 10-2 lead. In the tlurd game, one of Bullard's side- oulli came on a kill by Jessica Kinder. whose spike barely grazed Ross'. ponytail. Carey had two blocks in the game, while Lavold added another as Newport Harbor jumped out to a 9-1 lead. The Tars scored the match's last three points with Ross behind the" service line. ~oss had an ace, Dill fired in a kill and Watennan ended it with a kill off the block. HOOPS •The senior· All-American doesn't miss a shot in sec women's 86-50 conquest. JA..'><>:O. I hu. llcit"" COSTA MESA -Before Tues- day's game against Christian Hentage College, Southern Cali- fonua College Coach Russ Davis had a meeting with senior All- Amencan Amee Pina. Both felt because of the award, whlch she received as a junior, that Pina was pressing to live up to that stan- dard as the Vanguards chase a shot at a national title. Davis told her to go out against the Hawks and have fun. Pina buried all six of her three- point attempts and two tree throws as sec dropped VlSiting Chrisban Hentage, 86-50, in a nonconlerence women's basket- ball game. ' The Vanguards (4-'2) have won four in d row after· dropping the first two games to NCAA Division II schools. "I sWI wasn't confident wtth my shot during pregame warmups," Pind said. "But I got a lot or support f.rom my team- mates and I think I've got my confidence back now." PUla, who firushed with 20 points dJld nine assists, has an important role in the Van- g u a r d s · Amee Pina offense. . Pma plays a ma1ority of the game as the pomt guard as the offense works the ball into the paint where 6- foot-4 senior Sara Herkenhoff and Kelly Boeke are waiting. Herkenhoff (10 of 13 from the floor) was the leading scorer for the Vanguards with 22 points. Boeke, who 15 6~foot-2 and only a freshman, was 6 for 6 for 12 pomts. With that kind of accuracy mside, an opposing defense has to stay closer to the basket. That's wh~e Pina and senior Kristi Wright step in and drop bombs from the three-pomt line, keeping the defense honest. "Her (Pina's) performance doesn't surprise me," Davis said. "She has all the skills. l saw her at dJl instrucbonal camp where she went around the hoJn and made 26 consecuuve three-point- ers in front of t 00 kids.• Wright converted 3 of 5 lhree- point attempts for nine points: Despite the easy win, Davis notlced some defensive problems that be didn't like when Christian Hentage would inbotmd the ball under the basket.
