Dipping into the mail bag for a morale boost
Reprtnbg ....... ~ n.s-·

columning trade.
We do it when we (a) have
nothing to say (although some
readers will insist that is all of the
time), (b) have so much to say we
don't know where to begin, or (c)
have become overwhelmingly
embroiled in extracurricular mat-

My cop-out this week is (c),

I am trying to keep up with all

Indeed, I warn you now, Sat-

entirely to the thoughts that rat-

'E very person here tonight bas a personal

Jacobson of Newport Beach.
Jacobson, looking quite chic in a
dinner suit of creme-colored

..400 other dedicated locals on the
tennis court at the home of hosts
Renee and Stanley Seber for the
3rd Annual Canvas of Hope din-

The sold-out evening, orga-
nized by ~e Orange County
Chapter Of the National Parkin-

funds for national research and
for local patient services and out-
reach at Hoag Hospital.
•When we offered our home
for this event tonight we told the

modate around 300 people,• said
hostess Renee· Scher, addressing
the crowd from a stage erected
on he r tennis court, which.w.as-

coming in and we didn't want to

raven-haired Renee, wearing a
shimmering black cocktail suit.
Everyone in attendance
understood her sentiments. Many
had come because they shared
the pain o! losing a loved one to
Parkinson's. Others were moni-

Three years ago, a strange-

dopamine, a neurotransmitter to
the human brain, began to mal-

The depletion of dopamine cre-

mystery, the cure is illusive.
Warsaw, at 45, is fit, hand-
some and successful. Married to
Ellyne and the father of young
children, Bryan, Zakary and
Kyle, Warsaw found his life
turned upside down.
They closed ranks with sup-
port from brother Robert Warsaw
and his wife Carol, parents and
close friends. Three years later
the success of the 3rd Annual
Canvas of Hope dinner was
largely a testament to the com-
munity of love, support and hope
for James Warsaw and his family.

Designer pizza at its best at Newport .Beach's ·Pizza ·Bakery

Sure, we have the regular

an old favorite just enough to
add some California flair.
Call it designer pizza, and

And while the seven-year-old,
family-owned business offers a
selection of other Italian foods
such as lasagna, spaghetti and
meatball sandwiches, it is best
know for, of course, its pizza.
Dwing a recent lunchtime vis-
it with my newsroom colleagues,
the Pizza Bakery cooks were
busy preparing pizzas for a

While the restaurant always
offers its pizzas by the slice with
a variety of traditional and
gourmet toppings, it also boasts
an extensive menu of lunch spe-
cials served until 2 p.m.
The most popular special, with
most patrons as well as my small
group, is the No. 2, offering an
enormous slice of cheese pizza
with one topping, a lunch salad
and drink ($.5.50). 1\vo slices
probably equals one small pizza.
MIGUEL VASCONCEllO'> I DAILY PILOT
Pizza Bakery Manager John Craft proudly displays a New York-style jumbo slice of pizza
The topping menu includes
just about-a:nyth:ing-you could
think of from mushrooms and
pepperoni to pesto sauce and
feta cheese.
My city editor dove into her
large side salad, a meal in itself,
and gathered some of her
favorite snacks -the free, sea-
soned dough knots next to the
cash register -while our pizzas
baked in the hot oven.
"These are so delicious,• she
told our new out-of-state
reporters out to try California piz-
za for the first time. A plate of
the warm, twisted bits of
oregano-seasoned dough was
devoured in minutes.
The salads were anything but
the usual mounds of lonely ice-
berg lettuce served as sides in
many restaurants. The Pizza
Bakery's side salads included
fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella
and cheddar cheese, peppers,
kidney beans, garbanzo beans
and other tidbits usually reserved
for fancy salad bars.
Pizza is usually served within
about five minutes -as it was in
two other of my dining trips

there -but during this visit. I
forced my comrades to wait 15
minutes for my special No. 7 -
the lunch-size calzone ($4.50).
It didn't disappoint
When the calzone's hard outer
shell, which reminded me of a
large crab, was puncturPd, a hot
mix of ricotta cheese. spinach
and tomatoes spilled out onto my

sausage to the mix, which was
mild, but flavorful.
Now, I'm no fan of tomatoes.
Or spinach. really. But the cal-
zone mix blended the flavors so
well that I didn't notice.

My mother would be so
proud. And the calzone itself was
so large, I only made a dent in
the side. I'd love to see the din-

The pizzas were just as good.
My editor devoured her slice
with grilled eggplant, as did the
other reporters. The cooks spread
an even coat of the homemade
sauce on the thin, but not brittle,
crust. And they don't skimp on
the toppings.

I think the fire chief bas pre-
sented a very good proposal that
makes teme to me; that firemen
stand by at the games as their
call load allows and provide that
service that is already paid for
by taxpayers.
I don't see us having to spend
$9,000 to duplicate what we
would be doing onyway by dis-
patching a paramedic unit there.
In that respect, I would like to

Ju.st the fact that there is
need for either EMT's or an
ambulance shows that high
school football is a violent sport
where children can get hurt,
sometimes permanently or killed
in rare occasion.
School officials, being adults,
should not allow activities that ·
are potentially hazardous to .
kids. I think schools spend too
much money and time with
extracurricular activities such as
football. And they spend way
too much money with drug test-
ing and having to need ambu-
lances at these type of events.

An idea that could take
your breath away
• EDITOR'S NOTE: Readers react to question whether school
officials should test students for alcohol by testing their breath.
I think it is an absolute shame that our soaety is so
tenified of drugs and alcohol that they are taking
away, little by little, all of our rights ~ citizens.
It is always the minority that is involved in these
kind of problems and creates problems, not the majori-
ty. The majority should not have to suffer and be
assumed guilty because of a minority's abuses and
uses .
It is not up to our government to decide who go
goes to jail based on a moral issue. The problems with
drugs and alcohol are health-related problems that are
stemmed from different ways.
UnW we finally realize that these are not mminal
acts that people do, perllaps because of the drug and
alcohol. it may lead to aiminal acts, but putting them
in jail or a.nesting them or penalizing people because
of their abuses of drug and alcohol will never solve the
problem. We should read our history.
'lake a look at when alcohol was illegal in the '20's.
What happened then with the mobsters and gangs is
no different than What is happening now.
LYNDA NOSANOV
Corona del Mar
Yes I agree with you. Local high schools should start
using the Breathalyzers at events because many young
guys have the tendency of using alcohol during the
events to feel more brave some people say more hap-~
py.
· All these young people want is to feel the impor-~
tance of the emotional feeling by using alcohol. And
this is the finrt steps of violence. U you use the breatha-
lyzers in high schools they will help to have a safe and
enjoyable event in the high schools.
I think this is a good idea.
RUEBAN MENDOZA
Santa Ana
Leave breathalyzing to the police.
Enable school officials, teachers, to exclude students
from events for perceived inappropriate behavior. Let
the zero tolerance policy apply to students caught
drinking. Let's stop the witch hunt mentality.
ROBERT LEITH
Ne\fi)Ort Beach
Being two former Newport. Harbor High School Stu-
dents we believe the money spent on the breatbalyzer
equipment should be appropriated to more vital
scholastic material.
We have personally witnessed the lack of up-to-
date books and overaowded cla.ssrooms. We feel the
mon would be much better ton a new set of
ora new er.
It would be a oomplete waste of time and would
probably mean that more security would be necessary
to properly enforoe such a proposal.
We are very certain that U a poll was taken by the
stbdenb, there would be an overwbelming response
againlt the pOposa1.
U tbil propoeal does go through we would like-to

Opening lead: Three of Q
help declarer and the defenders
play a hand according to the proba-
bilities. These are right most ol the
tjme, but they are pneralities and
do not fit specific cases. As an
example, how would you defend
four spades _af\er partner leads a
heart?
Note North's bid o( three spa.dee.
Although holding a balanced hand,
North had ample to aoc:ept tbe lnvi·
tat.ion and showed three-card 1up·
port to offer partner a choice of eon·
tr.ts .. Since...,.. bicb misht be
alow in dneloping, South choee the
.Wt plQe rat.her than no trump.
WeetJed a heart, taken in dum·
my IO that declarer could lead a
trump toward the closed hand.
"'8ecood hand law: soee the saw. eo
F.a.t followed with the two and the
aeven forced We1t'1 ace. Declarer
wu now in control No return could
berm the contract. '11\e heart con·
tinuation W'9 taken in hand and a trump was conceded to the king.
In the intenlate of safety, declarM
roee with t.he ace on the dJamond
switch, drew the laat trump and
conceded a diamond trick. The
defender1 ac:ored only two trump
. trick.a and a diamond.
Obeerve what would happen if
Eut roee with the king of trumps
on the nnt 1pade lead, a play that
had little to loee. When it holds, • diamond 1witch kills declarer's
, chances. Whether South takes the
ine111e or rises w1 e ace, t .e
defenders can negotiate a diamond
ruJT for down one. Try it!
