everylhmg discussed in closed
session was not to be shared,
they deferred questions to the
mayor.
That strategy may have
worked, but the problem was
that the four council members
who wanted Murphy gone
refused to say anything at all
after the resignation. They
should have, known that a "no
comment" coming from an out-
spoken guy like Hedges would
send any reporter off to find the
real story. Had they each just
said, "We had some philosophi-
cal differences, but I wish Kevin
Murphy the best in his new
endeavors," this story probably
would have died after the first
week
In the end, Murphy may walk
away the least bruised of all. He
1S working as a.consultant for a
local company and reportedly
has several other job offers in the
public sector.
I certainly hope the new coun-
cil will be able to pick up and
move on. U nothing else, they
could strive to find a. lesson in all
of this -such as it's better to be
diligent, open· and honest -and
apply it to their relationship with
Murphy's successor.
