One measure of Harling's artistry ls
his ability to make every song sound

reading it one night while helping clean

Before his first record deal was
signed, Harling, o native of Greenwood,

His hrst moment in the spotlight came
when he was playing bass m a club

"We were playing a lot of rock 'n'
roll, but I said I knew a few country
songs,• said the self-taught musician,
who as a fourth-grader built what he
calls "a drum set of many colors, like
Dolly Parton's coat."
Harling assembled. a country band
soon after that, and started playing cov-
er versions of contemporary country
hits. He said he threw in a few original
songs now and then.
Harling began opening for a variety

But one of the problems with
the existing setup, Morgan said,

"This is an issue the City

said. "From our standpoint, if we
were to have a foundation or

"" Besides tremendous cost,
some of the issues involved m
building d new animal shel!er

insurance and how it will be

Morgan's group is proposing
to staff the facility primarily with
volunteers, comparable to how
the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter

he would like to continue work-

CORONA DEL MAR -It was 73 minute!>
into the nonledgue girls soccer gdmc with
Estanoa High when Corona del Mar Codch
Walid Khoury gave the mstrucltons to kill
time, because he didn't want any more
goals, I
· But less than a minute later, freshman
Allison Harvey, who was outside earshot of
her coach's directive, headed m a comer
kick from Sea Kmg teammc1te Allison
Browner to make lt 7 ·O.
It was that kind ol dc1y for thf~ hosts. who
extended their season-openmg shutout
streak to three games and lnpled their team
sconng average, followmg a pair of 1-0 tri-
umphs over highly rcgdrded Umversity and
LaQW1a Hills. .
Hln terms of detenmnation and team uni-

this year,· said Khoury, who Iii.ls 11 under-
classmen on his 17-player roster. "But we're
still young. and expenence is o;omething
which only comes with time."
It took little time for CdM to hnd the net
against the Eagles (l· 1 ), as Htirvey angled a
shot off the goalkeeper into the nedf comer
in the 12th minute. Harvey followed her hrst
vdrsity goal with an arcing shot 1ust under
the crossbar 10 minutes lat~r ttnd earned the
hat trick on the aforementioned score w1th
JUSt seven minutes left.
Senior Meghan Bryan tallied the lust of
her two goals on an assist by sophomore
Kate Sunon m the 34th minute and the hosts
settled for a 3-0 half tune lead.
But the Sea Kmgs, who beat Estancia Ja~t
year, 5-0, for their season-high scoring out
put, needed 1ust 12 minutes to double the11
lead once play resumed.
A Bryan throw-m directly onto the riqhl
foot of sophomore Molly O'Mettra, who
directed it mto the net, opened the second·
hall onslaught in the 48th minute.
Jacqueline Betker scored after tt scram-
ble in front two nunutes later and Bryan
found a sizable gap m the defense, as well
as the back of the net, to up the lead to 6-0
two nunutes after that.
Estanaa goalie Helen Flores made rune
saves before e'°bng with a brwsed knee
sustained in a collision with a CdM attacker,
But her counterport, CdM sophomore keep-
~r Britt~ Vogele, was virtually unchallenged
m posting yet another goose egg.
Estancia did not put a shot on goal and it's
lone scoring opporturuty cd.ffic when tresh-
man Artis Reynolds boomed a direct kick
high over the crossbar. from about 20 ydrds
out midway through the second half.
Khoury credited the continued defensive
excellence of back-liners O'Medra, Jess1ct1
Luchesi, Ju1td Llvmgston dnd Nattilw Dorf
