the idea of a three-story
hotel on the bayside site.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The
local family that developed the
mid-priced Countryside Inn
chain is looking to build a 150-
unit hotel on the landmark
Lower Castaways site.
The Ayres family, whose
eight hotels include one on
Bristol Street in Costa Mesa,
hasn't even negotiated lQ buy
the vacant bayside land at
Dover Drive and Coast High-
way from The Irvine Co.
First, the hotel owners want
to ensure they can overcome
hurdles at the city.
The Planning Commission
at its last meeting voted to let
the Ayres family pursue the
approval process. And the City
Council will tackle the issue at
its Nov. 12 meeting.
The city must OK several
steps in the project, including
changing the type of business
for which the site can be used.
The land js designated for a
commercial marina that The
Irvine Co. proposed three
years ago but decided would-
n't be profitable, Irvine Co.
spokesperson Larry Thomas
U Ayres family members get
the approvals they need, they
plan to negotiate to buy the
land from The Irvine Co.
Don Ayres III, who helps
run the family business with
bis father and brother,
described the proposed hotel
as a three-story, 150-unit
building with a #European
feel.• Countryside Inn rooms
ran e in rice from $70 to $90,
he said.
Ayres said his family has
been eyeing the land for about
five months. The family has
owned and run hotels for 11
· addin two more
hotels to the eight already in
Southern California.
Though the Ayreses are
longtime Newport Beach resi-
dents, no locations in their
hometown piqued their busi-
ness interests before they set
sights on Lower Castaways.

It seems that the Israelis have
become accustomed to constant
tension and the probability of
war. Consequently, they refuse to
hve in fear; everyone rides the
buses and carries on with their
individual lives as usuaJ.
There are, however, remark-
able security measures to remind
one that nowhere is completely
sale, and no one, not even
Israelis and Americans, are com-
pletely trusted. Before even step-

searched. Once in a while it
strikes me they're searching for a
bomb, and I recall the multi~e
incidehts of the past few years
which have led to such stringent
measures.
Everywhere I go, .J encounter
men and women in uniform, car-
rying guns as if they were mere-

guns create an equilibrium that
deter petty crimes, they actually
serve as a safety precaution in
Israel. Althou_gb this may work
well in this sinall country where
every man and woman is

wrote a column based
on a dinner conversation
with a retired executive of an
international corporation -and
a lifelong Republican.
He was deeply troubled
about the upcoming eledlon
and said unless there was
strong evidence the Republi-

the bard-line right wing of their
party, he would vote Democrat-
ic for the first time in a national
election.
When I asked him to identify

I suggested party policy

by polls showing Dole and
Clinton almost dead even in -

OK, now let's fast-forward to
Anaheim last week, where a
group of almost two dozen
highly visible Republicans -
including a member of the
Orange County Central Com-
mittee, two mayors, a city coun-
cil member and a former county
supervisor -held a press con-
ference. Their purpose: to
declare their support for Bill
Clinton's reelection. The rea-
sons most often mentioned:
Dole's stand on abortion, the
environment and gun control.
Their consensus: alienation
from the GOP leadership
because it advocates extreme
positions they can't embrace.
The mayor of Tustin, lfacy
Wills Worley, said: #The Repub-

So what did the Republican
thinkers do? They moved even
further to the right, leaving
voids in the renter-right that
Bill Clinton moved ·into grate-

in a few weeks.
If you have any doubt about
why this is happening, consider
the statesmanlike response of
Orange County GOP cbainnan
Tom Fuentes to the press con-

Fuentes compared members
of the group to the French
politicians who collaborated
with the Nazis and set up a
puppetgovermnentduring
World War II. He then mixed a
metaphor by telling a Tunes
reporter: ·This is a very small
cadre of Vichy Republicans
who all received their 30 pieces

With leadership like this, the
Republicans may never get

• Odds are strong that
neither Costa Mesa nor

is a bigger quest Friday.

Estancia High senior Chris
Mokede hopes to murder his
former team, Costa Mesa, when . .

-1 think (Mokede) may help
me get the kids back up for

sinister giggle.
Mokede, who transferred to
Estancia after clashing with
. Costa Mesa Coach Jerry Howell,
would like nothing better than
pushing the Mustangs out of
contention for a berth in the CIF
Playoffs.
Mokede was Mesa's starting
quarterback in last year's 42-18
Estancia win. He threw for 184
yards and one touchdown, but
will have a somewhat different
role this time around.
He will start at free safety and
see spot duty at wingback, tight
end and quarterback (should the
need arise for a two-minute
offense). He will also lend bis
powerful left leg to the Estanda
cause as the Eagles'
place-kicker.
Mokede said two weeks ago
gaining a playoff berth revolved
around beating Mesa. But there's
more than a spot in the
postseason at stake for the
multi-talented performer.
0
While Estancia focused lts
attention from the first day of
football practice on beating
Laguna Hills, Howell's Mustangs
directed their preseason sights
on the cross-town Eagles.
"We want The Bell back,•
Howell said in bis first preseason
conversation with the Daily Pilot,

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBA~L

edg~ at the midway_point
• Sailors get off the floor to post 15-8, 12-15, 9-15, 15-12,
15-7 victory over Santa Margarita to grab league lead.
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA -Newport Harbor High's girls vol-
leyball team was staring at a 2-1 deficit in games and a 12-9 count in
the fourth set Tuesday night in a Sea View League duel of unbeatens
at Santa Margarita.
But, as their coach, Dan Glenn, would relate, they •battled bade-an
inch at a time to record a bard-fought 15-12 victory, then closed it out
with a 15-7 triwnph to put the hosts away in five.
The victory gives Harbor a 5-0 record in League play (6-3 overall) at
the midway point; Santa Margarite falls to 4-1, 7-3.
·niey just dug everything, -said Glenn of Santa Margarita follow-
ing the upbill 15-8, 12-15, 9-15, 15-12, 15-7 verdict.
1n the final set Newport Harbor's imposing height made a notice-
able difference at the net, and just in time.
Honors were spread out following the marathon struggle, with
senior Joanna Fielder recording 13 kills and 5 stuff blocks; junior Beth
Waterman nailing 21 kills, 3 blocks and 10 digs; junior Melissa Snow
coming up with 19 kills, 7 digs and 3 service aces; and sophomore set-
ter Jennifer Carey contributing 10 kills, 2 blocks, 7 digs and 65 assists.
Elsewhere in high school girls volleyball Tuesday:
• CORONA DEL MAR -Visiting Irvine High swept the Corona del
Mar girls volleyball team, 15-9, 15-6, 15·9, Tuesday to drop the Sea
Kings to 3-10, 1-4 in the Sea View. The Vaqueros improved to 7-4, 3-2.
• LAGUNA BEACH -The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team
hasn't backed away from anybody this season as their No. 8 ranking in
CIF Division ill-A attests.
The Mustangs are, nevertheless, winless in 11 attempts (0-5 in
Pacific Coast League play) following Tuesday's loss to the No. 3 team
in Orange County, Laguna Beach, 15-1, 15-3, 15-1.
Evelyn Powers had two stuff blocks and Kristina Watanabe added
two kills for the Mustangs, but it wasn't enough to keep Laguna Beech
from improving to 11-1 overall, 5·0 in the PCL.
