Motivational
speaker Tom Ba~
of Corona del
Mar talks about
reducing stress
during the
holidays.
KIM HAGGtRTY·ZVUUS I OAlY PllOT
Get the holidcly tiger by· 'the -tail
Motivational speaker says this is
the prime season for stress -
but there are ways to combat it
j8'1fTR Rr>.GLA~O
T om Bay says the average person
fights 50 to 60 tigers on a daily
basis. During the holiday season,
Uldt number can almost double.
As an inspirational speaker and
author, it is his job to help people deal
with the stress that mevitably comes from
all of those battles. The Corona del Mai
resident speaks regularly to large corpo·
rations, hospitals and high schools.
"Stress is powerful, and you can us<> it
m a powerful way or µse 1t t9 be destmc-
tive," Bay said.
According to the "tiger" theory, the
human body was designed lo react when
faced with a stressful situation, such ac; a
tiger that's about to attack.
Bay said the boUy m such a situation
automatically releases 1,200 different
chenucals that aid a person to do somP-
lhing physical -either hght the tiger or •
run away. ·
The effects of fight or llighl are ii fa~t~r
heart rate, thicker hlood for easier dot·
ting of wounds, acid to quickly digest ariy
food m the stomach that may otherwise
slow d person down The unmune c;yslt"m
also shuts down in order to save energy.
The problem is, unlike ettrlier umc.c;
when the tiger wt1s \lctually Cl big. scary
animal that a person would have to phy.s-
1cally tight or run away from, nowadays
they come in many diJtc:rcnt fonns. Ba}

As people fight these emotional t1qers
all da~ long but never do anyth.ing phr.;-
ic-al, the end
said. ·After fighting 50 to 60 tigers a day,
when we come home the last thmq we
want to do 1s put on a pair of shorts arut
go exercise.·
The . worst consequence is h ealth
problems, Bay said If the immune systl·m
is forced to turn off too much, people an>
much more vulnerable to catching cold
and the flu.
And he c;aid the cumulative effect of
never· flushing out the .fight or flight
chemicals is long-term problems th t
require medication for reducing stoma< h
and, thinning blood and stabilizing the
heiirt beat.
He said people have problems coping
Wlth stress during the holidays and all
year long because they don't take the
time to recognize what's truly important
Failure to do that launches a vicious cyd<•
m which people think. they have to rio
everything. even if it's not possible. ·
·we get ourselves so caught up 111
stuff and we don't recogruze the value of
things until there is a <1isis or traumd,
Bay saic.l .
Thul holds especially true during thr•
holiday season. when more and morr
things are 1am-packed into peoplt•
