Intermediate School's new princi-
pal has a familiar face.
Interim <principal Allan
Mucerino was selected unani-
mously Tuesday by school board
members to fill the post vacated
by --popular principal Scott
Paulsen two months ago.
Superintendent Mac Bernd
said Mucerino, who came to
Ensign as assistant principal in
1995, slipped into the principal's
chair easily and was a natural
choice.
•He's done a wonderful job in
that capacity,• Bernd said,
announcing his recommendation.
•He has certainly garnered the
support of the faculty and parents
in that capacity."
Accepting the appointment,
Mucerino said while the past few
weeks have been a whirlwind of

He also was selected assistant

When Paulsen unexpectedly
announced bis retirement in
August, Mucerino slid into the

• The flood of fake mail
aimed to stop a project to
place utilities underground
is uncovered by Newport
Beach officials.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -A last-
minute deluge of protest letters
almost short-circuited a proposal
to put Balboa Boulevard utility
poles underground. Then city
officials discovered many of the
letters were frauds.
The City Council Monday
held its final public hearing on
the proposal, which splits the $1.4
million cost among the are~'s
property owners. The council
would abandon the idea if more
than 50% of the property owners
protested by letter.
Late Monday afternoon, about
72 protest letters showed up at
City Hall. Public Work.i Director
Don Webb said.
Before that influx, city officials
had counted 29 protests, which
would be only 18% of the district.
The grand total of 101 protests
would represent 53% of the dJs-
trict -and would mean death for
the hard-fought proposal.
As panicky staff members
perused the letters, they noticed
one was signed by someone who
bad faxed in a letter of support.
They called the man, and he said
be bad written the support letter,
not the protest.
A few more phone calls invah-
dated a few more protest letters.
Webb said. City staff membe~
eventually got in touch with 15
supposed protesters, all of whom
denied writing protest letters.
Discounting those 15 letters
brought the protest down to 46%,
Webb said.
The council then voted to form
the assessment district along Bal-
boa Boulevard betw~ A and l-.

Smart ways to stay

The Mermaid restaurant is under scruttny by tbe Newport Beach City Coundl for vlolattng nude ord..lnances, but owners An
and Olivia Nguyen continue to fight to stay open.
NEWPORT BEACH-Council
members Monday shot down a
proposal to. determine the mayor
by a rotation system rather than
by a council vote.
• Look both ways before
crossing the street.
• Cross the street only at cor-
ners.
• Don't hide or cross the street
between parked cars.
NUDE CLUB PLANS TO DEFY CITY
Councilwoman Nonna Glover
presented a plan to her six col-
leagues to set up a system in
which council members would
take turns at one-year mayoral
terms. Currently, voters choose
the council members, then coun-
cil members vote to choose a
mayor.
• Wear light-colored or reflec-
tive-type clothing so you are
more visible.
• Plan your route and share it
with your family. If possible,
have an adult go with you. • Attorney for The Mermaid intends to go back to

NEWPORT BEACH -City
officials say they're finally going
to shut down Newport Beach's
only nude restaurant -but the
owners' lawyer says his clients
won't go without a fight.
And so the more than two-
year battle over The Mermaid
continues.
The City Council Monday
adopted an arbitration judge's
decision supporting the city's
right to block the club's permits.
City officials revoked the The
Mermaid's entertainment per-
mit a few months ago and
refused to renew its adult busi-
ness permit. They cited city
code and permit violations at
the club at 4248 Martingale
Way.
Officials said dancers got too
close to patrons and touched
patrons and other dancers. They
also charged club owners An
and Olivia Nguyen with not
providing the required restroom
attendant.
The Nguyens' lawyer, Ron
Talmo, appealed the officials'
action to the City Council,
which sided with the officials.
Talmo then appealed to an arbi-
tration judge, who ruled in the
city's favor.
· The city today will inform the
Nguyens they must close The
· Mermaid's doors, ~t City
Attorney Robin Clauson said.
'"We'll be forced to take them
to court if they don't comply, ..
City Manager Kevin M~hy
said.
Talmo's response: See you in
court.
'"They lack the physical abil-
ity to shut us down,• Talmo said.

•They'll need to go to court."
First, Talmo said, be will file a
state court cbaUenge to the city's
decision to block the permits.
Then he will file a federal
civil rights suit. He said the city
is violating the da.Qcers' right of
free expression and the club
owners' right of equal protec-
tion of the laws -the two argu-
ments be used in the arbitration
hearing.
Meanwhile, Talmo said, the
Nguyens continue planning a
second Mermaid in Newport
Beach. The idea remains in its
formative stages, he said.
'"It depends a lot on bow this
current battle turns out with the
city,• he said.
Glover said she wanted to
"take the politics out of being

•My attempt at introducing

Council members said they'd

But the Bishop family's bless-

also initially struggled to make it in
entertainment, eventually gradu-
ating from modest nightclub com-
ic to popular TV personality, film
actor and member of Prank Sina-
tra's inner circle.
In the early 1960s, the elder
Bishop's burgeoning career in situ-
ation comedy led the family to
relocate from New Jersey to Bev-
erly Hills, where Larry made some
friends with familiar names who
were to figure largely in his life:
Richard "Ricley" Dreyfuss, Rob
Reiner and Albert Brooks.
The drama-minded foursome
appeared in many Beverly Hills
High School productions together
-Larry even remembers once
using an acting bit he'd stolen
from Dreyfuss to win .a lead role
over his friend -and made a vow
to support each other in their quest
for show-business careers.
1966, he teamed with Reiner as a
comedy act. Although Larry was
the first to sign a film contract -lat -
er appearing in the 1968 cult hit
"Wild in the Streets," "The Sting
0" and guest starring on such TV
shows as "I Dream of Jeannie" -
his buddies moved up the Holly-
wood ladder faster. But in an un-
HoUywood fashion, actor Dreyfuss,
actor/director Reiner and
actor/director/screenwriter Brooks
didn't forget about their old friend

Larry, meanwhile, had turned
to screenwrlting. In 1987, be

his dream of directing and co-st.ar-

eflce from Hollywood executives
or "script doctors• remained
unfulfilled.
That is, until bis old buddy
Dreyfuss came into the picture.
After reading the script, the actor
committed to play the lead role of
the unstable mob boss, Vic, and
was so enthusiastic he enlisted his
production company to round up
the film's shoestring $5.7 million
budget. Actors Goldblum, Bryne
and Sarkin soon came into the pic-

The plucky Bishop got
Reynolds and Pryor involved by

"When I went around with

As excited as he is that "Mad

said he doesn't put too much

success. After all, he has spent
years watching his dad deal with
Hollywood's inevitable ups and
downs.
But Papa Bishop isn't worried
about his son's future. He remem-

Costa Mesa's Taleen Selkeldjian digs one out Tuesday as the winning Eagles had the Mustangs scrambling.
Sooner or later someone is going to figure out
there's something upside down about the CIF
rankings following Estancia's second str-aight
sweep of winless, and 10th-ranked, Mustangs.
By Barry Faulkner, Datly Pilot
COSTA MESA -The Estancia High girls volleyball
team stayed out of its coach's doghouse Tuesday night,
and it just may have flown into the CIF Southern Section
Division ill-A rankings in the process.
Coach Dale Hall's Eagles (5-4, 2-4 in the Pacific Coast
League) swept cross-town visitor Costa Mesa (0-13, 0-6),
ranked No. 10 in Division ill-A. for the second time this
season, 15-11. 15-13, 15-8.
·we played well,• said Hall, who was frustrated by a
somewhat less-impressive performance last week (league
losses to University and Laguna Hills).
·we had a bad time last week, but tonight we lit up.
We played aggressively, served well, and blocked as well
as we have this year. We played like a team.·
The victory would figure to impress Southern Section
coaches, who have for the last five weeks continued to
vote Mesa into the cliVlSion's top 10, despite its season-
long winless skein.
Costa Mesa Coach Dave Sorrells
said bis team hit as well as 1t has
this season, but continued to strug-
gle in the passing department.
Estancia, in fact, collected 12
aces to Mesa's seven, as all six
Eagle •starters found holes in the

Senior Jill Black led the serving
