FIVE EASY QUESTIONS
Bill
Pierpoint
Wrth the Newport Harbor
Christmas Boat Parade set to
sail Thursday, we thought
we'd ask Bill Pierpoint. who is
chairman of the Boat Para~e
Committee, a few burning
questions.
Since you're the chairman of
the committee, does that
mean you get to ride on the
best yacht7
We beg, steal, borrow and
get on our knees to get on the
lead boat, and the lead boat lS
nonnally considered the best
boat.
Is there food onboard? "
My wife definitely hopes
there'll be some hors
d'oeurvres. It's always a
pleasant surprise. And it's
Christmas, it's time to put on
weight.
Which would you rather eat
onboard: meatballs, raw veg-
gies or finger sandwiches?
We'd like to have Clayton
Shurley's barbecue nbs. Clay-
ton's from Texas, and he's got
the best bdrbecue ribs you
ever tasted. He's got barbe-
cue ribs up to his armpits.
Can a boat have too many
lights7
As long as the number of
lights on the boat doesn't
exceed the number of lights
on the Empire State Bwldmg.
That's the gwdeline.
Has anyone ever gone off
course during the parade?
Only those who have had a
little bit too much chardon-
nay.

Creating the perfect school district is a group effort
!:attended the first meeting of
the District Strdteg1c Commit·
tee witn grt-at hope. Tho com-
rruttee is made up of stellcu mem-
bers of the conununity dS well as
some of the district's top educa-
tors and administrators. r have
.. -been on a lot of school and dis-
trict committees previously, so I
was somewhat worried that this was yet another corrunittee that
will form a nice report to be put
on a shelf.
This meeting stdrted out a lot
like the community meeting that was held when Mac Bernd first
t~ over as superintendent. If
Y•U will recall, a steering com-
nii,!tee had come up with a list o(
possible community gools that
the larger community meeting
was asked to discuss and prion-
tize. As expected, thoc;e goals ·
that encompassed the more glob-
al issues were the ones at the top
o( edch table group's list. As I
recall, those goals were that all
children in the district would be
learning at or above grade level.
In addition, the schools would
meet all of the needs that schools
are supposed to meet. Each table
group used a big piece of pa~r
and wrote their answers on the
paper for all to see. We were
filled with excitemt>nt in this new
era of partidpation.
The next educationally related
committee I sat on was a school-
based site whme our school was
selected to partake in a school
plan as part of a group at the
Orange C'ounty Department of
Education We spent months
learning why we wanted to
reach a tonsensus and how to act
as facilitator;. Then we spent

·more months coming up with a
vision statement using a fish's
skeleton as ow pattern.
In March 1997, I was part of a
group of teachers, administrators
and parents that was called the
Demographics Committee or
Housing Committee. Tius repre-
sentative group was supposed to
provide the board with input for
dealing with the bwgeoning
school population that was
expected to outgrow the schools
that were open at that time.
• Should some elementary
schools have to give up'libraries,
computer·labs, and music rooms,...._.
or should we move boundanes?
• Should we move the school
boundartes for four sc:hools to
keep a kindergarten-through-
sixlh-grade configuration or open
up a school as a fifth-and sixth-
grade school for a zone?
• Would magnet schools draw
enough students to prevent
redrawing boundaries?
• Should two high schools
become junior highs and two
high schools stay as high
schools? · •
• Should the district be consis-
tent in grade-level configurations
so that all schools would be
either kindergarten through Sl.Xth
grade or seventh through 12th
grade, or should every zone have
multiple configurations?
Originally, we were to each
look at a small area of the facili-
ties problem, such as where to
house adult education, kinder-
gartners, or alternative edu~a
tion. B.ut, we quickly realized
each subcommittee's work would
impact Ule larger picture. For
that reason, we worked more as
a complete body toward the end.
Our timetable was thrown out
when the Legislature reduced
class sizes in grades bne through
three, which meant that the dis·
trict needed a lot more class~
rooms by September. At that
point, our committee was dis-

Finally, I thought, here will be
a committee to ·deal with how we
are going to fix some of the very
real problems facing the district.
We had school boundary maps
and dassroom occupancy limits.
We could see how a change in
the placement of special educa-
t.ien dasses or adult education
classes could have a donuno
effect on a number of different
issues. The committee wrestled
with where to start:

T he radio station doesn't"
exist anymore but the
friendshi\ls that formed
around the Newport Beach·
based K-OCEAN in the late
eighties are still going strong.
The former crew of the popu-
lar adult-contemporary music
statlo~. as part of an annual tra·
dihon, got together for a holiday
brunch at El Tori to Restaurant at
Fashion lsland on Sunday.
"We've all gone our separate
ways," said Oscar Santoyo, a
former producer and dee1ay,
who is now the -duector of the
Save Our Youth center in Costa
Mesd.
·we haven't seen each other
for a while dnd so it's fun to see
where everyone's going. What
brought us together was K-

that will keep us dose for a long

Also present was fonner sta-

Located at 103.1 on tbe FM
dial. K-OCEAN tapped the com-
munity pulse, prov1dmg · music
and entertainment, tailor made
to appeal to its upper-cliiS!i
Orange County listeners.
And while it was still consid-
ered a "David" compared to the .
· -Los Angeles ".Goliaths," the sta-·
tton was heard as f~r away as
Fullerton and Ani:ihe1m anc.l, in
its heyday, had the largest audi·
encc of any Orange County·
based radio station .
Along with the standard fare
of news, traffic and community
mformation segments, the sta-
tion played a wide variety of
music including: Midffii Sound
Mc.tthrne,· Barbra Streisand, Neil
Didmond. Roy Orbison, Beach
Boys and Lionel Ritchie.
"lt was such a wonderful
penod, ~ said David Shaff er the
sldllon's then sates manager.
•We were a team that just
worked well together.•
What really set the station
ctpart, however, was it deejays.
J . Lawerence was the man
behind the mike during the
Brcakfdst Club, which aired on
weekdays between 5:30 and 10
d m Lawrence said he was open
to playing listener requests bar-
ring the song, "Feelings." Sens-
ing a responsibility to entertain
dreary morning drivers on their
way to work, he preferred more
upbeat tunes
But the evening deejay,
Michael Wood, played romantic,
soft-rock melodies. Between h.Js
soothtng voice and the mellow
tunes h.e came to be known as
the ·Love God.• ,
The station was also known
for its extravdgant giveaways. In
con1unction with locd.1 business-
es, the station gave away every-
thing from concert tickets. and

"We called it the 'Lifestyles of

Lyons said

ANAHEilvt -After chiseling away nt the
armor of highly regarded rivals all week., the
Newport Harbor High boys basketball team
finally ran into dn mdestnictible Brea Olinda
squad in the title game of the Edison Holi-
day Festival Saturday at the Anaheim Con·

•That's a very, very good, athletic (Brea)
ballclub, • Newport Cod.ch Larry l lirst said
after a 61-36 setback, which denied the
Sailors (4· 1) a . season-opening five-game
winning streak for the first time in 34 yeafl).
"As coaches, we try to find a wedk link. in
our opponent, but we couldn't find one
tonight.•
The Sailors, playing in thelI first tourna-
ment tiile game since the 1993 Daily Pilot
Tip-Off Classic, foWld little give in the Wild·
cats {4·1).
After Harbor scored six straight points to
claim an 8-6 lead with 2:26 left in the open-
ing quarter, Brea rolled off 10 straight points
~o spark a 22-3 run, which virtually for~
the Tars to settle for second place.
Only a Dustin Illingworth free throw
interrupted a Wildcat flurry of five straight
three-pointers. which pushed the lectd to31-12.
Matt Hearlson sank two foul shot.it, before
senior guard Kyle Dodd hit a 19-footer with
six seconds left in the first half, giving Brea
a 33-14 cushion at the break.
Dodd, who drained three of Brea's seven
three balls, finished with 24 pomts to garner
tournament MVP laurels. He hit 9 of 15
field-goal tries to help the Wildcats finish 22
of 44 from the floor, while Barbor made Just
13 of 39 (33.3%).

exact same things, like pressure the wings
and play good half-court defense. But when
you shoot 33% against a team that good, the
outcome is going to be the same as it was for
us torugbt.•
Seruor guard Matt Jameson, who Joined
Illingworth on the all-tournament toarn, was
the only Sailor to make more than two held
goals. He finished with 11 points.
But the week-long efforts of Jameson,
Illingworth, fellow starters Alan Limon,
Gary Robinson and Ai;iam Hearlson, as well
a.s key reserves Billy Clayton and Aaron
Yamal. helped the Tars tum some head .

SANTA ANA -The boys bas-

High and San Cleme nte had two
things in common Saturday
night 'First, both were trying to
show how good they really were,
since much wasn't expected from

Second, and more unportanUy,
they were both in the champlJ

The Sea Kings had a chance to

where the Thtons would have
had to have been careful with

possession, sealing the wm.
For a while, it looked as if San •

COSTA MESA -·When Costa Mesa High's
wrestling team took the mat in the season opener
against Anaheim earlier this month, the Mustangs
had a wrestler at every weight class. To most. it
doesn't sound impressive (although then~ are some
proqrams in Orange County which have trouble
finding even half a roster).
But for first-year coach Matt Kellogg, it's an exot-
ing prospect and a sign of a good future for the.pro-
gram. "We had rune guys who were wrestling their
first match ever.• Kellogg said. ·ot the guys who
had experience. it is mostly limited to just a few
matches." r

Coach: Matt Kellogg
Kellogg, currently e nrolled at Orange Coast Col-
lege, is a graduate of J ohn Azevedo's championship
machine at Calvary Chapel. Kellogg was a sopho-
more when Azevedo took over a program with just
eight wrestlers. He graduated in 1993 with a state
championship ring. Junior} have also emerged as tough competitors
(both bad p1rts m the opener). • . Kellogg believes he has learned a lot from A:J.eve-
do and hopes to bring similar success to Costa Mesa.
•I hope to take this program, tum it around into
something the kids can be proud 'of,• Kellogg said
"I plan on being here a while.•
"They are suC'h tough kids,• Kellogg said. "Tlt••v
are all quick studies and really want to work hard to
get better."
Of the three, Sandoval 1s the only wrestler with
experience. Despite the inexperience of his wrestlers, Kellogg
making plans for next year. He wants Costa Mesa to
be ready now. "I saw the potential we have after the
Anaheim match,• Kellogg said. "If these kids dedi-
cate themselves and put in the time needed, we
have the potential to reach our ultimate goal this
year. To win the Pac.fie Coast League.·
Whether they can reach that remains to be seen
and Laguna Hills, as well as Aliso Niguel, are
expected to have something to say about that. Still.
Kellogg has put together a team with a good work
ethic and an eagerness to learn.
As for the future, Co~ta Mesa has 15 freshmen
practiang with the team, four of which are on. the
varsity roster. Myron Tracy, at 135 pounds, is the
toughest ot the bunch He is joined by freshmen
Luke McLaughlin ( 103), Abraham Agop1an (130)
and Marco Fuente (130), as well dS sophomores
Scott Schepens ( 171) and Anthony GrublSlch
(heavywc1ght).
Senior Gus Sandoval, who came back "to wm an
overtime match against Anaheim at 215 pounds, has
emerged as the team captain. Frederico Arrona (160
pounds, senior) and Fernando Arrona (189 pounds,
"I think Costa Mesa wrestling has a gTeat future
ahead," Kellogg said. •1 was in the same place they
are when I wao; at Calvary Chapel. I know what.Jt's
µke to see a program go from where they are to one
of the best m the nation m JUSt three years.
"I hope I can bnng some of the same success their
program.·
