FIVE EASY QUESTIONS Bill Pierpoint Wrth the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade set to sail Thursday, we thought we'd ask Bill Pierpoint. who is chairman of the Boat Para~e Committee, a few burning questions. Since you're the chairman of the committee, does that mean you get to ride on the best yacht7 We beg, steal, borrow and get on our knees to get on the lead boat, and the lead boat lS nonnally considered the best boat. Is there food onboard? " My wife definitely hopes there'll be some hors d'oeurvres. It's always a pleasant surprise. And it's Christmas, it's time to put on weight. Which would you rather eat onboard: meatballs, raw veg- gies or finger sandwiches? We'd like to have Clayton Shurley's barbecue nbs. Clay- ton's from Texas, and he's got the best bdrbecue ribs you ever tasted. He's got barbe- cue ribs up to his armpits. Can a boat have too many lights7 As long as the number of lights on the boat doesn't exceed the number of lights on the Empire State Bwldmg. That's the gwdeline. Has anyone ever gone off course during the parade? Only those who have had a little bit too much chardon- nay. David Wayne Lyman, the Irvine man charged with peeking underneath a woman's skirt with a video camera at Fashion Island, is scheduled to go to trial today. This meeting stdrted out a lot like the community meeting that was held when Mac Bernd first t~ over as superintendent. If Y•U will recall, a steering com- nii,!tee had come up with a list o( possible community gools that the larger community meeting was asked to discuss and prion- tize. As expected, thoc;e goals · that encompassed the more glob- al issues were the ones at the top o( edch table group's list. As I recall, those goals were that all children in the district would be learning at or above grade level. In addition, the schools would meet all of the needs that schools are supposed to meet. Each table group used a big piece of pa~r and wrote their answers on the paper for all to see. We were filled with excitemt>nt in this new era of partidpation. The next educationally related committee I sat on was a school- based site whme our school was selected to partake in a school plan as part of a group at the Orange C'ounty Department of Education We spent months learning why we wanted to reach a tonsensus and how to act as facilitator;. Then we spent EDUCATIONALLY SP E IK I N.G .· gay 'Qeiser-sondovol ·more months coming up with a vision statement using a fish's skeleton as ow pattern. In March 1997, I was part of a group of teachers, administrators and parents that was called the Demographics Committee or Housing Committee. Tius repre- sentative group was supposed to provide the board with input for dealing with the bwgeoning school population that was expected to outgrow the schools that were open at that time. • Should some elementary schools have to give up'libraries, computer·labs, and music rooms,...._. or should we move boundanes? • Should we move the school boundartes for four sc:hools to keep a kindergarten-through- sixlh-grade configuration or open up a school as a fifth-and sixth- grade school for a zone? • Would magnet schools draw enough students to prevent redrawing boundaries? • Should two high schools become junior highs and two high schools stay as high schools? · • • Should the district be consis- tent in grade-level configurations so that all schools would be either kindergarten through Sl.Xth grade or seventh through 12th grade, or should every zone have multiple configurations? Originally, we were to each look at a small area of the facili- ties problem, such as where to house adult education, kinder- gartners, or alternative edu~a tion. B.ut, we quickly realized each subcommittee's work would impact Ule larger picture. For that reason, we worked more as a complete body toward the end. Our timetable was thrown out when the Legislature reduced class sizes in grades bne through three, which meant that the dis· trict needed a lot more class~ rooms by September. At that point, our committee was dis- r-" .. Kellogg was a sopho- more when Azevedo took over a program with just eight wrestlers. He graduated in 1993 with a state championship ring. Junior} have also emerged as tough competitors (both bad p1rts m the opener). • . Kellogg believes he has learned a lot from A:J.eve- do and hopes to bring similar success to Costa Mesa. •I hope to take this program, tum it around into something the kids can be proud 'of,• Kellogg said "I plan on being here a while.• "They are suC'h tough kids,• Kellogg said. "Tlt••v are all quick studies and really want to work hard to get better." Of the three, Sandoval 1s the only wrestler with experience. Despite the inexperience of his wrestlers, Kellogg making plans for next year. He wants Costa Mesa to be ready now. "I saw the potential we have after the Anaheim match,• Kellogg said. "If these kids dedi- cate themselves and put in the time needed, we have the potential to reach our ultimate goal this year. To win the Pac.fie Coast League.· Whether they can reach that remains to be seen and Laguna Hills, as well as Aliso Niguel, are expected to have something to say about that. Still. Kellogg has put together a team with a good work ethic and an eagerness to learn. As for the future, Co~ta Mesa has 15 freshmen practiang with the team, four of which are on. the varsity roster. Myron Tracy, at 135 pounds, is the toughest ot the bunch He is joined by freshmen Luke McLaughlin ( 103), Abraham Agop1an (130) and Marco Fuente (130), as well dS sophomores Scott Schepens ( 171) and Anthony GrublSlch (heavywc1ght). Senior Gus Sandoval, who came back "to wm an overtime match against Anaheim at 215 pounds, has emerged as the team captain. Frederico Arrona (160 pounds, senior) and Fernando Arrona (189 pounds, "I think Costa Mesa wrestling has a gTeat future ahead," Kellogg said. •1 was in the same place they are when I wao; at Calvary Chapel. I know what.Jt's µke to see a program go from where they are to one of the best m the nation m JUSt three years.
