Thunk you for bemg brave enough to pnnt
the Dec. 10 :Joseph Bell column about Chris-

One problem in our society is we do not
internali7.e morabty. This has been perpetuat-
ed by the notion of a pumshipg heavcn-and-
hell-type God. People are taught to behave
only to avoid punii;lunent. When rehgion
breaks down or pt~ople lose faith, people see
no wasoo to behave. A far better way to
!Pach morality 1s to teacJl, by example, a
respect for all living things. We must not vto·

W 1th the coUe9e football
postsedson on us, I am
reminded of how puz-
zled I was last year when Wdsh-
ington State went to the Rose
Bowl for the flJ'St tirrie in 66 years.
'How come it went in 1931? Good
· question.
I was an undergradudte al
USC in 1931. At that time, USC
was a football powerhouse. It
was winrung Pacific Coast Con-
ference titles and national cham-
pionships right and left So what
happened in 1931? Ho~ come a
hokey little college in the high-.
desert country of eastern Wash-
ington, spitting distance from
Idaho and boasting an enroll-
ment of about 4,000 went to the
Rose Bowl instead of USC? 1
couldn't remember, and since
there are not too many people
still alive who might help me
remember, I took recourse to
some old college yearbooks
gathenng dust in my garage. ·
And there I found part of the
answer.
That year USC was indeed a
football powerhouse. ll outscored
ii.$ opponents 262 to 66. Winning
margins of 50 to 70 points were
not unusual. Unhappily, m the
first game of the season it was
beaten by Washington State, 7 to
6. I guess John Baker, the drop
kicker (this was before place
kicking) must have shanked one.'
How could litUe Washington
State have ruined USC's season 7
l decided to call my old friend,
Jess Watson, who I knew had
played football at Washington
State a long time ago However,
he denied having played on the
1931 team.
•rm not that old,~ he
growled.
Still, he had played there dur-
ing the late '30s, so I asked him
how Washington State beat USC
that year. His answer came in
two names, Mel Hein and Turk
Edwards. They played on that

Mel Hein dnd Turk Edwards
are, or were, two of the greats of
football,· college and professional.
Both are football immortals. Mel
played center on offense, guard
on defense. Turk played tackle
on both offense and defense.
When the so-called Thundering
,
robert
gordner
1 Herd ran mto Mel Hem and Turk
Edwards, the Thundering Herd
came to a crashing halt. So there
was my answer. That's why
Washington State went to the
Rose Bowl in 1931 and the gredt
USC team stayed home.
As I prowled through those
yearbooks, which hadn't been
opened for probably 50 years,
two things caught my eye. FtrSt,
football players were much
smaller then. Emie Smith, ~e

Thot's why, moments after the final

CdM wilted against Bellflower's fulJ-

CdM, which comirutted nine turnovers

Opening lead: Ace of•
lbere are some hands where your
holding and the bidding allow you to
place every important card. To illus-
trote our point. cover the East-West
hands. study I.he auction and place I.he
missing key cards. West leacb the ace
of clubs and conti nues with the queen
in a fut ile allempt to give partner a
ruff.
Tu bid two no trump, East should
have the king of spades, ace of hearts
and queen of diamonds, so West's
oven:all is obviously based on a long,
ood club suit and little else Si
you an= unhk.ely to make four heans
1f crumpt do not bfeu 3-2. you
should now ha~e enough infonnation
to P!ay the hand in a doublc-<Jummy
fObhlOfl.
Win the king of clubs at trick·two. d1~arding a spade from hand.
Preserving your length in diamonds
ls necessary to reach a winning end
position. Now l~d a uump and,
when East plays low, rise with the
queen. /u expected, lhis holds the
trick. Return to dummy· with the k.ing
of diamonds and lead another heart.
It does not help East to play low
again, so let's suppose East nses with
the ace ind exits with a trump, leav-
inJ you to do your own worit. You
wan and run the trumps. coming
down to Q I 0 of $J>*les and A 6 or
diamonds an dummy opposite A S of
spades and J 1 or diamonds'" hand. e&st. who must keep the guarded
king of spades, is f~ down to K x
of spades and Q x of diamonds.
'I1lC groundwork for the endplay is
complete Cash the winner in either
suit and continue that su1L East must
win and give you the fulfilling trick in
