Tuesday's vote means 200
business owners will have to

The city for 37 yea.rs has
picked up any trash in curb-

pay private companies to
pick up their trash.
Because the measure
includes only current resi-
dents in the continued free
pickup. residents of areas
annexed later will likely pay
for service.
The City Council in July
voted 6-1 to put the measure
on the ballot, with Mayor
John Hedges casting the
lone vote against it. City staff
reports estimated the mea-
sure will save $250,000 per
year.
Placing last with only 4.3% of
the vote was James Fisler, whose
campaign focused with single-
minded intensity on purging ille-

Even Casey Evans, the 21-year-

1\vo stories in particular last
week ~sed my own experience
in evocative ways: the unsigned

the icy dismissal by the FBI of

a suspect in the Olympic bomb-

For the past year, my wife and
I have been the facu, lty advisers
to the weekly student newspaper
at Fullerton College. Last spring,
one of our editors decided unilat-
erally to take an editorial stand
on behalf of the newspaper that
was both inappropriate and dld
not reflect a consensus position.
When I saw the editorial, 1t
was ready for the printer I
stopped the process, assembled
the other editors, and dsked them
to read it and tell me ( 1) iJ U1ey
agreed with its thesis and (2) Lf
they thought it should be pub-
lished as a reflecllon of the news-
paper's position.
All of them answered dn
emphatic "No" to both questions.
So we pulled the ed..itoridl and
told the writer he was perfectly
welcome to resubmit it as d
signed commentary on the opin-
ion page.

r'm quite aware of all the cracks
this sort of thing can fall through.
But I think students -and maybe
a few alleged grown-ups, too -
need to understand that their
opinions are just that: opinions.
And to assume that they grow
from some sort of absolute truth
with which everyone else should
agree -if they don't already -is a
kind of arrogance of which we
already have too much.
Which leads me into the FBI's
cold-eyed, unapolog~tic notifica-
tion of Atlanta security guard
Richard Jewell that he was no
longer a suspect in the bombing.
After screwing up his life for
three months -and maybe forev-

C orona del Mar High
defensive line coach
Roger Roelle plans lo say
hello to rival Newport Harbor
coaches before Friday night's
Battle of the Bay XXXV.
This is progress.
•Feelings have changed since
the old days," said Roelle, a 1981
CdM graduate whose reflections
of competing against the Sailors
as a player revolve around
passionate -shall we say -
dislike.
·sack then, the conununity
was more segregated, so you
didn't have guys growing up and
playing Junior All-American
togethe.r," Roelle explained.
"Corona had a bout 2,500 kids
and Newport had 3,000-4,000
or so and there was much more
animosity.
"Today, the conununity is
smaller and the guys all know
each other. After the game
(Friday), the kids are going to
shake hands and be somewhat
friendly with one another. Back
when I played, I wanted to beat
the (Tar) out of those guys. When
the game was over, I'd just as
soon have punched them in the
nose as shaken their hands."
0 As for specific memories of his
two varsity Battle of the Bay
encounters, Roelle, then a
standout defensive lineman, is a
little hazy.
·vou're talking to someone
with a poor memory anyway,"
said Roelle, who was 0-2 against
Harbor as a player, and is 2-3 as
a varsity assistant, including two
games in 1992.
"I remember snapshots of
those games, but I was the type
of player that got so psyched up,
I almost lost all consciousness. I
played well in both games, but I
don't remember much. I don't
think I could tell you what I did.•
0 Roelle said the last two years,
a 7-6 Harbor victory in 1994 and
last year's 7-3 Harbor upset, were
some of the best games he's ever
seen, with huge crowds and an
electric atmosphere.
Will his deep-seeded disdain
for the school across the bay
make for a fervent pep talk this
week?

By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
ORANGE -University High has the grey-

Still, Mustangs Coach Joe Busi had con-
cerns Tuesday in the Pacific Coast League
boys cross country finals at Irvine Park.
MThat's a big, awesome thing, finishing
two-thrE!~Ffour, but Santa Ana put three run-
ners in the top five and lost to Tustin in the
Golden West League finals," Busi said. "It
went to a sixth man and Tustin won."
Mesa didn't need a sixth-runner count. It
won its second consecutive PCL title in reg-
ulation behind Bruce Hancock, Jaime Car-
'rillo and Eric Solis, while Marcelo Martinez
and Francisco Ortiz scored from the back.
University senior Martin Brix won the
race in 15:36, followed by Hancock (15:40),
Carrillo (15:59) and Solis (16:15), labeled this
season as Mesa's three big dogs.
Hancock, a sophomore, had the most
impressive performance, running 30 sec-
onds quicker than his time last year, when
he firushed seventh overall.
Ml expected to do that," Hancock said of
his vastly improved clocking from a year
ago. "I didn't want to be seventh. I was hap-
py with (seventh place) last year, but I want-
ed to be a big dog."
Rival coacn Bill Sumner (Corona del Mar)

0 Before the game's outcome ls
decided, there will be one big
winner at halftime, when the
Newport Harbor Gnctiron Club
announces the wmner of its
fourth annual $10,000 raffle.
Raffle chairman Tom Hogan
said just more than a dozen of
the 200 tickets, which sell for
$100 each (half the proceeds go
to the program and the other half
to the winner), were available as
of Tuesday afternoon.
"I had about 15 tickets left
before last year's game. but there
were people lined up to buy
them. sol'think we'll sell out."
said Hogan, who will be
circulating on the Newport
(home) side, beginning about 90
minutes before the 7:30 kickoff.
0 Though the annual
homecoming game draws alumni
back each fall, the Battle of the
Bay is more likely each year to
find former players from both
schools in the stands, or along
the sidelines .
Former CdM legend Jerrott
Willard, the 1989 C IF Southern
Section Division VI Player of the
Year, All-American linebacker at
Cal, and a 1995 fifth-round 'draft
pick of the Kansas City· Chiefs,
will likel}"be among the
interested spectators Friday.
Willard, who spent all of last
season on mjured reserve and
retired this year, rather than
continue rehabilitating badly
damaged knees, was at last
week's 48-13 loss to El Toro.
Willard will be looking for
better results from the Sea Kings,
who gave up a school-record
point total against he Chargers.
ln Willard's Junior and senior
campaigns, both CIF Division VI
championships. Coach Dave
Holland's defenses yielded just
82 and 109 points, respectively,
for entire 14-game seasons.
CJ On the subject of stlhm'
defenses, the Battle of the Bay
has annually been a showcase
for same. ln 22 of the previous 34
CdM-Newport meetings, the
losing team has scored one TD or
less and there have been 13
shutouts, including three of the
last sue games.
