Their first roW1d opponent in the Artesia Tournament, Mark

For a halt, 1t looked as if the Sailors would hang tight and
have a chance to win. But the Aztecs dominated ·the thiid
quarter and walked away with an easy, 40-32, victory at
Artesia High.

HAWAIIAN GARDENS
When a team hasn't had any
competiuon m 12 days and has
only had practice, like Costa
Mesa High's girls basketball
team for example, the shooting
.can be a little rusty when the
team tdkes the floor. Faqor in a
good team like the Diamond Bar
Brahmas and you have a recipe
for disaster.
Diamond Bar shut out the
Mustangs in the second quarter
and rolled to a 56-25 victory
Thursday in the first round of the
Artesia Tournament at the
Hawaiian Gardens Community
Center.
"I don't know what our shoot-
mg percentage was, but I know it
wasn't very good,~ Costa Mesa
Coach Jim Weeks said "I wdS
afraid we'd be a little rusty
because of the layoff. but they are
also a great tedm. •
Diamond Bar, which is the
only team lo have defeated Mark
Keppel this season, improved to
6-1. Brahma5. Coach Tony
McCabe was quick to point out
that if the two teams meet agdin
in the upcoming Costa Mesa
tournament, it should be d closer
game.
"It's tough to come off a layoff
like that against a team that's
hoV McCabe said. "But Jim is a
great coach and iJ we see lhem
again, we can expect a lot
tougher game."

College women's
basketball coach Mike
Thomton called iJl the Pirates'
78· 77 loss to San Di.ego Mesa
last Friday, he feared the worst
in regards to the knee injury
sustained by starting point guard
Adria Sortino in the final five
seconds of the game.
"I thought the way the injury
happened that it would be
career-ending," Thon;iton said.
~When we looked at it on tape,
we definitely thought her season
was over."
Miraculously, upon medical
examination, Sortino's injury is
just a badly-sprained knee and
she is already off crutches.
"She wants to play this
weekend/ Thomton said. "But
there's no way I'll risk it. We
have six days off alter our
tournament and cJon't play again
until Dec. 29. That would be the
earliest she'd be back on the
floor for us."
With Sortino out, it will make
this weekend's Coast Christmas
Classic a lot tougher for the
Pirates. Thornton will move
freshman Erin Tomlinson to point
guard and bring freshman Leah
Wilde off the bench to play
off-guard.
~we still have 10 players who
can play,• Thornton said. "But
Adria set the tone for our
offense. We'll pr.obably lose
effectiveness in our full-court
press, but it's our intensity thdt
will suffer most."
• The Inte nsity ts w hy Sortino
was injured in the first place
With the Pirates trailing by one
against San Diego Mesa and just
seven seconds left, the Pirates
tried to fee d the mbound pass to
Natalle Weeks at nud-court. The
pass was deflected and there
was a loose ball.
Sortino and another player
collided, but Sortino came up
with the ball. Half bent over, a
San Diego Mesa player
accidentally ran into her, result-
ing in the injury.
"It's the way she plays,"
Thornton said. "She doesn't
know any other way. Wbat was
amazing, after looking at the
replay, that no foul was called."
• U Orange Coast plays its cards
tight, there could be a rematch
Sunday afternoon in the
title game ot the Oassic.
The Pirates open up tonight at
7:30 against Cuesta, a team they
beat at the Cuesta Tournament
by 10 in the championship game.
"We didn't shoot well in that
game.· Thornton said.
»Hopefully we can come out
better. If we shoot well, we
should beat them. H
°Looking ahead at the possible
matchups, Fullerton should ~at
Southwestern at 5:30. It would
set up the first meeting of the
season for the Orange Empire
Conference rivals m the
semifinals Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The winner goes on to the
championship game Sunday at 4
p.m. Chattey, Cerritos and San
Diego Mesa flTe expected to fight
it out for the other championship
berth.
"I would really b.ke to play
them (San Diego Mesa.) agam,"
Thornton said "The game
wasn't lost in the final seconds lt
was lost on the offens1:ve boards
"We had just three offesnive
rebounds. Never m my 25 years
of coaching have J ever heard of
such a thing. At the very least
you get five by dCC'tdent. That's
where the game was lost.•
