Don't despair. When you toss

about 12 months anyway. It's bit-
tersweet, this business of electing

with the elephant -you do
indeed win some, lose some, and
some, well, you know ftte rest.
As far as the top of the ticket
goes, this one was the best
example ever of the principle
upon which all politics is based.
Repeat the next two sentences a
few times. If you can remember
them, you'll know more about
the whole quirky business than
many candidates and alleged
experts ever do.
1. There iS no connection
between politics and reality.
2. Politics is perception. Take
the presidential race -please.
Just two months ago, a few thou-
sand of us cheered Messrs. Dole
and Kemp at the Orange County
Fairgrounds as they kicked off
their post-convention campaign.
Tuesday night, Jack Kemp stood
at a microphone at the Westin
and thanked everyone for their
support.
There are at least 1,000 rea-
sons why Bob Dole lost. Two of
them matter. If you lump the oth-
er 998 together, they still don't
equal the first two.
Reason one. File this under
"the big one." Most Americans
ask two things of a president -a
good economy and no wars. War
was not an issue and, for what-
ever reason, the vast majority of
voters believed the economy was
on the upswing, more or less -a
devastating combination for
Dole.

This year, most people
answered in the affirmative.
Whether they really were or not
is irrelevant. All that matters is
that they believed they were. As
Rep. Chris Cox pointed out early
on, it was a stunning example of
the power of perception. In reali-
ty, the economr during most of
the 1996 campaign was a mirror
image of the economy of the
1992 campaign.

to the ring, a common
response was "good credentials,
too old." Those who so opined
were right, but for the wrong
reason. At 70-plus, Bob Dole is in
better shape than most men 30
years his .junior. A striking
image at his camp~gn kickoff at
·the !$grounds sticks in my
mind. .
Dole was trying to reach some
people outside a chest-high steel
barrier surrounding the dais. He
placed his good hand on the
·steel rail and vaulted effortlessly
over the barrier, The 30-if-not-
late-20s Secret Service agents
near him scrambled around the
barrier, not one of them daring to
try the same move.
Bob Dole's age was irrelevant.
Unfortunately, his perce'ived age
was not. To most voters, Dole
was their grandfather. A good

In the midst of the quiet but

to choose the person who would

NEWPORT BEACH -City
officials have reached a tentative
contra.ct agreement with the
raok-and-file firefighters' union
i ~thA.\'i>ro\ides fer an unspecified
raise and allows firefighters to
cash out their vacation time.
The city's talks with the police
union, however, remain dead-
locked.
The firefighters' agreement
comes after about a year of
negotiations, stalling over vaca-
tion time and the method for cal-
culating salary increases. The
new agreement leaves the fire-
fighters content, though less
than enthusiastic, union presi-
dent Rich Thomas said.
"We're not doing backflips,"
he said.
The firefighters union agreed
its members will ~sen· the city
half of their collective vacation
time, accepting pay in.stead ot
time '6~ arrangement save.
the dty from paying them over~
time for holidays, city Adminis-
trative' Services Director Dennis
Danner said.
The good news for firefight-
ers: They'll get a retroactive raise
to Oct 1 and another raise on
March 1. The city calculates
sala.J:ies using a formula based
on average firefighter pay in oth-,
er cities.
When they calculate the
March raise, they'll use the aver-
ages the union wanted them to
use -figures from June 1996.
Police talks, however, have
remained stalled.

NEWPORT BEACH -lbrow out the
records? You bet.
The rivalry-game cliche fits in the foot-
ball Battle of the Bay between Newport
Harbor High Sailors and Corona del Mar
Sea Kings, who face off fo r the 35th time
tonight at 7:30 at Newport Harbor.
ln the 19 games the two Back Bay rivals
have entered this cross-town clash without
identical records, the team with the better
LET.

record has lost 11 times. The underdog has
come out on top 4 of 6 games in the 1990s
(they met twice in 1992, the latter a CIF
Southern Section Division IV semifinal).
The upset trend may be good news for
Corona del Mar (4·4, 1-2 in the Sea View
League), which enters as the dear under-
dog against the Sailors (7-1, 2-1), ranked
No. 9 in Orange County and No. 3 in CIF
Southern Section Division V.
The Sea Kings have, in fact, won six of
the last nine times they faced a Newport
team with a better record, including a trio
of shutout triumphs in 1987, '91 and the
first meeting in '92.
Newport leads the series. 23-1 1.
CdM Coach Dick Freeman said his
players won't be intimidated by the high-
ly-touted Sailors.
"I don't think Newport was picked as
anything going into this season, but it has
just come on," Freeman said. "Our kids
realize Newport plays pretty good football,
but as far as emphasizing the underdog
role, it's not something we've made a big
deal about."
Newport Coach Jeff Brinkley is also dis-
interested· in making a big deal of the
annual clash, preferring to fit the dash into
his one-game-at-a-time philosophy.

"(The rivalry) is not a big emphasis for
us, H explained Brinkley, whose squad
would lock up a postseason berth with a
win, the eighth in Brinkley's 11-year
tenure.
MWe know if we win this week, we go to
the playoffs. That's certainly what is moti-
vating the coaching staff; the chance to
move one step closer to our goal of playing
14 weeks (reaching the CIP title game)."
To pull off the upset, the Sea Kings will
need to come up with their best defensive
effort to date, as they hope to limit a New-
port offense averaging nearly 39 points per
game.
Newport bas shown some vUlnerability
on defense (yielding 77 points in league),

Laguna Hills Coach Steve Bresnahan,
who notched bis 17th straight league win,

the Mustangs' snarl.
"Costa Mesa is a physical football team,
but I don't think we played with much emo-

It was sure tough to tell, however, when
all-world running back Mike Jones bolted 53

putting the Hawks ahead for good with only
69 seconds elapsed.
Mesa forced Laguna Hills to punt on its
next possession, but H aw k comerback
Dustin Mang picked up a fumble<t pitch on
Mesa's ensuing play and re turned it 25 yards
for a touchdown with 3:41 left in the opening
quarter.
Mesa's defense stepped up from there, as
Vince Ha.made recovered a Jones fumble to
end one drive and Ben Felter made a leaping
interception to halt another.
The Mustang offenH, however, couldn't
keep bold of the ball. or lts punter off the
field, finally setting up the visitors at the Mesa 32 after a punt from
their own end zone with 2:40 left in the half.

Jones sealing the deal from 2 yards out with his second of three touch-

COSTA MESA -Pride like
never before experienced in
Costa Mesa High's freshmen

. ~each player following the tradi-
tional handshake line.
They screamed and shouted
after acknowledging each
member of Laguna Hills, then
sprinted toward their mentor,
head coach John Carney.
They are tomorrow's varsity
Mustangs, today's Pacific Coast
League champions.
It was Camey, Mesa's veter-
an coach for all. seasons, who
instilled in his players a •total
commitment" attitude at the
beginning of the season, as well
as an unstoppable pitch-and-
trap offense that mirrors Mesa's
varsity of 1993, when the Mus-
tangs buUdozed their way to the
CIP Southern Section Division vm title game.
With wingback Jimmy Her-
zog-shouldering the load (279
yards on 43 carries), the host
Mustangs defeated previously
unbeaten Laguna Hills, 28-20,
in a PCL showdown Thursday.
Costa Mesa (8-1, 4-0 in
league) finishes its season next
week against woeful Laguna
Beach. Its win over Laguna Hills
(7-1-1, 3-1) gave Mesa what is
believed to be the school's first
.outright league title. Mesa's
freshmen team a year ago end-
ed 1-9.
The Mustangs, who shared a
PCL title in '93 with Laguna
Hills. had even· more on their
minds after thumping the
Hawks. Among the player·
chants overheard included, ·we
want Newport Harbor!"
Then there was this from
Camey; •Who owns the

players . . . with the simple
response, ·we dot"
It wasn't all so simple for the
Mustangs in their momentous
victory, though, as the Hawks
continually threatened with a
passing game that rocked
Mesa's secondary.
But Herzog was the equaliz-
er.
Behind Lucas Benson (left
tackle), Shaun Ferryman (left
guard), Chaz Hunter (center),
Eliseo Martinez (right guard),
Robert Hulliger (right tackle),
Eliseo Martinez (right guard)
and tight ends Jermain Hassell
and Jas9ll Rankin, Herzog was
able to slash, cut and dart away
from Laguna Hills defenders.
Herzog, who , possess
strength and breakaway speed,
scored three touchdowns and
ran for a two-point conversion.
After Laguna Hills quarter-
back Brandon Champlin burned
Mesa on a 13-yard scoring pass
to Chris Bernard (six catches for
125 yards and two touchdowns)
early in the third quarter to tie
the game, 12-12, the Mustangs
came back, picking up in the
second halt where they left off at
halftime.
Herzog had 125 rushing
yards (14 carries) after his sec-
ond touchdown, when 8:10
remained in the second quarter.
Mesa had 200 rushing yards in
the first half -188 by Herzog-
as the Mustangs held a 12-6
halftime lead.
The Hawks scored in the first
half on a 61-yard pass play from
Champlin to Jay Dale. Cham-
plin completed 11 of 20 passes
for 239 yards and three touch-
downs (one interception).
But the Mustangs continued
to roll on the ground in the third
quarter, as Herzog capped a
seven-play, 60-yard drive with a
17-yard scoring run, in which
Herzog cut left af\er taking a
bandoff from Mesa quarterback
David Weir on a trap play to the
right side.
On the previous play, Herzog
carried 18 yards from the Hawk
35-yard line, before Ryan Tolly
made a touchdown-preventing
tackle.
Herzog added a two-point
run to give Mesa a 20-12 lead
..with uaremajnjng in the.third
quarter.
That's when the Mustang
defense stiffened. Among other
big plays in Laguna Hills' ensu-
ing possession, Rankin liad a
quarterback sack (minus-4
yards}, Herzog stopped Francis-
co Ballardo for minus-2 yards
from his linebacker position,
and Hunter and Rankin com-
bined to force a fumble (recov-
ered by the Hawks).
Hunter had two other key
stops on the drive, before an

The fear of an enemy ruff can be
aa devastating aa the fact itself.
South went down in a cold live-club
contract on this)land, and had no
one else t.o blame.
The auction hit the mark, but
was very revealing. Since neither
North nor South bid no trump and
111.aRgercd into five clubs instead, it
wa11 obvious that neither hnd a
11pade stopper. Thnt made the open·
ing lead easy, as well as the 11ubse-
quenl play .
CHEVROLET 9045 GMC
West attacked with the ue or
1padel and eontinued with the four
in response to Eaat's 1ipal with die
jack. After winning the )line, East
continued a spade. Declarer did not
think that West would have et.arted
the ace of spades from A Q '4 so,
convinced that Weat waa going to
· ruff, declarer trumped with the
queen. As the cards lay,'Weat's jack
of clubs was now promot.ed t.o the
\et.ting trick.
There was a naw in declarer's
reasoning. Have you spotted it?
If West has started wit.h a dou·
blet.on ace of 11padc1, East would
have held six apodea with 100 hon·
ors. In that event, F..nat would cer·
tainly have entered the bidding,
either with an ovel'C811 of one spade
or a weak jump lo l)llO spades.
Therefore, West hod t.o have anoth-
er spade, so declarer could have
ruffed low with impunlty.
Another clue wa1 West's play t.o
the first trick. With 100 honors In
spades, the defender would have
signaJed more emphat.ically, proba-
bly with the lting. But. that does not
detract from West's well-reasoned
opening lead.
