But after s1tttng tn on a cou-

For Watt, it's just another environment
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Prior
• EDt'TOf''S NOTE: This is the firrt m a se~.s of

leaders who are stepping down from the dais.
J ean Watt's first fo ray mto Newport
Beach politics turned out to be a
lesson in losing -she helped with a
City Council campaign that ultimately
lost.
Helping with that losing election
taught her that getting people onto the
council wasn't enough to make a differ-
e nce. So she started an environmental-
activist group, Stop Polluting Our New-
port, that bas continued to the present.
And 14 years after helping with that
failed campaign in 1988, she won her
own run for a council seat. Then sh e
skated to easy re-election four yea.rs Jet-
er.
,Now, because of term limits, the 69-
yeaM>ld's time on the council has run
out. She will no longer provide the offi-
dal voice for District 5, which includes

she plans to continue making her slow,
throaty voice heard in the community,
especially on her favorite subject: the
environment.
·1 will be working m a different
capacity now,· she said, noting that
skirts and pulls her hair back in a bun.
Her battles have included fighting
the John Wayne Airport expansion and
pushing for Newport Bay dredging.
Watt, who grew up in Pasadena, first
came to the city in 1931, when her pa.r-
ents bought a Newport Beach
swruner home She returned
permanently lil 1953 after
graduating from Stanford Uni-
versity, working as a nurse and
marrying Dr. James Watt. Now
a grandmother of five, she
raised her four children in
Newport Beach.
"There are 1,000 things to do
in this community, and I 'm

to try something different ... "

D o~~t knock. t he Russian ~oc.,.~but bless our. Hoag
By Jim Dean
Russia's medical establish-
ment has a long way to go
to join the league of Hoag
Memorial Hospital Presbyterian,
but I survived a two-week trip on
Russian rivers, and I fell in love
with the ship's physician, my Dr.
Lena.
Still, if I were i2"esident Boris
Yeltsin, I would nave opted for
Hoag for that heart surgery. One
can cany hometown loyalty fur-
ther than prudence should allow.
First, let me tell you that Hoag
hospital and its fabulous team
provided the finest care, atten-
tion and feeling of confidence
any tired old world traveler could
find anywhere. So don't give
your money to Clinton, Dole or
Perot, they can't help you. Give it
to Hoag. They can and they do.
Anyway, back to the gurney ...

for New York, changed planes
there for Los Angeles, then a limo
ride to Newport Beach. That's a
lot of miles, a lot of hours, and
even a well man would suffer
from exhaustion, maybe.
So a few hours later we drove
to the Hoag emergency room,
where I became a living prop for
an AllState commercial. I was,
indeed, in good hands, and I
could feel it, right from the start
and through the five days during
which I gradually regained
strength, interest in food and in
what was going on around me. r am told that what I suffered
was heart failure brought on
partly from a chronic lung condi-
tion, no doubt aided by years of
that hard-living journalist's life of
smoking those cigarettes, breath-
ing newsprint and ink dust and
keeping bad company.

Among the digniiartes who
attended the event last year were:
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher; the may-
ors of Costa Mesa and Newport
Beach; retired Marine Corps Lt.
Col. and former Assemblyman Gil
Ferguson of Newport Beach; local
veterans and educators.
But people like Lavrakas, who
spent 31 years of continuous ser-

performing schools are ones which
receive the most outside aid.
The scores also are weighing on
the minds of other local parents,
like Costa Mesa Chamber of Com-
merce President Tony Petros, who is
contemplating whether Newport-
Mesa can provide the best educa-
tion for his children.
"My job as a parent is to expose
my kids to the best education that 1
possibly can,• said Petros, whose
oldest child would enter Kaiser Ele-

year. "H that means going private,
then that's what we'll have to do. ··u the school where she'll be at

Afhole day had passed
smce Orange Coast
ollege women's soccer
.team put the first blemish on
Cypress' perfect record with a
1-1 tie, but OCC Coach Barbara
Bond was still upset with an
official's call.
Cypress, the No. 1 team in the
state, had been awarded a
penalty kiclc about 20 minutes
into Friday's game and the
official whistled for Colby
Morgan to go ahead and take
th.e shot.
Following the whistle.
Morgan used her hands to adjust
the ball which is a violation of
the rules.
•Everybody on our sidelines
was yelling 'hand ball,' but they
let her kick anyway,• Bond said.
In soccer, only the goalie is
allowed to use a hand to touch a
live ball.
•Soccer is really strange,•
Bond said. "It's not like baseball
where you can call timeout and
go argue a call. There's no
recourse. At that point he's judge
and jury.•
Morgan went on to punch the
ball in and give Cypress a 1-0
lead. It only took about two
minutes for OCC, No. 7 in the
state, to come back with Abbie
Erickson's game-tying goaJ, but
the damage was already done.
Bond spent more than an
hour after the game trying to
find out i1 there was a way to
rectify the error, but was told,
under Orange Empire
Conference rules she could not
lodge a protest. No dice.
"It was a big call,• Bond said.

would claim the conference title,
earn a higher seed in the

• Newport Harbor girls volleyball
team seeded No. 4 in Division I-AA
Playoffs; won't play until Tutirsday.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The Newport
Harbor High girls volleyball team, which.
earned its fourth straight Sea View League
championship with a perfect 10-0 record, is
the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section
Division I-AA Playoffs.
Coach Dan Glenn's Sailors (14-3), who
polished off their flawless league campaign
with a sweep of second-place Santa Mar-
garita, drew a first-round bye Tuesday and
will host the winner of Tuesday's Arroyo
Grande-Arcadia clash in Thursday's second
round at 7-p.m.
"1 don't know anything about either of
those teams,• said Glenn, who has the lux-
ury of scouting the first-round match in per-
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
son.
Arcadia ( 10-3) is the champion of the
Pacific League, while Arroyo Grande (11-2)
is the No. 2 representative from the North-
ern League.
The Sailors, ranked seventh in Orange
County and fourth in Division I-AA, appear
destined for a semifinal matchup against
top-seeded Mira Costa (19-1).
Dana Hills (15-1 and ranked fourth in the
county) and Laguna Beach (19-2 and
ranked.fifth in the county) are the No. 2 and
No. 3 seeds, respectively, in the first year of
the regional format which will feed four
regional winners into a Final Four.
Harbor, competing in Region IV, could
also Qa.ve to get past Royal (11-3 and the
No. 6 team in the final I-AA poll) in the
quarterfinals, before earning the likely
rematch with Mira Costa, which terminated
the Tars' playoff run in last year's semifinals
with a 15-6, 15-12, 16-16, 15·11 triumph.
The regional format was designed to
diminish travel costs, but with only four
teams in the division from P range County,
and three of those separated as top region-
al seeds, Newport could face a l~ngthy bus
ride for the Nov. 16 quarterfinals.
· Royal, the likely quarterfinal opponent
for Newport, is in Simi Valley. The other
side of the Region IV bracket also includes
San Gabriel, (Pico Rivera-based) El Rancho
and Quartz Hill.
Harbor elected to •play up• to the top
division in the newly created enrollment-
based format that awards 10 division cham-
pions. The Sailors' three-year enrollment
(used by the section to align schools by divi-
sion) of 1,094 would have placed them
among 37 ill-AA schools.
Corona del Mar, ranked No. 7 in I-AA
and Costa Mesa, ranked No. 10 in ill-A.
failed to earn an at-large bids, due to sub·
.500 overall records.

Newport Coach Jeff Brinkley, who down-

"I think last year (a 4-6 record) had an impact
on them,• Brinkley said. "It did all of us. We had been on a
pretty good roll there (six straight postseason invitations),
then all of a sudden we weren't in the playoffs. I think they
re-evaluated, as did our staff, to try to get this thing back on
track.
"One of the things we have written on the wall of. our field-
house is, 'How do you want to be remembered?' I think this
group wanted to be remember as one of the better teams to
come through this school.•
So far, so good, thanks in large part, according to Briiikley,
to that senior leadership.
~The seniors definitely understand what the program is all
about and, maybe even bigger, they believe in it,• Brinkley
explained. "We've had guys who can act like a Sailor, but you
have to believe what that stands for and what we want out of
the program. This group does that.•
The Sailors still have a shot at sharing the Sea View League
championship with Santa Margarita, if Newport handles win-
less Woodbridge Thursday and Santa Margarita falls to visiting
CdM the same night. But, even if that occurs, the Tars would
be the league's No. 2 playoff representative, on the basis of a
head-to-bead loss to Santa Margarita.
"It would be nice i1 CdM could bounce back and beat those
guys,• Brinkley said. "But we still think that i1 we win, and
with our ranking (No. 3 in Division V), we deserve to be seed-
ed.•
Brinkley said the Thursday game against Wood.bridge will
give the Harbor staff one more chance to scout prospective
playoff opponents Friday night.
"We'll narrow it down to about three scenarios, and try to go
take a look at those teams."
Brinkley said pressuring CdM quarterback Mike McClellan
was the key to shutting down the Sea Kings, dting defensive
end Erich Schader (nine humes) as a catalyst toward that end.
"He definitely had his best game," Brinkley said.

up-the-line to partner's opening bid .
The quality of your suita should not
be taken into account except when
