Feeling blue over expired tags ·
T his can happen to you. Do not drive
without your blue tags on for '98. A
week ago, l was stopped by the Calilor-
rua Highway Patrol in Santa Barbara for
expired tags. He gave me a fix-it notice. All
payments .had been made, nothing delin-
quent, but I failed to notify the Department of
Motor Vehicles that the insurance was in
force.
Saturday, at the busiest time, a Costa Mesa
motorcycle officer pulled me over on the
upper level of the South Coast Plaza parking
lot Nter examining my docwnents, he
informed me that he was gomg to impound
my car and that he would call a cab.
I am an older man with an invalid wile.
The car was taken away, and we were taken
to the OMV on 19th Street, which was
closed, and then home. The cab nde was
$40.
I then drove my car to the Santa Ana OMV
and found out they don't handle registrations
on Saturday. They told me that if I would go
to Bell Gardens, they would handle registra-
tion. I went homf not caring to dnve to Bell
Gardens.
Monday mommg I went to the 19th Street
OMV in Costa Mesa. After wcuting in line for
d half-hour, I showed my-proof of insilrance,
and they gave me the tags. I.then went to the
tow truck yard, and they instructed me to go
to the Costa Mesa police to get the paper-
work signed off, then back to the tow yard.
The charges against the car were for three
day-; and a tow -$176. What I left out is the
stress and the wusled time. Also, the
demeanor and the adversanal manner of the
people I dealt with. The pollct~ ofhccr yelled,
"Get bdck in your car." I showed him the
Highwdy Patrol ticket, and he said, "I'm
going to writ~ you up.''
You can be givE!n a ticket for tho same

Not a good sign of th e times
Your paper ask:;, "A better sign?" ("Dealers

I teel your question should be: "Do we
think we need th1 nty, or do we think the
city should give the dealers ac; oc1ation the

Do you think the city should pdy for the
sign? I say no. And then ht1vc Caltrans to
provide U1c standards? No. Where does this
lead us? Who would bn the next busmcss to
request another sign to l>e added to Harbor
Boulevard?
Our City Council muny years ago went
through and deaned up our signs in th.is
town. It's starling to become a nice visual
cornmuruty. So why should we clutter our
commuruty with another 1gn7 I have lived m
this town for more than 28 ycnrs. I plan on
living here the re::.t of my lire. So I don't want
to have to go out and see an obtrusive sign

Responding to the question. ·oo you think
gun manufacturers should be held legally
responsible for crimes com.nutted with their
fire arms?" ("Taking aim at gun makers,"

As a reader, I would respond yes. They
should be held legally responsible for their
irresponsible de ign and manufacture and
distribution of their firearms that lead to
mjunes dI\d death. So that is d yes.

C alifornia seems to have
developed a unique plan
for improving kinder-

components of the plan are:
1} Admit students to kinder-
garten at a younger age than
any other state.
2) Pack 30 or more of said
students into a classroom.
3) Spend less on their su~
port -libraries, counselors,
social workers, health-care
workers, teachers and trans-
portation ·(field trips, etc.) ...,._.
than other states.
4) Impose the nation's most
rigorous academic nondevelop-
mental curriculum.
5) And do all of this in a lan-
guage most of the students
don't understand.

Those closest to the classroom
receive the most blame for pro-

ill-conceived said programs may
have been. (Classroom teachers

Eminent educators Pete Wil-

the programs, and now master

was supposed to draw a deep
chuckle and a smiling denial.
Instead, the response was a
scowling, "That's a damn he!"

Preparing for
Christmas ..
By Reverend Or. George R. Crisp
T he ,sea.son of Advent is
upon us: a sea.son of
spiritual preparation
for the coming of Christ ac Christ-
mas. The physical preparations for
Christmas are-rather obvious. Most
of chc scores went red and green the
day after Labor Day, no longer wait-
ing for Halloween or Thanksgiving.
The calendar is filling up. There arc
cards and letters to write, goodies to
bake and thing$ to do to ready for
Christmas.
Christians must keep in sight the
fact that this is a holy season. That
is why the spirirual prcp:uation of
the Advent season is so imporra.nt.
In the huscle and bustle, we must
take time to prepare our hearts to
appreciate the birth of Jesus. The
Mcss.iah is coming. The Holy One
of God comes to be born as a
human child so that he could truly
be born in our beans.· If we only
nod to the manger in Bethlehem as
we run from place to place, we may
miss the miracle of God.
Along with the scriptures, ser-
mons and liturgy, the hymns that we
sing in the Advent season (not
Christmas carols) help us to prepare
for Christmas. Merchants may begin
the Christmas theme early, l>ut they
also drop it like a hot potato on
December 26. For the Christia.n
Church, Christmas begins at mid-
night on Otccmber 24 and lasts
uncil JanlJ2tY 5 -the true 12 days of
Christmas. You will hear plenty of
Christmas carols
in the days ahead;
even the malls arc
playing sacred
runes beneath the
jingle of cash reg-
isters. But in the
church, the carols come when Christ
comes and not when the rccaalcrs
start cranlcing up.
Christmas is one of chc church's
high celebrations, whatever rhc ~cu
lar world makes of ir. That's why
churches bold special services and
use additional decorations chat lift
up chis event,
Some years ago, columnist Art
Buchwald, with tongue in cheek.
wrote: "If we allow chc churches to
do business on Christmas, chc holi -
day wiU lose its commercial mean-
ing. We say religion has iu place.
but not at Chnstmas. If we kcc:p chc '
churches open, people will fed a
temptation to go to them. Entire
families may wind up there, and this
could burr the ski resort busine~
Too much t;imc, money and adver-
tising has gone into Christmas to
have a small minority spoil it by
going to church."
Yes, friends, the churches arc
open. Let us all coosp1rc co "spoil"
Chrisc~as by being in church with
our family and friends during the
holy season.
Christ Church by the Sea invites
you to worship at 9:30 Sunday
mornings dunng this holy season
a.nd to attend our special services on
Christmas Eve. We begin with a car-
ol sing at 7 p.m., followed by a
family ~rvicc of lessons,.carols and
candlelight at 7:30 p.m. The service
will include a small chamber ensem-
ble, anthems by the Chancel Choirs
and a tableau of the Holy Family.
The sermon, entitled "No Room"
will be presented by the church's
pastor, Dr. George R. Crisp. ·
A second Christmas Eve service at
11 p.m. will feature lessons, carols,
candlelight and communion. Past0r
Crisp's sermon at this service is enti-
tled .. Unwrapping the Gift."
I'd likc to ·close wit~ a devotional

your ~pirirual preparation for
Christ's coming.

escape to solitude in our tiny three
bedroom house from all the fighting
and bickering. It was constant com-
pcttcion for the "cool" aftcr school
,nacks, the best cartoon channels on
rv and the coziest spots to just
~be."
One day I finally got hold of the
last Hostess Ho Ho in the box. and
found t~e nearest hideout to indulge
in my treasured find . I came across
our old '37 Ford pickup in the back
>'3.rd and without anyone looking, I
\ncaktd in, clo.$Cd the rusry door
ind dove into chat Ho Ho. After a
bit of savoring the delicious wte of
waxy chocolate and sugary cream in
my mouth, J decided to make my
exit, only to find that the inside
door handlo were off and thc win-
dows were too old and stuck to roll
down. Heat and panic set in a.s l
struggled co get out of chc car that
only a moment ago was my salvation
and sanctuary of peace and quict.
Eventually, l was rescued to the
taunting of one of my brothers who
thought st was a just punishment for
bcipg so sneaky. The frustration was
so overwhelming chat I could not
find peace and quiet anywhere. l was
doomed and .hopeless.
So, life is now, yet the stakes arc
higher. With all the turmoil in the
world and in our lives one can easily
get overwhelmed. There often seems
no hope of ~fcty, security and most
of aJI -peace. I believe there is hope
for peace despite the circumstances
in our personal Hvc;s and the chaos
of the world. Otir nature is full of
wrongdoing. "Which is Called sin.
However, God i.s pure, righteous and
holy. The twQ cannot mix and as a · ·
result chcre "µck of peace. God
has provided a way of reconciliation,
because he is .a God of relationship
and not of religion. He has closed
the gap between our sin and himself
through graciously giving us Jesus
Chrisc, hjs one and only son to
stand in that gap through his death
on the cross and bodily resurrection.
Jesus said, "I am the way the truth
and the life, no one can come to the
Father except through me." Uohn
14:6)
Jesus is the way back to making
peace with God. God has given us
his Son for two reasons: one because
it brings him glory and two because
he loves us so much that he wanted
to have fellowship with us. Jesus is
called the Prince of Peace. He has
come to give us abundant life.
As a mother of chrcc children
under the age of four, 1r is still diffi-
cult to find that "quict• place to
relax, but the inner peace is fu-mote
priceless to me. Circumstances and
the pressures of today's society do
not have to consume me and over-
whelm me, because my refuge is in a
huge God who loves me enough to·
provide a way to be in personal tcla-
t1onship with him. He is my hope
and he can be yours too. It is not
found in church, in religion, in
being good or perfect. True pcao: is
found in a surrendered heart to God
through a personal relationship with
Jesus Christ.

HAWAIIAN• GARDENS
Newport Harbor High's four loss-·
es in girls basketball all have one
thing in common, the Sailors have
been getting killed on the boards,
both offensively and defensively
So Coach Gregg Savage
deoded to use the two practices
leading up to Monday's loss to
Lakewood, 47-37, at the Hawai·
ian Gardens Community Center
m the consolation bracket of the
Artesia Christmas Classic, to
teach lus players one of the most
important techruques to better
rebounding, boxmg out.
"We worked on it extensively,"
Savdge said. "We had five or six
dnlls, sometimes Wlthout a ball
JUSt so they would understand
why it works. It is a basic skill
wluch gives a player position and
better rebounding opportunities."
Practices had gone well,
according to Savage, but when
the Sailors (5-4) took the floor
agall\st Lakewood, the hard work
and instruction seemed to disap·
pear. Lakewood (7-4) routinely
dorrunated the parnt after a shot
by either squad, which is one rea-
son the Lancers built a 24-14 lead
at half.time.
·When somebody takes a shot,
everybody either collapses and
hopes they can Jump lugher and
come away with the ball or they
start to fall back to play defense,"
Savage said.
Dissatisfied with the results,
Savage explamed to his players
the gravity of the situation during
hdlftirne. When the Sailors came
out for the second half, there was
a new rule m effect. Any player
failing lo box out would be substi-
tuted for immediately.
"It's disappointing that they
couldn 't carry practice into the
game,• Savage said.
His drastic f>Olution seemed to
help and Newport Harbor was
commg away with more
rebounds, but the Sailors still
c-ouldn't solve the other problem
which has plagued them the past
two games, a lack of offense.

1here is a tendency among dupli·
cate players, when the vulnerabilitl' is
favorable, for ever lighter opemng
preempts. That can f ead to some
strange results, as this deal from a
team match illustrates.
To preempt at the three-level on a
bad SIX·card suit With all the high
cards on the side is bizarre, to say the
least. We would not think of any
action other than pass with the East
~and. South fell that the hQldfog mer·
lled more than just three spades,
which m11ht sounJ to pattner as
merely 1 cornpet1livc effort, so
jumped to four spades. NOC'th cannot
be (aulted for moving toward slam,
but South wu not interested
West Jed a club and declarer cap-
tured East's kina with the ~e. TilO
bidding and the opening ledd made it
clear that West held no hearts, so
declarer was not tempted to try to get
to dummy for the spade finesse.
Instead, declarer h1id down the ace of
spades, with &ratifying results.
Trumps were drawn. three clubs were
discorded on the ace of diamonds and
two good hc3ns, and declarer took: all the tricks . .
At the other table, Ea.st saw no rea-
son to open the bidding, and North·
South ended in a quiet four spades.
Again the lead was a club to the king
and ace. Declarer, mesmerized by the
lure of an ovcrtri'k or two, tried to
cross to dummy with a heart to take
the trump finesse. West ruffed,
cashed the queen of clubs and gave
~a 'club naff, then ruffed anodl-
cr hean for down one.
Five spades making seven at one
table, four spades down one at the
