place that will take the dogs.•
For Natasha Kidman, the biggest
thing on her. mind besides hN· 15lh

It's particuldfly hard for her to tlunk
about losing Muffin, because fihC' has

it will be equally difficult to say goodbye

Byhower has her hands full this
season running the Mail Room and
Gift Wrap Center at Pash.ion Island
in Newport Beach.
nus time of year, her busllless
tliples as people hurry to get their
gifts wrapped and mailed off to
loved ones across the country and
around the world.
The last few days before Christ-
mas are crunch time for Byhower
and her employees, as a steady
stream of customers have flowed
into her two stores.
•A lot of them are really
stressed,• Byhower said.
If history repeats itSelf, today
will be the worst day of all.
Last year, some customera dictn:t
even have time to wait for Byhow-
er's employees to wrap the pre-
sents, choosing instead to plop
down in the middle of the store dfld
ldckle the task themselves.
H People last year were handmg
me cash and saying, 'Give me the
supplies, I'll do it right here,··
Byhower said.
lliE LAST MINUTE
The business has taught
Byhower about procrastinabon.
Seeing what waiting until the
last minute does to other people
and having been in the same posi-
tion herself, she now gets all her
Chnstmas shoppIDg done by Hal-
loween.
She also trains seasonal employ-
ees by having them wrap her per-
sonal gifts as practice.
AJthough many people wait
until the last minute because they
can, it usually only takes one llrne
of having to pay hefty next-day
delivery fees to teach them a les-
son, Byhower said.
Prices vary according to size;
p.m. at the center, 151 Kalmus
Drive, Costa Mesa. Danang to all
kinds of music will follow until 11
p.m Admission is $8. For more

of chocolate -more than the price
of the gift itself.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS
The floor at the Mail Room is
covered With crushed plasbc foam
•peanuts," shiny bits of colored
ribbon and paper.
At the Gift Wrap Center, sassors '
fly, bows are shaped and paper is ·
folded and taped.
Byhower's team of 10 employ-
ees wrap package after package, ·
sometimes for an entire family. For ·
the gift wrappers, it's sore thumbs, •
dry hands, hd.flgnails and paper
cuts galore.
But working at Christmas cen-'
trtil makes it easy to keep spinl'i •
high and have fun in the process '
Byhower said she does every-
thing she can to accommodate cus-
tomers' special requests.
For example, she's been known
to add a six •pack of Coke or a
handful of candy to a box to tbrow
off the reapient of the gift. Other
times, customers have asked her to
put small packages within huge
boxes or the more-common ,
putting-a-~x-within-a-box-with-,
irl~a-box trick.
Gift-wrapping requests aren't
the only unusual things Byhower
sees ID the business. Some pre-,
sent:s, such as pajamas and robes, .
are standard -others just stand '
out.
She has wrapped everything •
from mink coats, chandeliers and '
diamond earrings to a steer's head ·
and a 5-foot-long ports rind.

As for individual perfor-
mances. it would be difficult, if
not impossible, to top the ham-
mer-and-tongs one-upsmanshtp
of Alastair Duncan and Lynn~a
Ferguson in "Private Llves." Only
one performance came close -
Lynsey McLeod's in "Oleanna.• •
· Honorable mention in the dct-

The best was the two·woman

FAN Cl Preservative -Free Skin Care
How much time and effort do you put Into .caring for. your skin? Chances are you are llke most women, spending more time covering up the damage
left from years of make-up rather than concentrating on Improving your complexion with proper skin care. In recent years It has become clear that
make-up damages our skin by clogging pores and draining the natural moisture from skin. But unfortunately, women continue to neglect taking _care
of their skin by continuing to focus excessively on make-up. Many ~omen forget the necessity and Importance of proper skin care. Fortunately,
FANCL Is here to remind us what proper skin care Is all about.
Q :WHAT IS PROPER SKIN CARE?
A :Proper <iktn care. cleanser. loner and moisturizer.
eradicates dirt and make-up from pores and uneven sur-
faces of the skin. It deep cleans and leaves the skin feel-
ing healthy and refreshed.
Proper skin care helps replenish moisture back to the
skin. Because our skin loses its moisture retenuon as we
age, proper skin care can assist the i.kin's natural moi!'.·
turizing process.
Q :WHY IS PROPER SKIN CARE IMPORTANT?
A : A proper sJ..:in care regimen 1s essential in protecting
the skm from harmful ingredients found in common
make-up products. With the noticeable benefit that prop-
er skin care provides, isn't tt 1ime to start taking better
care of our skin!
Q :WHE IS PROPER SKIN CARE IMPORTANT?
A: Al\\ays! For example, at night before going to bed,
women conlinue to use popular skin care produc~ which
con tam unnecessary preservatives and additives. such-as
perfumes and color agents. Hannful ingredients arc
found m nearly every skin care product on the market.
In the morning, as at night, for a clean, fresh and healthy
face proper: skin care is desirable lo achieve optimal per-
fom1ance from your make-up.
Q : HOW DO I GET THE MOST OUT OF MY

P.Jul.i Begoun, author of
'The Beauty Bible'
A : The only way to obtain the best from your make-up
is to uc;e pure and natural skin care products without any
harmful ingredients. In the pa t, this rype of skin care
product has been impossible to tind ... unt1l now!
Q : WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO PROPER SKIN ·
CARE?
A : FANCL. The compleie preservative anJ additive free
skin care system. rANCL skin care products redefine .
what proper skin care is all about.
Q : WHY IS Jf IMPORTANT N01 TO HA VE
ADDITIVES AND PRESERVATIVES IN SKI N
CARE PRODUCTS?
A : Mo 1 skin care products on the market today arc
large in size and filled with hannful additive and
preservauves. Like food. kin care products cont.am
many nacural ingredien~. But, what mo"t people don't
know i that like food, kin care products also contain
harmful dditive and preservative to maintain fresh -
ness. The bigger the bottle, the more addittves~d ·
preservatives needed, Although preservatives and addi-
tives do help prevent a product's spoilage and increase
shelf life, in the long run they can be seriously damaging
to your kin.
Q :HOW DOES FANCL ELIMINATE HARMFUL
lNGREDIE:.NTS'?
A:fANCL believes in the delicate and gentle care for
your skm. They completely ehmmate preservatives and
additives such as antiseptics, disinfectants, petroleum
surfactants. fragrance, coloring agents and mmeral oil.
In return. they have made sure that ONLY the best
ingredients are left inside the tiny bottle; fresh and
unspoiled .
Q :WHY IS TitE FANCl R01~n..E SO SMALL?
A: Unlike the larger skin care product bottles on the
market, FANCL uses a tiny bonle. The larger the bottle,
the more preservatives and additivec; required to keep it
fre h. Since the e ingredients 8JC prlJ\ic11 harmful to skin,
F ANCL uses a tiny bottle that only contains what is nec-
essary for healthy kin.

The victory
improved the Eagles
to 5-6 and helped
them feel a l.Jttle bet-

after their worst start

The Eagles, in fact,
missed their first six
field-goal tries and
finished just 2 of 15

the Oilers ( 1-9) to
open a 9-6 lead.

ing a 9-2 deficit into a 23-12 lead.
The Eagles outscored the
hosts, 31-13 in the second period
and Huntington never got closer
than nine points the rest of the
way.
Estancia connected on 14 of 25
field-goal attempts after intermis-
sion (56%) and also prospered at
the foul line to put away the
scrappy Oilers.
"We made some silly mistakes
in the third quarter and, credit
Huntington, they played hard,"
Boyce said. "But, unlike recent
games, I thought we steadied our-
selves. I think the heady plays
outnumbered the bonehead plays
tonight, which 1s a good sign."
Estancia sank 25 ot 37 foul

Packed in the upper rows of the

With the number of video
cameras flashirig red lights, it
looked like Christmas morning ·

Appropriately, there was ·a
special giveaway ~ge from
both schools in Wednesday
night's nonleague game, won by
Coach Bret Aem.mg's Artists, -43-

•I've seen you guys play

Cd.M Coach Paul Orris, "and

I've seen you guys play this sea-

was as bad as I've seen us play.•
Oms, whose team fell to 8-3
and couldn't buy a bucket in the
game's last 4:39, couldn't have
agreed more.
Laguna Beach erased a 10-
point deficit in the third quarter,
tied the game twice early in the
fourth, then watched Cd.M go
scoreless the rest of the wa.y
after seruor center Justin Shea
gave the Sea Kings a 37-35 edge
with 4 :39 still to play.
"It's disappointing, because
we've gotten hammered by
Laguna Beach the last two years
(when the Sea Kings struggled
overall),• Orris said. ·we really
wanted thl:s one."
In a classic tale of two halves,
CdM won the first one a.s guard
Alec Hanson (team-high 12
points) hit two three-pointers
and Shea ended up with five
rebounds (four offensive).
Shea, who finished with 10
boards (six offensive), complet·
ed a layup with lots of time
remainmg when senior team-
mate Denru:s Alshuler fed,.lllm
with d sweet dish undemeal\.
But no one on the Ooor, and
probably none of the swveyon
m the audience, wOukrw ~
med that CdM would miss :ill
final 11 shots.
There were 10 lead changes
in the game. It was tied twice in
the fourth quarter.
' In a crucial series following a
CdM timeout with 0:44 left and
'Laguna Beach leading, 39-37,
the Sea Kings wasted little time
upon inbounding the ball,· as
senior guard Brandon Crosby
misfired on a three-point try.
"We thought we had an
opportunity to get something,"
Orris said. "ln hindsight, maybe
we should have taken more
(time off the clock). But that was
the shot and it was the look we
wanted. Things just didn't go in
for us." ·
· The Artists rebounded and
were quickly fouled. Laguna
Beach's Jesse Obrand sank two
from the line for a 41-37 lead
with 0:30 to play.
In the closing seconds, CdM
missed three more attempts
from beyond the arch. then Mor-
gan Reynolds (seven rebounds)
made two free throws with
0:00.7 on the clock for Laguna
Beach's margm of victory.
• ('lbe Artists) executed down

said. "l agree with (Fleming) ... 1t
wasn't our best effort and it was-
n't theirs, either. There JUSt was-
n't any flow to the game."
CdM, also led by Alshuler's
six rebounds, four steals, one
assist and one blocked shot, was
6 of 27 from the field in the sec-
ond half (22%), but the Sea
Kings weren't much better in the
first (8 of 29).
Lagtina Beach was 6 of 9 from
the floor in the third quarter u it
staged a comeback, deleting a
25-15 deficit. The ArtislCJ
outscored the Sea Kings in the
third, 15""6, and took their first
lead, 26-25, since going up, 4·2.
Crosby tipped one in for a 27-
26 CdM lead, then scored on a
throw-in shot with 2:16 to play in
the third, giving his team a 29-
28 edge.
Cd.M broke out strong eany

a pair of tourney victories.
HAWAllAN GARDENS -For
two days, Newport Harbor High's
basketball team was without the
services of forward April Ross
and the offense noticedbly suf-
fered.
With Ross making her first
appearance stnce Friday, the
Sailors rumbled to a pair of con-
vincing wins to close out the
Artesia Christmas Classic
Wednesday at the Hawaiian Gar-
dens Community-Center.
"It makes all the difference m
the world,• Coach Gregg Savage
said. "Today we finally got close
to the way we were playing at the
Umversity Tournament. We shot
better and executed well We did
what we needed to do."
In the first game, Ross scored
15 points m a 46-28 win over
Warren. Eight of those point.
came in the first quarter and the
Sailors, with an assist from a tlght
defense, lead 11-1 after one quar-
ter.
Ross rested for a quarter but
added seven more in the third as
Newport Harbor, wtuch has won
three straight to improve to 8-4,
put the contest out of reach.
"I told them it was time to get
dggressivewnd if we ctid, we'd
get a lot of steals," Savage said.
"It really showed tonight."
The steals and improved
rebounding led to a number of
transition shots, whlch gave the
Sallors a deosive advantage m
the 25th-place game, a 59-18
blowout of Santa Fe
Ross led the first quarter attack
with 10 pomts, eight of which
came on fast breaks. "She runs

ge ts the offense gomg: Savage
Sclld. "It lets us open up the rest of
the offense and run our plays.·
Ross sat early m the !>econd
quarter to rest and the offense
dipped a little, but the defense
damped down and gave up just
two points, preserving a 26-1 O
cushion at halftime.
Ross ctid not return because
Savage wanted the opporturuty
to work on U1e off eru.e with other
players. The Sailors responded
well.
Kristen Urban scored 12 of her
14 points in the second half. Kale-
na Jackson scored· 13 points and
the rest of the scoring was spread
out fairly evenly.

Big Canyon headed for television event
thanks to Schriber's playoff wedge shot.
W:th the playoff press_ure
on; and television
exposure coming in the
next round, Selby Schriber
calmly shot Big Canyon
Country Club onto tape-
delayed cable.
In a four-team playoff for two
spots in the upcoming
match-play portion ol the 1999
Subaru Team Championships,
Big Canyon advanced out of a
unique playoff Dec. 14 at
Hacienda Country Club.
The format of the event
involves a club pro selecting
a male and female amateur
from their respective clubs
to' assemble a three-person
team.
The playoff m the Subaru
qualifier at Hacienda consisted
of wedge shots, with the ladies
bitting from 80 yards out and
the pros and male amateurs
stroking from 100 yards away
Closest to the pin, wins.
Schriber, the women's club
champion at Big Canyon ever:y
year since 1992 (there was no
event this year), lofted her
wedge shot four feet from the
cup to secure Big Canyon's
place. in the 16-team,
made-for-television event
(on Fox) for the third year in e
row.
Thirty teams played a
one-round qualifier, with Big
Canyon, led by assistant pro
Kelly Manos and six-time men's
club champion Alan Otobka,
shooting 4-under 67 to finish
tied !or the last qualifying spot.
Mj.ssion Viejo Country Club,
ironically, which elimirutted Big
Canyon last year from match
play, was the other club to
qualify out ot the playoff.
Leave it to Schriber, the 1997
Tea Cup Classic champion in
the Fletcher Jonet0
Motorcars/Daily Pilot Club
Championship Series, to come
up with a. big wedge shot.
-+-
Big Canyon wW begin match
play in the. Subaru Team
Championship in Marcil. The
date and opponent is undeter-
mined, Manos said. The format
includes a best-ball score from
each team for the first eight
boles, then the two best balls
on the runth hole.
-+-
Big Canyon, wbJch reopened
Nov. 5 following reconstruction
on the golf course, is much
tougher than before, Manos
sald.
·It's difficult,• Manos said.
•When they cut the greens, it
gets really fast. The greens are
so true. There's no question (it's
a tougher course to play). It's
totally different. It doesn't even
compare. The tee shots are
pretty much the same, except
for the par-3s, but the most
demanding shots are the
approach shots.•
