his mother, Robyn Bartel.
Russell didn't show any interest in ddJlc·

The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago never con·

The gift of patience is hard to c.ome . by during holidays
I t's every rruschievous kid's
dream -to fmd out where
your parents hid·your Christ-
mas presents before operung
them on the long-aw<llted Chnst-

. But for my brother, Elie, dnd I,
it became an obsc>ssion.
It all started m th£' Christmas
of 1986. I was 11 yedrs old and
· Enc was 9, We somehow gol the
idea in our hedds to search out
our Pdrents' hldmg places for an
early peek at Christ.mas goodies
-probdbly from one of our bad-

\Vhen our pMents would leave
the house together, we would
edgerly snoop around Uie bed-
room, the garage dnd -.!. of

Our first ~ntuies into this
dangerous world were caught
unmediately by our mot.her, who
was not easily fooled.
That's when thiny got trick~··
First, mom tncd putting a
bowl filled with water near the
bedroom door, so if we opened 1t,
the water would soak the carpet
and they would know we tned to
sneak in. She al o tned putting
tape on the top of the door. II the
tape was gone when she got
home, she would know.
But Eric and I wero also not
easily fooled. We dciually man-
aged to overcome her booby-
traps and found out what we
were getting. For me 1t Wd!> a
phone, Jeans and a Benetton
sweater. For Enc, Nintendo.
Every year, our parents tned
to keep the unwrapped gifts
more and more secure. The fol-
lowing ~·ear, the}' lock€d them m

The next year was our biggest

But we made one tatul mis-
take. Enc opened what was ctn

do such a good 1ob re-wrapping
it. Our parents hgured 1t out,
caught us red-handed, tmd told

I had wnttcn my usual long
list to Santa Claus asking for
what I most wanted that year. At
U1c top of my list was a doll that I
hdd probably seen on 1V com-
mercials millions of tunes. I don't
remember the name of the doll
or whether she was the kind that
giggled or wet her diaper, but I
1ust remember I Wdnted it wnlly,
really bad.
Christmas morning came dnd
I ran to the living room to seP
what Santa had delivered. There
wern puzzles and stuffed anuniils
and an outfit for Barbie, but no
doll. In.stead. lymg next to the
glass of milk I had left out the
rught before, was a handwritten
note covered with cookie
crwnbs.
It was a letter from Santa
Claus, explammg that all.hough I
had been a very good girl, he
wasn't able to bnng me the doll I
had a ked for. He promised he
would get it for me next year. He
thanked me for the cookies and
milk, and said he hoped I liked
the toys he did give me.
NeedlPss to say, a handwritten
letter from Santa Claus meant a
lot more to tnC' than a crummy
doll. Even my stste1 WdS Jt!aluus.
,.

Through 1959, our mother,
Nina, worked multiple jobs to
meet the $98 monlh.ly rent and
weekly grocery bills. My older
sister, Kathy, was starting to have
frequent blackouts and epileptic
seizures, which meant escalating
doctor bills.
Even with help rrom her Sis-
ters dnd brothe1s, my mom and
our brqad were nearly destitute.
I saved thcit letter for several
yoars. When' I was starting to
grow more and more suspicious
about Santa Cldus' existence, I
brought out the letter and re·
examined the handwriting. I
knew it was my mother's.
Instead of feeling sad that I
had figured out the secret, 1 WdS
g~atefuJ to my parents for trymg
so ha.id to keep it. I think now
that this was their wa~ ot keep·
mg me a little girl -of shelter-
ing me from the sometuncs harsh
realities of a grown-up's world
tor as long as they could.
I asked my mot.her the other
day if she remembered wnllng
the letter. She did.
·well. you know we used to
do things for you guys," she told
me. "We couldn't afford the doll,
but we ctidn t Wdnt you to be dis-
appomted m Santa Claus.•
She went on to say how now
1t was my tum to do things for
my 15-month-old daughter.
So Twill.
Although she's still a little loo
young to understand who Santa
Claus is, I want her to know
about him as soon as possible. So
on Christmas Eve, my husband
and I filled her stocking and put
her gilts under tbe tree while she
was sleeping. And today we will
ooh and dab with her over what
Santa brought her.
Years from now, if she ever
comes to me and asks me the
question I know all parents
dread, I will tell her the truth.
Until then, I want to keep her
a little girl for as long as I can.
