side of Black's vehicle, Johnson

Theres never a dull moment for East Side mail carriers who make
deliveries t;o boxes that resemble everything from dogs t;o sharks
W hen letter carrier Ron
Maxwell first discovered
the brown dog-shaped
mailbox on his route, be didn't
expect to hear barking. But when
two large Labrador retrievers, which
resembled the mailbox, suddenly
came pouncing down the driveway
toward him, be was terrified.
•Any house that has a mailbox
shaped like a dog, I know there's a
dog there, and I go on the alert,~
Maxwell said, noting he's been
chased, but never bitten.

Maxwell, 44, isn't shy about his
fear of dogs, but he prefers the curb-

ally pop up on his route.
"It's kind of weird because you
pull it down (the opening) by the
nose," Maxwell said.
Dan Whipple, who supervises let-
ter carriers at the downtown post
office, said the unusual mailboxes
are usually found on routes where
there is curbside delivery. He said
some routes are coveted by carriers
and assigned according to their
seniority.

Silva fights
"boundary
changes
• Costa Mesa and Newport Beach wotlld
remain in present districts, but county
supervisor says other changes would be
costly and unnecessary.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
County Supervisor Jim Silva is speaking out
against a proposal to redraw the boundaries of super-
visors' districts -a change that would have only rip·
ple effects on Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
The Board of Supervisors can change the bound-
aries with a simple vote -and Supervisor Don
Saltarelli of the 3rd District is asking bis colleagues to
do just that. His staff reconfigured the boundary map
to group cities with more common interests, be said.
But Silva doesn't
think the proposal
would serve residents'
interests.
•The voters would
be misserved by a
change without ade-
quate public hear-
ings,~ he said.
Saltarelli plans no
public hearings on the
issue, but the board
welcomes public corn·
ments during their
meetings. The board
will discuss the pro-
posal at its Tuesday
meeting.

Neither Saltarelli nor Silva foresaw any major
shake-ups foi Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, which
the plan would keep in the two districts they now
occupy. But both cities would feel the effects of their
districts losing cities with certain interests and gain-
ing cities with other interests.
Costa Mesa's 2nd District would lose Stanton and
Garden Grove and gain Fountain Valley. The 5th Dis-
trict, encompassing Newport Beach, would lose Irvine
and gain all of South County. That puts Newport

There's music -and merit -in the air at our schools
ESTANOA HIGH SCHOOL
Estancia student Melllla
Inouye qualified as a National
Merit semi-finalist aftm-taking
the PSAT last October. Out of
the 110,000 students who 'took
the test, only 20 students scored
higher than her 227 points in
the state of California. The
results for the finalists will
arrive in March of 1997.
Inouye also ran a personal
best, 18:42, on University High
School's cross country course.
The varsity girls' team has been
ranked fifth in Diruion fV, four
places higher than they were
originally ranked. The boys'
team has also moved from last
place to third, a remarkable
accomplishment.
On a more academic note,
Estancia has moved up in the
world of technology. An IBM
computer lab was given to the
Regional Occupation Program
Department. The 30 new PC
System Design Pentium 100s
that cost a total of $50,000, were
paid for by the Estancia Special
Fund and the Newport-Mesa
ROP program. Another addition
is the SAT program that is now
available to students in the
MAC lab.
Estancia drama, nbw under
new faculty member Pauline
Maranlan's leadership, did well
at the Drama Teachers Associa·
tion of Southern California com-
petition. Jason Orellano and
Part Baker placed fourth in the
serious group, performing •Tue
Wool Gatherer.• Honorable
Mention in the Group Humor-
ous category was awarded to
Katie Stapleton. Richie Rugge-
rio and Dana Cassity for their
performance in •Pizza Man.•

City goes with flow in groundwater plan
NEWPORT BEACH -The
City Council's approval of six
contracts Tuesday paved the way
for the last phases of a project to
tap into Fountain Valley's
groundwater supply.
Council members questioned
the need to add an extra 10%
onto the contracts' budgets in
case something goes wrong.
"The contingency is an attrac-
tive pot of money for contractors
to take advantage of,~ Mayor
John Hedges said .
But in the end, they decided
they had to approve the contracts
and the contingencies to keep
the 4-year-old project from
stalling further. The $23.7 million
project was originally expected
to cost $18 million and to be com-
pleted by May 1996. .
·w e can beat it to oeath, H City
Manager Kevin Murphy said,
•but the bottom line is we're
nearing completion."
The council's OK means con-
struction can begin on two pipes
at a total cost of almost $2.4 mil·
lion. Tuesday's action also
approved agreements with pri-
vate companies that provide con-
struction management, planning
and engineering services for
$291,340 total.
The project, expected to pay
off in lower water bills, involves
building four wells, a 3 million-
gallon reservoir and a pump sta-
tion. The pipes should be in place
by July, staff reports said.

"It cheers me tip, it's some-

An Orange-based company

styles of mailboxes offers special-
ty boxes from trains to dolphins
that sell for $69.95. But the high
end designer boxes can cost as

Robert Henderson is the man

From the shop he set up in his

19,000-student distri~t is still
recovering, came just three years
later when the district's trusted
school budget director pleaded
guilty to embezzling millions of
district cf ollars.
Angry parents, faced with cuts
to their children's educational
programs, threatened recalls.
Then, two months later, de
Boom suffered another setback
when anq.t.ber angry parent
demanded be resign his board
presidency after just one week as
the ceremonial leader. The New-
port Beach mother threatened to
publicly expose financial prob-
lems with the local YMCA which
prompted the organization's
board in 1988 to request de

Though: de Boom denied any
wrongdoing, he relinquished the
post in order to save the district

run from a good fight,' to which I
said, 'I'm not running from a

De Boom did fight back, and
last December was elected presi-
dent again by the board, this time
with no public objections.
•To be a good board member,

Though de Boom .is stepping
down from his first elected office
to pursue other dvic activiUes, he
won't rule out a future bid for

Star Class sailors up in arms

•Warriors' staff takes issue with Harbor's constant
passing, but Newport coach cites the blitzing tactics,
which left him with little choice in runaway victory.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -Peihaps fermenting
in a Sea View League losing
streak which visiting Newport
Harbor High extended to three
years and 15 games Thursday
night. some young Woodbridge
assistant football coaches spewed
a little sour grapes at Sailor Coach
Jeff Brinkley, following Harbor's
50-7 romp at Irvine High.

MISSION VIEJO -While
Corona del Mar High's football
team set new standards for pass-
ing Thursday night, it al5o found
innovative ways to play defense. ·rm almost positive you've got
to tackle them to stop them, I've
got to look that up.• CdM coach
Dick Freeman said after his
team's sea.son-finale setback to
host Santa Margarita, 55-27, in
Sea View League action at Sad-
dleback College.
The Eagles, ranked fifth in
Orange County and second in
CIP Southern Section Division V,
scored six touchdowns in six first-
half possessions, and never once
had a drive of more than five
plays.
Their defense contributed a
58-yard interception return for a
touchdown, to give them a 48-14
halftime lead, a Santa Margarita
school record for most points in a
half.
·we've struggled against
CQrona del Mar the last four
years so it's nice to be able to wm
this and go 5-0 in the Sea View
League,• Santa Margarita Coach
Jim Hartigan said. •tt feels good
to beat Corona del Mar because
they've had our number. Hope-
fully, this will even it up.•
Corona del Mar had defeated
Santa Margarita three straight
years, including last year's 18-17
win when the Eagles missed a
19-yard field-goal attempt with
no time left in the game.
•we missed a field goal to pos-
sibly tie for the Sea View League
championship," said Hartigan,
whose squad (9-1 overall) had
possession for only 6:30 in the
tint half.
year-old second-year defensive
line coach Erik Lekas triggered
Brinkley's ire in the aftermath.
"If they would have gone to a
base defense and stopped blitz-
ing, we would have run the ball,"
explained Brinkley, who called
four passes on the Sailors' final
touchdown drive, which culmi-
nated with a 16-yard Terence
Felix run with nine seconds left.
"They were still coming after
us, so I decided to throw the ball,
so our running backs wouldn't get
their butt kicked, with their
defensive guys going against our
junior varsity line."

Brinkley, who answered Lekas'
shouted criticism by telling the
young assistant to •get a head
(coaching) job and come and play
me sometime," was angered
more by what h e said were
threats to withhold votes for Har-
bor players at the upcoming all-
league meeting.
"It was three or four coaches,"
~rlnkley said of the Woodbridge
sta.ff1s postgame beefing.
It was not known if head coach
Rick Gibson was among the vocal
protesters. He quickly left ilie

btl senior year as a veteran
guard and tackle, all under the
late Ralph K. Reed. first c.oach
and albletic director.
Always the modest one,
Ralph will shy away from
laudable words, but it WU his
brother, Al. who once named
him to an all-Newport team
from the '30s upon a
sportswriter'& request in 1955.
Al had played with most all of
them, Including bis brother.
One ot Reed's best grid
teams went 6-2-1in1931 and it
abut out five opponents. Had
the Saflon beaten~ the
chlmpkmlhip would have gone
to Newport. The three top 'Jars
were All-Sunset Leaguers
George Thompson,
quarterback: Rollo McClellan,
fullback1 and center George

D ick Spaulding, the '31

Reed. the school's first grid
c:bief, u •a real coach who
knew bow to handle kid.I.• As
tbe years came to pass, Ralph
would observe brother Al ixl the
same light.
He said Reed's philosophy
was pretty simple. He'd tell the
players, •every play should be a
touchdown if everyone does the
right thing.• Reed's teams
favedd running, but the coach
also bad a fondness for the
razzle-dazzle plays.
Ralph always admired
brother Al's football coacbing
and swimming, but still holds
highest praise for him in bis
work with Newport lifeguards
over the years.
He said the famed Coach
Stagg was •a big influence in

Ralph said, "I met Stagg

Out of amusement, Ralph

theater on 22nd Street in
Newport. 'Ibey would provide
Al with a dime for a ticket.
After entering, Al would slip
under the long row of seats to
open the back door, which
allowed space for the others to
enter, quietly.
They loved Westerns. Ralph
still remembers "Cowboys• like
Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson and Ken
Maynard. Madam Marue was
one of the early day theater

l_J'e also recalled the teen

mother, the late Sadie Irwin.
She might fret over her boys
getting ihto trouble as kids on
the beach, but not in sports.
•She never missed a game,•
Ralph said. She passed away in
1963.
Ralph was not into
swimming because •the beach
gave me skin problems." One
of bis Mdy day money-makers,
he mused, was digging razor
dams for filbennen. "It was
good money," he said with a
laugh.
In time, he linked up with
the Coast Gua?Q and became a
fOlld fixture in lighthouses up
and down the Coast during
World War U. He was a motor
machinist.
He was involved with
numerous things dwing the
bulk of bis life, but he, in
essence, was a contractor. He
drove a Harbor High school bus
once and recalled one could not
drive past 35 miles an hpur.
He also recalled the
Japanese-American students at
Harbor High before WWll
disrupted life and found them
being ordered to internment
camps, despite the innocence.
Ralph, looking back, said,
"They were excellent
students. They were never a
problem. They did well in
.sports, including the girls."
He feels blessed and happy
for marriage and family. He
manied Dolores, Class of '37, '
and their 57th anniversary will
arrive this December. Their two
children are daughter Robin,
who went to OCC, and son
MicbAel, who went on to coach
water polo and swimming at
UC Santa Barbara. He is now
retired from coaching.
Ralph, once a commander of
the Costa Mesa American
Legion, built a fine hobby
going back to 1959 of carving
wooden birds. Dolores would
paint them. People came to
admire them and one day
brother Al and his wife Lois
chose to follow the bobby with
great interest.
Asked about his view of
Newport today, he replied,
"We're hampered now. That
didn't hold in the old days.
There was breathing room."
He misses that, and
understandably so.

Star class from the 2000

sailing community.

US Sailing's two delegates to
ISAF, Tom Ehman and Andy
Kostecki, have been receiving a
rash of e-mails from concerned
sailors, including former Star
gold medalist Mark Reynolds.
Now as aailon around the
world begin to acclimate to the
new slate of Olympic boats, the
question remains: What will
happen to the sport of sailing
over the next quadrennium?
While the top American

This is a question that will be
answered as Olympic-caliber
sailors test out the 49er. As it is
so new, the ideal crew weight
and other important factors have
not yet been determined. After
sailing the 49er, it's likely many
sailors will return to their former
classes.
Though the class selection for
the 2000 Olympics has brought
the most attention, there were a
number of other issues discussed
at the ISAF meeting which will
change the face of competitive
sailing.
The 1996 Experimental Rules
will be adopted as the new
racing rules, taking effect
internationally Aprll 1. Most
yacht clubs currently use these
rules as they were anticipated to
be accepted by the ISAF.

ranking list which in turn will
qualify 12 countries for berths to
the 2000 Olympics. Once
qualified, these countries will be
able to hold their own trials to
select a team.
The boat most likely to be
used for women's match racing is
the J-22, although Solings
without hobbles and with small
spinnakers are also being
considered. In addition, there
will be a crew weight limit for
this class.
lrying to broaden the scope of
sailing in the Olympics, ISAF is
currently attempting to get ice
and/or snow sailing into the 2002
Winter Olympics.
Pertaining mainly to the Laser
class, camelbacks (the wearing
of drinking-water bottles) are no
longer accepted. Camelbacks are
now considered to be infringing
on the racing rules against
wearing clothing for the purpose
of increasing weight (new ISAF
case no. 170). ,
As for the actual Olympic site,
preparations are well
underway in Sydney. An
Olympic marina is being built in
Rushcutter's Bay, with the racing
to be held in Sydney Harbour for
the smaller boats and match
racing, and outside the Hea&
for the big boats. Courses similar
t'o those sailed in Savannah are
likely, with the possible addition
of a zig-zag, windward-leeward
course should the big boats need
to sail in the Harbour due to
extreme weather conditions.
Future international regatta

Viejo out of the net in the second
half of overtime.
"They had the la.st possession
and they can shoot at any time,
so I was nervous, especially at
the end,• Messenger said.
"Luckily our defense helped me
out."
CdM' slow-down tempo
worked to its advantage early as
Coach John Vargas' Sea Kings
used most of the 35-second shot
clock in their first five posses-
sions, two of which ended in
scores. The Sea Kings left 0:03,
0:04 and 0:03 on three of the
possession, and the entire clock
for two others.
"We want to control the tem-
po of the game," Vargas said.
"And, obviously, we're going to
try (and do that Tuesday_atter-
noon against Wilson)."
Mission Viejo scored five
straight goals to tie the game,
7-7.
"They chipped away ... and got
real excited and we got.emotion-
al, .. Vargas said. "Seering with
the ball we don't care about.
We're going to stop them on
defense."

Estancta High product Nick Novak. who joined the team last week,
appears to be the early beneficiary of the current upheaval.
"He's showing me that he's someone I should have reaulted all
along,• O'Brien said. •He has had a great week. He's a welcome addi-
tion. He's only been here a week and he has moved into the top eight.•
Other reauits expected to be on the roster haven't panned out
between injuries, academic problems and personal problems.
The bulk of the leadership load will fall to Duane Curtis, an all-
Orange Empire Conference selection, and Corona del Mar High prod-
uct Brian Fracalosy. At least until Oown1 and Reyes return.
O'Brien still plans to go with a three-guard offense of Duane Curtis,
Fracalosy and Reyes (when possible). Curtis and Reyes were high
school teammates at Pasadena Muir.
Curtis averaged 15 points a game last season, hit on 42 % of his
three-point shots and connected on 78% of his attempts from the foul
line. Reyes chipped in 11.4 points with a team-high 4.3 assis1s a game.
Fracalosy started early in the season when Reyes was injured, fin-
ishing with an average of 1.4 points a game.
Downs, a 6-6, 225-pound forward Will be expected to pound the
boards for the Pirates. He averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds last
season and comes in 15 pounds heavier.
The Pirates might go with 6-2 Matt Haven in the middle of their
zone. He plays with only one hand. A transfer from Western State Uni-
versity in Colorado, Haven had part of his right arm amputated as a
child due to a life-threatening d.rculatoly problem.
• •Matt is someone you want to bring your son or daughter to see,•
: O'Brien said. "It's a tough sport for him to play and to be as competi-
: tive and fluid and good as he is. He's a good defensive player, one of
: our defensive stoppers."

COSTA MESA -Mike Thornton, the

translates into a 150-79 record. OCCis coming off a 23-11 seuoii and
a semifinal appearance in the Southern California Regionals.
The Pirates have been tabbed to finish fourth in the Orange Empire
Conference with Irvine Valley, coached by former Costa Mesa High
Coach Usa McNamee, getting a tepid nod for first.
State and conference champion Saddleback College would have
been the choice, but the Gauchos were forced to fold up their ten.ti for
a season when the coaching staff took the job at Rancho Santiago and
took everyone else with them. including returnees and reautts.
The Rancho Santiago program, however, remains unclear and the
Dons are picked for fifth place by the sports information dlrecton.
Perennial power Golden West would normally be another IOlid
pick, but the Rustlers have already canceled their preseuon schedule
and are tn jeopardy of. not fielding a team for the conference go-round.

game, will really be taking to the blocks with three, and at time1, four
