Your article in Monday's
Pilot reminded me th t ow
City Council chose the straight
reactive mode to solvP loitering
on street comers at L10n's Park
("City staff to recommend
keeping job·center," Dec. 14).
The decision to tum this prob-
lem over to tbe police showed
little irndgina~on or, for that
matter, a failwe to take a •
proactive.stance. The Job Cen-
ter was long in coming, but it
certainly was a good decision.
With so many people idle in
the streets, I felt this was a sit-
uation that could be tackled by
one of our community colleges.
The Neighborhood CommWli-

place for locating classroom

Snubbing Leece for
post a bad decision
Just when I thought New-
port-Mesa Unified School Dis-
trict was gettmg back on track
Whatever are those people
on the chool board thinking?
In not allowirig Wendy Leece
the board position, which
would nonnally be hett, they
sent a powerlul message say-
ing her ideas~and conoems for
our children's education are
not wE'lcomeft>ecause they dif-
fer Wllh their own. They
appcirenUy have taken Oaily
Pilot columnist Joseph Bell far
too seriously.
;)ctually, Leece's sugges-
tion:; dfe qwte sound .
Far from radical, they are
ones that were practiced
through centuries of American
history and benefited genera-
tions of children. Unfortunate-
ly, those tried-and-true pro-
grams were abandoned and
replaced with expenmental
. ideas, most of which are prov-
ing to be dismal failures.
Doubters only need to com-
pdl'e test scores, check with
college admission personnel or
ask business owners to learn
thul our school system is not
producing the expected
results, either in education or
character.
U the present board's
response to Leece's sugges-
tions conbnue to reflect closed
minds governed by stereotype
thinking, perhaps those people
need to be replaced How else
will our schools be returned to
the high level they once
