Post-election tensiops ran
high in the Newport Beach
City Council chambers last
week.
Re-elected Councilwoman
Jan Debay and Mayor John
Hedges, who endorsed
Debay's opponent, sparred
over hiring an engineering
consultant to prepare city
water system plans.
Hedges, a proponent of pri-
vatizing city services to lower
costs, questioned paying $52
per hour for word processing
as part of the deal.
The normally serene Debay
responded by saying, "If you
want privatization, you have to
pay the prices the private sec-
tor charges. We tell the staff to
privatize, then they do what
we tell them to do, and we
criticize them for it. It's nega-
tive and it's destructive -we're
driving the staff nuts."
Hedges didn't flinch.
"I'm attempting to do my
job as a representative of the
city," he said. "If that gets into
my colleague's comfort zone,
so be it."
And Debay, considered a
contender for the mayoral seat
when the council chooses its
leader next month, didn't back
down.
"We question these things
all week in committee meeting
when you're off somewhere
else," she Sllid, refenin.g to
Hedges' day job as an airline
pilot.
+ FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Planning to leave town for
Thanksgiving?
If your plans include John
Wayne Airport, chew on these
stats from last year's holiday
travel period:
• During the five-day
Thanksgiving period last year,
more than 95,000 people came
through the airport.
• More than 7, 100 cars
parked in the airport's Main
Street long-term lots during
that time.
•Nov. 22, 1995 -last year's
day before Thanksgiving -
was the most popular day for
travel, with 25,215 passengers
recorded. Nov. 24, the day
after Thanksgiving, was the
lightest day, with oi:i.ly 11,717
passengers traveling through
John Wayne.

HOW TIMES
HAVE CHANGED
Traditionalty, drivers have been
urged to grip the steering wheels of
their cars at the •ten• and "two"
positions, with the numbers refening
to the spots they occupy on the face
of a clock. However, one look at
today's steering wheels reveais that
this hand positioning is no longer
appropriate. Over the past 50 years
or so, the average height of the dri-
ver's seat has dropped fifteen to
nineteen inches, while the steering
wheel has been lowered twelve to
fourteen inches. The cutouts to
either side of the hub of the steering
wheel now indicate that the left
hand should be positioned between
7 and 9 o'clock, while the right hand
should be placed between 3 and 5.
This lowered positioning is easier on
the shoulders ar'ld helps reduce
fatigue. The revised grip also keeps
the hands away from the center of
the wheel so they will not be thrust
into the face by airbag deployment.

FLUSH WITH
POSSIBILITIES
As part of an automobile's r&gUW
maintenance, its cooling system
should be drained and flushed at
least every three years. Symptoms
that indicate the immediate need for
a system flush include a water/
antifreeze mixture in the radiator that
contains suspended particles, and a
heater that does not provide as
much heat as it should. If the fluid in
the radiator looks and feels filthy or
contains rust, the cooling should be
back-flushed without delay. This is
. not the same as simply draining the
radiator. Back-flushing requires that
the thermostat be removed and
replaced. And, while there n mallY
possible causes of reduction In
heater efficiency, one of them is the
acainulation of rust and 98diment
in the heater core. If the e111s coOling Wlltam .ha<t not been b-*-

Like so many other students
who live along the Newport
coast. Cameron ii a water baby.
Water polo. SWimming. Surf-
fug. U it involves water, he's
there.
•1 playe& goalie a couple of
years ago," says Cameron, 14,
whd plays for the Sailors'
frosh/soph water p~lo team'.
"There's two goalies now, but
one is not allowed to be on the
team next year. I'm going .to be
one of the goalies."
After two months of navigat-
ing the 75-year-old hallways of
Newport Harbor High, Cameron
says. he has adjusted well to his
new surroundings, and all that
stuff about seniors tossing unsus-
pecting freshmen into vacant
lockers is as realistic as a camp-
fire story.
•Everyone says,'Oh, the
seniors are so mean. They make
you do everything,' but they
don't,• said Cameron. "It's really
the sophomores. Most sopho-
mores get way bossier to the
freshmen because they're not
freshmen anymore. But the
seniors are OK."
Even the homework isn't as
bad in high school as the treach-

School rumor mill made it sound.
•A lot of the teachers last year
said there wo'1ld be a lot more
homework once we got into high
school. but I think it's ~bout the same: ~eron said. •it's hard-
er, but it's the same amount of
time -not more.•
Everything else about high
school is better, Cameron said,
especially the many clubs on
campus.
Already a member of the
International Ambassadors Club
and the .speech and debate team
(•1 really like to argue," he said),
Cameron continues to look e>ver
his alternatives.
You see, these things take
time, according to Cameron.
Came,ron does have one
advantage many other freshmen
don't starting out at a new school
-a mother on cainpus.
Cameron's mom, Robin, is a
career si)eciaJist for the school as
part of the Coastline Regional
Occupational Program. And
while having a mom looking over
your shoulder all day might not
be an attractive situation for
many students, Cameron says it's
not that bad. •
"It's actually nice,• he said. •u
I need lunch money, I come and
get it from her. If I get sick, I can
reach her.•
And when he's not palming a
water polo ball. or laying belly-
down on hiJ surfboanl, or read-
ing bit English assignments,
Cameron does what many other
14-year-olds today do -he goes
on-line. A computer buff,
Cameron builds web pages for
businesseS through a Newport
Beach computer company called
CyberEarth.
•rt•s something tu.q.to do,• he
said.
But even now· CFeron is
learning that work sometimes
takes precedence over a social
llf e. He wasn't able to go to his
first homecoming dance last
month because of an assignment.
"They had no one else to
work, 1'md, well, I'm kind of into
that stuff," Cameron said, adding
that he'll definitely go to the
Sadie Hawkins-style winter for-
mal coming up -if he gets asked.

CERRITOS -The Newport Harbor High
football team's road to a potential CIF South-

a blend of recent and past history, according
to the pairings announced Sunday.
The Sailors (9-1), ranked third in last

13-10 overtime victory over Coach Tom
Meiss' Knights in the 1994 semifinals, before coming from behind with a
late touchdown to knock off Servite, 20-15, in the championship game at
Orange Coast College.
Foothill (8-2) opens with Cypress (4-6), while Servite (9-1) puts its No. 1
credentials up against Western (5-5). Foothill is the host school, thus a New-
port Harbor-Foothill second round site would neccessitate a coin flip.
Servite's expected road to the semifinals would then go through the win-
ner of the El Dorado-El Toro first-round clash. A Servite-El Toro showdown
would be a rematch of last year's title game, won by El Toro, 27-17.
"We knew we'.d be opposite Santa Margarita (seeded No. 2) and Tustin
(seeded No. 3) would be opposite Servite," Brinkley said. MTh.ts isn't a sce-
nario very far from the ones we figured."
Brinkley, entering his eighth postseason in 11 seasons at Harbor, has
guided the Sailors to at least the quarterfinals in all but one of those eight.
He believes this team, the highest scoring in school history, is prepared to
make a strong run at the Tars' title game in five years.
"We're in good position mentally,• Brinkley said. "The road is very
tough, but the kids have the mind-set to do well in the playoffs.•
Anaheim. 1-4 against nonleague foes, .has played three similar oppo-
nents to Newport. Coach Allen Carter's squad has lost to Irvine (42-12) and
Orange (24-20), which Harbor handled 39-14 and 48-14, respectively.
Anaheim beat Savanna, 26-16, one week after Newport took care of the
Rebels, 39-15.
The Colonists throw the majority of the ti.me. Quarterback Luis Gomez
(2,550 aerial yards and 26 TD passes) and receiver Jesus Acevedo (62 catch-
es for 1,045 yards) leatl the way. ·
