COSTA MESA -An a1hnu 88-yec1r-uld woman will be
allowed to live her remaining day<; m a "granny unit" hchind
her daughter's home, the Planrung Commission dcaded Monday.
Helen Morte lette, who is bedridden and reqmres spt•cwl
care. hi:is hved in the unit smce January. Commiss10ners ~aid
that when Mortclctle no longer lives there, her daughter, Nor·
rene lighe, will have to return the unit to its ongindl stale.

challenging the benefits of smaller class-
es, evidence to verify a state report link·
ing smaller classes to higher test .;cores
doesn't exist in Newport-Mesa -yet.
Smee the state changed ib standard-
ized tests last year, the Newport-Me a
Unified School District can't compare its
most recent test scores with previous
years. And since all Newport-Mesa lust-
through third-graders are in classrooms
with a student-teacher rntio of 20·to· l,
the district can't, as the state did, com-
pare classes that have 20· 1 with those
that have a higher ratio
"I haven't seen anyt}ung yet," school
board member Judy Franco said.
Drawing on compansons betwt-en dis-
tricts with smaller classes and those with
larger ratios, the state reported U1at stu-
dents in smaller groupings outp rforrned
their cqunterparts m larger classes on
standardized tests by six percentage
points.

Gerard "Jerry" Wooters
Gerard "Jerry" Wooters died Dec. 26
in Newport Beach. He was 81.
Mr Wooters was born in Philadelphia
and served as a naval photographer in
World War Il.
Upon his discharge, Wooters w~nt to
work for the Los Angeles Police Depart-
ment, where he served m the lntolli·
gence Division before retinng m· 1963.
Mr. Wooters moved lo Newport Beach
in 1960 and ran for the City Counal m
