I considered refusing to help them any more after Orange County Republican head honcho Tom Fuentes wrote the Pilot that his party is "not in need of advice from ·a liberal Democratic partisan hack.• I think he meant me. But, you see, his party is in need of advice. The latest case in point is the Doman-Sanchez brouhaha. As I write this, it appears that Dornan bas lost his congressional seat. But whatever the final result, it is quite clear that the Orange County Republi- can hierarchy has learned noth- ing from this setback. And even in the antediluvian political cli- mate of Orange County, that's going to lead to continued Republican erosion. Republican spokesmen - inquding Doman, himself -are ascribing his loss. to: • The time and money he wasted on a foolish and vainglo- rious run for the presidency; . • Dole's unwillingness to deliver what Doman perceived as the conservative viewpoint aggressively; • The changing demographi~ of Doman's district; • The heavy money the Democrats pumped into this race; • The release of Dole's con- cession s~tement before the polls closed in California. All of these explanations have a measure of merit. But they completely overlook the two mosttfuportant reasons for th~ Doman debacle -which is why the Republican party in Orange County needs advice. The first reason is the candi- date, himself. Maybe Fuentes and his inner circle really get off on Doman's talk about impeach- ing the president as a •mple draft dodger,• but it wasn't play- ing very well anywhere else. Doman's mindless abrasiveness, exces1>ive actions and rhetoric, and loose cannon approach to everyone who didn't share bis views -in both parties -had become a constant embarrass- ment to many of his associates and constituents alike. As a result, a lot of fellow Republicans are dancing on his grave. Orange County political consultant Eileen Padberg. for example, who listened to his attacks on former Superior Court Judge Judy Ryan when she opposed Doman in the 1992 Republican primary. Or the gay Republican Congressman from Wisconsin who held fund-raisers for Santbez after Doman inter- rupted a House debate on appropriations for a tirade against homosexuals in general and the congressman in particu- lar. The second factor the Repub- licans are ignoring has been mentioned here before: Doman was flogging a whole herd of counter-productive, right-wing issues. He is a fervent opponent of abortion, gay rights and gun control, and gets consistentl1 RUFFELL'S UPHOLSTERY INC. 1~"°rvo~~156 joseph n. bell .. low environmental scores, all of which have been identified as positions rejected by a majority of Americans, including many Republicans. An associate in the House called Doman "the most homophobic member of Con- gress• -a label be seems to wear like a badge. A growing cadre of Orange County moderate Republicans are no longer willing to support such candidates. They helped elect a Democrat to the presi; deney by a large margin. And some day -possibly even before it is over -they may pull the Orange County Republican Par- ty, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century. Meanwhile, the Republican hierarchy continues to shovel up hypocrisy for us local boobs. The party that once hired uniformed security guards to intimidate Latino voters in Doman's district is now charging Sanchez with election fraud -with no visible evidence as yet Doman has called Sanchez -who grew up in Orange County -a carpetbagger because of her husband's family home in Palos Verdes, apparent- ly hoping no one will remember that be pulled off a much more flagrant sdnxl in 1984 when he moved to Orange County from Los Angeles to run for Congress in what he correctly perceived as a soft Democratic district. Which brings us to an even more stirring bit of hypocrisy, this one from Doman's political soulmate, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, who issued the fol- lowing statement when it appeared Doman had lost to Sanchez: •The U.S. Congress and the district attorney should fully investigate charges of alien voting in order to get to the bot- tom of it. We will not sit blithely by until the truth comes out, especially if it is affecting our electoral process.• Several months earlier, Rohrabacher's campaign manag- er was-indicted in an election scheme in the 67th Assembly district in which three Republi- can aides have already pleaded guilty to election fraud. Rohrabacher's concern about the "election process" was quite dif- ferent then. He was interested only in protecting the perpetra- tors of the fraud. U they were Democrats, Tom Fuentes might even call them politic<¥ hacks. • JOSEPH N. BEll's column runs every Wednesday. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -It's over for Corona del Mar High's band of over- achievers, but Sea Kings water polo coach John Vargas couldn't be more proud. "This is the most I've ever had a team improve," said the 14-year CdM bead man and U.S. men's national team coach, who has led eight Sea King squads to the CIF Southern Section championship game, including four title winners. Vargas' words came after a 12-7 Southern Section Division I quarterfinal loss to visiting and top-seeded Long Beach Wilson Tuesday. It was a game, both coaches agreed, the Sea Kings stayed in longer than they had a right to. "They had us spooked with their defense," said Wilson Coach Ricardo Azevedo, whose Bruins managed just two counterattack tallies, less than half their average. •111ey played an outstanding tactical match. We had a little more fire power than they did, but they slowed us down. We just took three or four times more shot$ and ·it became a game of percent- ages. They don't have the super athletes like they've had in the past, so they had to be clicking on all cylinders. They were obviously motivated to play the No. 1 seed , but they were a little under- manned." Vargas said his team played far from mistake free, but smothering defense and a methodical offensive approach allowed the hosts to forge a 1-1 tie after one period. Wilson (25--2). which defeated host Cd.M, 13-5, in an Oct. 12 nonleague clash, moved ahead, 3-1, at halftime. The Bruins extended the cushion to 6-2 after three periods, then outscored the Sea Kings, 6-5, in the final seven minutes. MWe gave them a game,• said Vargas, who cited work ethic and his players' willingness to believe in themselves as the key to the late-season surge. The Sea Kings finished second in the Sea View League and defeated Mission Viejo, 8-7, in overtime m the first round to make the quarterfinals and finish 11-13. Wilson took 31 shots to the Sea Kings' 21, but the latter total was padded by three desperation heaves from beyond rnidpool to end the first three quarters. Cd.M senior goalie Billy Messenger made several sterling saves. Messinger stopped a four-meter penalty shot early in the opening period and finished with eight saves. "' Senior Chris Esposito led the CdM offensive thrust, posting five goals. Seruor season scoring leaders Carter Weir and Jason Hokanson also added goals for the Sea Kings, upping their 1996 totals to 59 and 29. respectively. Kawika Tarayao added three assists for the hosts, while Scott Sandland, Weir and Esposito had two steals apiece.
