Three rescued after
canoe tips over
Three men were rescued
from Newport Harbor after one
of them stood up in a canoe and
caused it to capsize early Sun-
day morning, according to Sgt.
Andy Decker of the Newport
Beach Harbor Patrol.
Around 2:05 a.m. 21-year-old
Alex Wise swam ashore and
alerted authorities the canoe
sank near the Newport Harbor
Yacht Club and his two com-
panions were still in the water,
Decker said.
During their search, the Har-
bor Patrol found Don Brown, 30,
had climbed aboard a nearby
boat, and Grant Proctor, 25, was
clutching to a mooring buoy,
Decker said.
The men were rescued, and
paramedics rushed Proctor to
Hoag Hospital to be treated for
hypothermia, Decker said.
The hospital released him
from the emergency room Sun-
day, according to a Hoag
spokesperson.
Decker said he did not know
which of the men stood up in
the canoe. He said the water
temperature was 61 degrees
when the canoe turned over.

Classic at CdM, Newport.

COSTA MESA -1\vo highly-
regarded high school basketball
teams, Los Alamitos and San
Bernardino, have been seeded 1-
2 in the 1996 Daily Pilot Tip-off
Classic Basketball Tournament
Dec. 3-7 at Corona del Mar and
Newport Harbor high schools.
The eight-team tourney, which
consists of two round-robin,
three-game pools, culminates
with the championship game at
Newport Harbor on Saturday
night, Dec. 7.
The balance of the field, in
addition to the seeds and host
schools, consists of Estancia, Troy,
West Torrance and Verdugo Hills.
Steve Brooks' Los Alamitos
Griffins are coming off a 20-7
campaign with a big, talented
and veteran crew, led by the 6-
foot-7 tandem of Matt Komer and
Adam Seaton, Savanna High
transfer Monroe Moore (6-2),
pbiutgumdBlak Havens and all-
around standout Ife Ohalete (6-3).
Sari Bernardino will be bring-
ing a club which, among other
things, m~aged to defeat Mater
Dei and Santa Margarita on the
same day at Newport Harbor's 16-
team sununer basketball Surf City
Classic. '
The Cardinals are coached by
Andre Smith, a former assistant at
Costa Mesa High during the Billy
Brewer regime.
San Bernardino, 8-19 a year
ago, returns seven players,
including every starter, with 6-6
point guard Kevin Richardson the
focal subject.
"We'll be aggressive, play hard
and run," said Smith at Sunday's
pre-tournament luncheon at
Newport Rib Company.
'IWo games of major signifi-
cance involve the Estancia
Eagles, who open with San
Bernardino on the second night of
play, then tackle host Corona del
Mar the following night. The San
.lJ~rn~o t4.sk is.obvious noting the seeCfed status and the' CdM
game is yet another in a long his-
tory of classic games between the
two Newport-Mesa Unified
School District rivals.
The Eagles, under first-year
coach Rich Boyce, enter with a
lineup bolstered by the presence
of Mater Dei transfer Selwyn
Mans~ll. blending his talents with
such returnees as junior Sam Nel-
son and senior Brandon Casillas,
among others from a 23-5 club
which won the Pacific Coast
League championship.
Larry Hirst's Newport Harbor
Sailors may not be entering at full
strength.
Standouts Danny Pulido and
Greg Wertman are expected to be
playing football in anticipation of
a victory Friday night against
Foothill; and if disaster should
befall the Sailors in football, nei-
ther Pulido or Wertman would be
close to being in "basketball
shape" for the tournament.
Newport, nevertheless, enters
with a strong t'o~tbigent olf>'the
credentials of 6-3 Pete Cunning-
hamand point guard Matt Jame-
son, among others.
Corona del Mar's game, under
Coach Paul Orris, has three
returning lettermen (Corey Gori-
ty, Charlie Peyton and Nick
Frien.d), although the strength of
the Sea Kings would appear to be
down the road revolving around
6-5 sophomore Dennis Alshuler.
"We're young," was the con-
sensus of Orris' comments,
upstaged only by Hirst's claim of
"We're very young."
Troy brings an mteresting
group from an 18-12 team a year
ago, with two returning starters.

• Winning the coin flip Saturday morning gives
Newport Harbor an edge for Friday's second-round
game, and any edge is a good edge against Knights.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The
Newport Harbor High football
team won home-field advantage
for Friday's CIF Southern Section
Division V Quarterfinal against
Foothill, but Sailors' Coach Jeff
Brinkley lost a dinner in the deal.
I told (freshmen) Coach (Joe)
Urban I'd buy him dinner if he
won the coin toss and he went
down there (to the section office
in Cerritos) and took care of it for
us (Saturday)." said Brinkley, who
termed getting the home game •a
huge deal.•
The coin toss would not have
been necessary, of course, with-
out getting past first-round oppo-
nent Anaheim, which Brinkley
and his fourth-seeded Tars took
care of by earning a 29-6 home
triumph.
A strong defensive perfor-
mance, including nine quarter-
back sacks and two inteTceptions,
was the key to eliminating the
pass-happy Colonists. But limit-
ing Anaheim quarterback Luis
Gomez to just six completions in
19 attempts, nine less than his
average, was more than a tag-
team effort by front four standouts
Erich Schader (three sacks), Reed
Johns, Derek Fox and Jason
Deere (all two apiece).

Freeman and Erik kuntola, as

anticipation over next sea-
well as linebackers Danny Pulido,
Pete Hogan and Joe Urban, also
deserved credit for blanketing
Anaheim receivers.
"With the exception of the one
breakdown on their (80-yard)
touchdown pass, our secondary
did a great job covering people."
said Brinkley, who was so confi-
dent in his front's ability to handle
a smaller Anaheim offensive line,
he stayed away from the blitzes
that have become a familiar
weapon this season.
"We went into the game trying
to play five guys in the box
(roughly the 3-yard area on each
side of the ball frolJ,l taqkle to tight
end), and detaching six guys on
coverage. We felt our front guys
were a little more physical, so
they could handle it, and they did.
H (Anaheim) would have started
running the ball more effectively
(it totaled minus 9 yards on the
ground, including SO yards lost on
sacks), we would have started
blitzing more."
Brinkley said the Tars' sub-par
offensive performance may have
been attributable to playing not to
lose.

son, which began in the Costa Mesa High football coaching
office about a month ago, according to Coacb Jeny Howell, is
enough to nullify any lingering negativity from Friday night's
14·0 playoff-opening loss to Sunny Hills.
•The kids were disappointed, but not down,.. said Howell,
who joins his scores of returning standouts in pointing with
excitement toward 1997.
•we've got at least eight starteg coming back on both sides of
the ball and our kids felt good about the way we played f ootbe.11
and the way we grew this season. Our kids are anxious to go."
Howell said be has all but decided to shift from the double
wing to the Wing· T offense, in order to become more diversified.
"We want 'to be able to throw the ball better, and that means
~ting more options than just play--action puses against
10-man fronts," Howell said.
Howell indicated that Sunny Hills' Wing-T, which gives run-
ning ba.cla more time to make cuta upon receiving handofts, was

With that in mind, let's take a
look at a few local players who
will be tripping the light fantastic
on the college 9Celle this season.
One of those is Dane Plock, a
6-foot-1 point guard from
Estancia Ciigh.
Plock was 1ast season's Daily
Pilot Ne~rt-Mesa District and
Pacific Coast League Player of
the 'Var. He was The to_p
three-point shooter in Orange
Counfy with 85 treys . He had six points in his
collegiate debut Friday with Cal State Fullerton, a
season-opening 75-67 win over
DEEP SEA
SUNDAY'S COUNTS
Dllvey"s LoG• -no report.
Ne:dpOf't lMMing · 2 boats,
27 anglers. 7 sand bass, 4 calico bass.
5 rockfisti, 5 sculpin, 1 whitefish,
1 leopard sharic, 171 mackerel.
With a powder-blue-and-gold
air of suspicion continuing Io
swirl over Westwood,' former
Newport Harbor standout Ramy
Sho_Ulery and his teammates at
USC may be in good position to
make a run at a Pac-ro title.
Shouk:ry, a three-year varsity
starter with the Sailors, played
the past two y_ears at the
University of Texas-San Antonio
and Col.lii1 County Community
College in Plano before
transfering to Southern CaJ. Stay tuned folks, we're only
getting started. Heck, we haven't even rooked at the women's
