They can be used to prop up computer monitors, to fill empty bookshelves, or they can be 100% recycled back into tele- phone books or envelopes. Costa Mesa residents and businesses are asked to drop off outdated directories for recycling through Dec. 13 at 16 different locations citywide. Seven years ago, the Costa Mesa Sanitary District was the first in the county to launch a telephone directory recycling program. Since the program's inception, more than 230,000 directories have been recycled. The All-American Boys Cho- rus, which was formed 26 years ago, claims the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa as its headquarters and is made up of about 110 boys ages 8 to 15 years old. The recording is a tribute to the contributions and charitable work of both George Hoag II, who died in 1995, and his wife Patty Hoag, who died Oct. 31. The grant will help the chorus for years to come, Tony Man- rique, executive director for the chorus, said in a press release. Going for the gold. There, at the Olympic Game, every ounce of skill and heart comes to the surface and the gold medal is won in dramatic fashion. On the podium and with stirring John Williams music ringing throughout, the gold medal emerges and is presented, draped around the athlete's neck. The cameras zoom in and there, in the middle of the medal is a big bottle of cola in the middle of the design, symbolic of the corporation's generous gifts to the Olympic Games movement. I • L--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maybe they could sell some oil filters or something at the door. Can you imagine the Olympic Games going for that? Yep, pretty preposterous. If it were true it would make most sick to their stomach, almost as sick as I feel as I stare at this monstrosity that is being force.fed to the champions of high school athletics in the state of California. I'm talking about oar Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor stars presently competing for an individual girls tennis cha.Iµpionship ... Nadia, Nina, Caylan, brace yourself. Newport's girls .who shoot for the CIF Division I team aown this morning, you're but a step away. And you, Danny Pulido, as you and your Newport Harbor High football teammates strive ts:>ward your ultimate goal, victory in Week 14 for the Division V crown. And I'm talking about our cross country teams from Costa Mesa and Corona del Mar, who are beaded for State this Saturday. Hoops; baseball; volleyball; track and field; the whole array. When an individual or team reaches these plateaus of success, they are entitled to a CIF patch which adorns their letterman's jacket. or sometimes simply graces the walls of home or on the mantle. But now, if you want that wonderful keepsake patch. you get a promo for an oil company to go with it. It's not free, you have to buy it, if entitled. And no one's forcing anyone to buy it. But if you want one, it's the only one you're going to get. Most often it is the booster's club which obtains the patch; sometimes the athletic department scrapes up the money; the athlete can buy it, as well, if no one steps forth. This trf!asured keepsake for champions, as well as finalists and quarterfinalists, does not come easily. A reminder, forever, of some of the absolute highlights of an athlete's life. Now, thanks to unbelievable corporation greed, that CIF patch is laced with the commercialism of corporate logos. For years, now, CIF has found itself in the sorrowful state of depending on corporate sponsorship to keep it going financially. Apparently not content to have its banners everywhere at the playoff games, as well as the event actually named for it, the Oil Slicks have gone one better. Now the logos of the gasoline company and its little mini-market venture, are inscribed through the patch. •Oh, God, l hate that," responded one Newport·Mesa HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS Unified School District official when he saw a photo of it Friday night. Who wouldn't hate it? You would think sponsorship of any event for young people doing good things would be based on the.desire to (1) do something right for the right people; (2) creating a state of good will; and (3), have your company recoqnized for being part of the community. N ever did I believe a sponsor would want to change the form.at for its own gain, as has television and its bastardization of virtually everything it touches with its manipulations. It's very clear there is only one motivation for the Oil Slicks, and that is to promote themselves. It would be hard to conceive of anyone at CIF really desiring such an ugly eyesore in the middle of the time-honored tradition of the CIF patch, but Tars shoot for the moon CLAREMONT -Players and fans of Peninsula High remember the chants -·we're No. 11 • - like it was yesterday. "With that transfer from Wood· bridge (Courtney Tenerelli) play· ing, I'm sure (the Sea Kings) thought her coming over would be the difference .against New· port Harbor (in a possible CIF title·game showdown),• Cox said. •Maybe they expected it too much." The Sailors and the Sea Kings split their two Sea View League matches, with Newport Harbor winning the most recent encounter, 11·7, on Oct. 31, as Olson's Sailors won seven of nine doubles sets. Following the league i.pdivid· ual championships, Tenerelli transferred from Sea View League champion Woodbridge to CdM Newport Harbor traveled to Camarillo in the semifinals, win· ning 12·6, the only postseason match in which the Tars dropped a set. Emily Barker and Brooke Taylor swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sailors. Peninsula got revenge against CdM in the semifinals, as the Panthers' No. 2 doubles team of Stacey Tomkiewicz and Christie Tjong came from behind to knock off Cd.M's No. 1 doubles team of Tunerelll and Jenny Meyer and clinch a 10·8 win for Peninsula. Peninsula hopes to get revenge today against Newport Harbor. JEREMY ~EFEVER DEREK FOX •• JASON DEERE . being in the financial constraints they are, it woula appear to be one more concession in hopes of maintaining a cash flow from the grossly excessive profits of the Oil Slicks. And it is undoubtedly mandated from State CIF, not the Southern Section. There has been a constant request from State CIF to everyone in the media to label their championship playoffs with the Oil Slicks' moniker, but to my knowledge in virtually all cases, such requests have been ignored by the print media. I can tell you, as far as I'm concerned, and I believe it to be a universal theory, it's still the Sugar Bowl, it's still the Rose Bowl and it will always be the CIF Southern Section Playoffs, as well as State CIF Playoffs. Money Will not change that. With the soiling of the CIF patch, one wonders what will be next? Slurpees at the concession stand? M aybe the players can have messages across the back of their jerseys ... •Regular, 99.9 at 5th & Main." Maybe they could paint the •banner• across the entire playing surface at each event. Maybe ... maybe that's enough ideas. They seem to have plenty of their own. There's no question, CIF would be in dire straights without the financial gains from the sellout. Without it would mean finding a better sponsor. Just once I would like to see a mega·corporation step up and do the right thing, simply because it's the thing to do, with simple, modest credit. I can assure you, everyone would see it, and they would love it. And that's something the Oil Slicks have never experienced. In th1s case, taking a stint on the vanity playoff team offers the next-best alternative. Newport Harbor didn't bring up any freshmen for its postseason run toward a CIF Southern Section Division V title, but a handful of Mustang frosh made their way on to the expanded playoff roster. Jimmy Herzog, a combination running back\linebacker, joined his brother Steve on the varsity. Shawn Perryman, who plays on the offensive line and at linebacker, is another freshman who made the jump along with David Weir (fullback/linebacker) and linemen Robert Hieliger and Chas. Newton.
