While it's a time of family togetherness and warmth for most of us, it's a time of gnawing despair for the clients of the Abuse Prevention Center. People who live on the edge throughout the year are often pushed over it by the height- ened expectations of the holi- days that bring, finally, only deeper depression. And far too often, that ends lo striking Qut at those closest at band. Like children. Sandra knows all about this. That's the environment in which she lived for most of her 24 yea.rs. But Chrlsbnas is going to be different this year for Sandra and her two small children. Her stocking has been filled for the first time in her young life with a sense of hope and accomplish- ment and well-being by the Abuse Prevention Center and a tireless, 'determined, and deeply caring volunteer named Rochelle Hoffman. With a home environment bounded by an absent mother and abusive stepfather, Sandra dropped out of school and took to the streets when she was 12. She joined up with a much older drug culture. •1 didn't fit in at home,~ she said, ·and I wanted to fit in somewhere desperately.• To do that required money to buy drugs, so she learned bow to steal. She married when she was 18, was put on a methadone program when she got pregnant, then turned back to hard drugs -along with her husband, who was sent to jail soon after the baby was born. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot .CLAREMONT Since Miraleste. Rolling Hills and Palos Verdes rolled into one in 1991 to form modem-day Peninsula High, its girls tennis players have had an attitude. •we were fired up, because I don't think our girls liked being underdogs, especially in the Corona del Mar match ... that was a big one,• Peninsula Coach Tom Cox said, after his squad upset top-seeded Newport Harbor, 13- 5, in the CIF Southern Section putting Case and Barker away. The first-round victory by Emily Barker and Taylor was Newport Harbor's only close win. The Sailors won seven of eight dose sets when they defeated Peninsu- la two months ago. In the set, with the Sailors behind, 4-1, Barker-Taylor came from two games down, 2-4, to force a tie-breaker. In the tie- breaker, they went ahead in points, 5· 1, but Peninsula came back and won three straight Division I champi- onship match Tues- day at the Clare- mont Club. Newport Harbor (22-3) snapped Peninsula's 120- matcb winning streak Sept. 19 in a nonleague match, winning five tie- breakers and two other sets, 6-4. "We were fired up, because I don't think our girls liked being underdogs ... " points. It was tied three times in the tie- breaker, before Tay- lor's backhand lob landed cleanly over Tjong's head for a winner at 9-8. •Brooke and -PENINSULA COACH TOM COX Emily really stepped up to keep us in there,• Olson said. ·They've been doing that all sea-·sweet revenge,· Cox said. •Tuey came into our den and beat us there. But I'd rather be good in late November than September." The third-seeded Panthers (22- 3), who defeated Corona del Mar in the semifinals on Friday, 10-8, improved to 141-3 in their six- year history, claiming their sixth consecutive CIF Division I title. • Peninsula also defeated the Sailors in 1993, 17-1, for the CIF Division I title, when Newport Harbor seniors Vanessa Godbey, Katie Canright and Emily Barker were freshmen. Peninsula started quickly in the final, winning four of six sets in the opening round, including a pair of 6-4 victories in singles and another in double$. And had Newport Harbor's Barker and Brooke Taylor not pulled out a tie-break victory against Peninsula's No. 1 doubles team in the first round, the Sailors would've been down, 1-5. •Tue difference today was in the first round,• said Newport Harbor Coach Fletcher Olson, whose squad was behind, 8-4, after two rounds. Peninsula's Stacey Tomkiewicz and Christie Tjong, who won the decisive set against CdM in the semifinals, won the decisive set again when they topped Kristen Case-Sarah Barker, 6-0. Tomkiewicz and Tjong bad seven match points before son.• Godbey was the only mainstay in singles for the Tars, sweeping, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 froQl her No. 2 position. •Both teams are very tough," Olson said. -They just played tougher than we did. And, no, it's never disheartening when you lose to Peninsula. We had no advantage, but I think we had an opportunity. Absolutely, we were not overconfident, but we did come here to break Peninsula's CIF championship record. We knew Peninsula was going to be here at the Finals.· Aside from Godbey's play, Peninsula dominated in singles, as well, winning five of six. ·1 can't believe we won in singles," Cox said. "Tb.is is the total reverse score of what they beat us." Erica Nelson won the Sailors' other singles set, 6-3, over Penin- sula's Jane Kim. The Tars lose only three play- ers (Canright, Godbey and Bark- er) for next year's team, and start- ed four freshmen -Chelsea God- bey, Amanda Collopy, Sarah Barker and Case -in the Finals.
