FIVE EASY QUESTIONS
• Of bitlls arui bea!S
in Newport.Beach
• EDITOR'S NOTE: Bryan Riley, Investor center man-
ager frn the Newport Beach brokerage firm Quick
I Reilly, answe~ questions about the n6ck f"!'arket.
For those who don't know money martcets
from mutual funds, what is the S"tate of
the stock market right now?
CertainJr we've seen one of the
strongest bulJ markets m history over the
lac;t few years, and recently there's been
some volatihty, especially oversects. The
bottom line ts that we can probably expect
a few more bumps m the economy, but
bclSically our fundarrientah as a country
should help uc:; pull through long·term.
What do you foresee happening in the
market in the immediate future?
. It's dtlhcult to predict whdt the markets
w1ll do m the near future, despite whdt the
media and pundits mdy tell.vott. For most
mdividudl invc:;tors, it's necessary not to
wony dbout day-to-day volatility. If you've
developed a sound financial plan tor retire-
ment or other long-term goals, you don't
net>d to JurytP every time the market does.
What general advice do you give
Investors?
Get involved and active w1th your
finances and c;io it 1mme>d1ately. U you want
to retire, or fund any number of lifetime
goals like college or buymg a home, stock
market investments can help make your
plans a success Investors should find a
hnn hke Quick & Reilly, start a good rela-
tionship with a personal broker and start
developing a sound mve.'>lrnent plan
1mmcdinlely. On another note. investors
need to rt>t1lize that the last few years have
been e xceptionally strong -they can't
expect thclf investments to return 20-
plus%. HistoncaUy, stocks hdVe delivered
a 10% .annmtllzed return, so in the long
run this is the runge that's realistic.

NEWPORT BEACH -Pacific
Mercantile Bank has announced
pldns to become the first new
bank to open headquarters in
Newport Beach in 15 years.
At one tune, Orange County
boasted more than 40 bdnk head-

and professionals.
Veteran Orange County bank-

Pacific Mercantile Bank plans
to become involved in the com-
munity and looks forward to giv-
ing Orange County residents a
choice that they have perhaps
been lacking in the past few
years, Dellerba said. The bank
should not have any problems fit-
ting into the Orange County
banking industry, he added. The
company boasts plenty of experi-
ence in banking, specifically fu
Orange County. Dellerba believes
a local independent bank can bet-
ter seive the community and the
rewards to both the community
and the bank can be tremendous.
•Business people's needs
aren't being met in big banking,"
Dellerba said. •Tue bigger the
institution, the bigger target they
have to go for."
By foeusing on smaller bUSJ-
nesses and professionals, Pad.fie

offer more one-on-one service.
Pacific Mercantile Bank plans
to open other branches, but that is
subject to regulatory approval.
The bank bas taken ovet the
former Great Western Saving

COSTA. MESA -The City Council
on Monddy will discuss proposed
amondments to an ordinance that
addresses the flow of. information
between the council, the city manager
dnd city employees. .. •
Under one of the amendments. whiC:h
were proposed by Mayor Gary Mona-
han staff members would be required
to provide information requested' by one
council member to all council members.
"It's to help clear up any misunder-
standings with the staff and with the
council, and especially to back up our
city manage!, and to keep the informa.
lion flowing to him and to the other
council members,• Monahan said.
The other amendment requires a
ffidJOnty of the City Council to approve
apy council member's request for-infor-
mation that necessitates exte nsive
research or commitment of funds, per-
sonnel or eqwpment.
"fl keeps [council members] from

Councilwoman

objects to the amend-

• Two victories in the

Newport girls frosh-soph

6 iris water polo programs
have only been around for
a few years at most
schools, so· the level of play at the
lower levels bas been an
Wl)plown factor. In an effort to ·
see what's out there, the
inaugural El Toro Frosh-Soph
Classic was held Fnday and
Saturday. "

Newport Harbor Hlgh knocked
of Sea View League rivals El

\ the cbamplonslup. ·u was a testing ground for
play at the lower leve~s,"
Newport,Coach Les Cutler said.
"We thought it was a goOd idea

The Sailors, still undefeated
after 10 games, encountered little
resistance m pool-play action
Fnday. Ne~rt Harbor defeated
Huntington'Beach, 15-1, Irvine
8-3, and Capistrano Valley, 12-2.
Saturday's Championship pool
would be a different story. •All
three teams came from the Sea
View League,• Cutler said. "We
were also without Caitlin Adams,
one of our better players who has
shown vast improvement since
last year. She is an mtelllgent

player in regards to knowledge
of the.game.•
The Sailors opened up with El
Toro and the score was tied
going into the fourth quarter.
With 25 seconds left, Jenna
Booth came off the bench and
s'corcd the winning goal for a 5-4
victory.
Newport Harbor followed up
with a 4·1 wm over Santa Mar·

was the defense which was the
key to both victones.

11, NEWPORT BEACH -For
•• some teams, all it takes is a little
' faith.
With such tough competition
at the Newport Harbor/Corona
del Mar Tournament, not much
was peeled from Poway
High's girls water polo team.
Still a little faith and some
aggressive play was all it took as
the Titans defeated Newport
Harbor, 9-6, to win the touma-
. ment championship Saturday at
Newport Harbor.
•A lot of teams overlooked
us,• Poway Coach Shae Phllputt
said. "Because Coronado beat
us early in the season, a lot of
teams didn't know how good we
really are."
But Poway's players knew
and were talking about all those
who doubted them after the
game.
Newpon Harbor Coach Bill
~ett was swprised at how his
own team played after dumping
previously undefeated Villa
Park in the semifinals. "I thlnk
we came out a little Oat alter our
big wm th.ls morning,~ Barnett
said. "Still, our girls deserve
credit for hanginq in and fight-
ing until the end.
Poway (12-1) wasted no time
taking control of the game's
tempo, scoring three goals, two
of which came from long range.
Newport Harbor showed
signs of recovery after two goals
by Jenna Barto and a goal by
Ka~erine Gregg cut the lead to
5-3 with two minutes left in the
second quarter.
Meanwhile, goalie Erin
Kennedy had adjusted to
Poway's attack cind made four
key saves which kept the Sailors
close.
Poway's Sandy OnweUer
scored late in the quarter, but
Jocelyn Mandenno scored
quickly and the Sailors went
into halftime behind, 6-4.
•They have a good team,•
Barnett said. "They had a tight
defense and didn't let us get
many quality shots on goal."
The Sailors (9-3) struggled in
transition and gave up some
costly goals, letting the gapte
slip away in the fourth quarter.
Bartp and Kyndra Cox scored for
Newport Harbor down the
stretch. '
"Overall, we played bard,"
Barnett said, "But those mis-
takes which let them get
through were the difference in
the game.•
Against Villa Park, now 14-1,
the Sailors took an early lead,
but the Spartans battled back
for ·a 4-4 tie at halftime. Danee
French then gave Vtlla Park a
one-goal lead on a skip shot
with 2:50 left in the third quar-
ter.
Kathryn Belden tied the score
with 4 19 left in the game on a
spinrung backhand from two
meters
Mandertno then stole the ball
and drew an e1cction Manderi-
no passed to Barto, put in the
score and the Sailors had the
lead for good.
Diana Day added a late goal
as insurance. ·we just didn't play well,"
Villa Park Coach John Carcich
said. "(Newport Harbor) really
played a good game, but we just
had an off day.•
Villa Park, currently the No.
