During her freshman year at

"I never thought about run-

Leaming about leadership
and diffusing student apathy
on campus is a routine.part of
Wise's day.
"During our Monday meet-

learn everything from posture
and how to present yourself
correctly to the leadership
styles of famous presidents,"
WJ.Se said. "On Wednesdays,
we have an open forum for stu-
dents to come and speak about
anything they think is impor-

groups to talk about ·current
projects.
"OCC students who just
wake up, go to work, go to
school and don't get involved

experience. It's all what you
make of it, even at the junior
college level. "

just some of the things Mariners
bas been doing.
In the sixth grade, we just
got back from Outdoor Science
School at Ponderosa Pines. We
had a lot of fun. We also are
starting our Oral History Report
and starting to learn songs for
the Oral Tea.
The fifth grade is dissecting
sharks and fish. They are also
doing poetry folders at comput-
ers. The fourth grade is learn-
ing about the California Indians
and they are going to the Envi-
ronmental Nature Center. They
are also going to the Irvine Art
.Museum to see Impressionists'
paintings. They also do P.E.
together.
The third grade is doing the
Campfire Classroom Program
to gain knowledge and skills.
They also did the Great Pump-
kin Caper. They weighed, mea-
sured, cowited and estimated
the seeds of the pumpkin.
The second grade is going to
the Kellogg House Discovery
Museum. They are studying
pilgrims, Columbus and ances-
tors. They are interviewing old-
er people. -
First grade is busy for the
Thanksgiving Program and
feast. Three classes will be Indi-
ans and three are Pilgrims in
the program. In the program
they will sing, dance and recite
poems. In kindergarten, they
are studying Indians and Pil-
grims and the first Thanksgiv-

healthy combination of compe-

The student body of just

strong aniong high school buddi,es
By Jennifer Armstrong, lJaiJy Pilot
1\venty years ago, 17 local
high school boys swore their
friendships would endure until
their deaths.
Their senior year they pooled
their money and asked one of
their pa1e1ftS to buy them a bottle
of champagne for a tradition they
called the "Last Man." The idea
for the tradition originated with
group leader Tom Freeman's dad,
who formed a similar group of
friends in World War Il.
Every Thanksgiving they gath-
er in Corona del Mar to toast their
friendships, usually with cans of
beer. When one of the friends
dies, the rest of the group will
eulogize him at the annual gath-
ering. When only one man
remains, he will -0pen the cham-
pagne and toast by himseli to his
lifelong friends.
But it's not a ll so serious.
They've yet to lose a member.
And after the toast, the celebra-
tion livens up e nough lo be mis-
taken for a fraternity bonding
night.
It all ,starts the night before
Thanksgiving when they gather
at one of the guys' parents' homes
in Corona del Mar. The guys
became friends while attending
Corona del Mar High School and
working together at the Fun Zone
Boat Co. in Balboa. Now, with
their wives and children, they
return to their hometown from all
over the country -San Diego, San
Francisco, Chicago, Pittsburgh,
AUanta.
Then they read letters from the
friends who couldn't m~e it for
various reasons: a new job, a wife
about to give birth.
This year, as Santa Ana winds
and the smell of men's cologne
wafted through Chuck and Gary
Buelow's parents' living room,
nine of the 17 raised their Coors
Light to 20 years of friendship.
After that they headed out to The
Place, a Coast Highway bar
owned by a friend who went to
Corona del Mar High School with
them.
"They really roll out the red
carpet for us there," said Free-
man, 37, now a Lake Forest resi·
dent.
On Thanksgiving, they con-
vene at Abraham Lincoln Ele-
mentary School where most af
them attended grade school.
There they divide into teams and
play football before heading back
to someone's home for Thanks-
giving dinner.
And in that game lies the true
key to bringing everyone back to
Corona del Mar year after year,
Chuck Buelow said. "You just
want to keep playing sports," he
explained when asked why their
friendships have endured.•

G uill. ermo "Memo" Ortiz
bad only been out of
prison two weeks before
be returned to the needle.
After a three-year stint at Iron-
wood State Prison ended Oct. 20,
the 43-year-old heroin junkie
went home to San Diego and fell
back into old, habits, "slamming
three bags a day."
Jobless, driftinglrom apart-
ment to apartment, alley to alley,
be faced odds that pointed direct-
ly to a morgue slab.
Enter brother-in-law Jose
Coronado, who happens to be a
pastor at La Puerta Abierta
Church in Costa Mesa. Last week
he drove down with bis wife to
find Ortiz and bring him back.
u1 told him, we're going to tie
you up, we're going to put you in
the trunk, and we're going to take
you," said a smiling Coronado, a
former heroin fiend himself, sit-
ting in his church office across
from Ortiz.
Ortiz returned the smile. A day
ago he was shooting heroin. Now
he was clean, scrubbed, and
shaven, and the withdrawal pains
hadn't struck full-force yet. "I'm
sweating a little bit," he said.
Ortiz will spend Thanksgiving
with Coronado and his family
before enrolling in Teen Chal-
lenge, a drug rehabilitation pro-
gram in Bakersfield. He's been
through the program four times
before. This time he hopes to stay
clean for good.
"If I get out there (on the
streets), I'm gonna collapse and
go to hell," Ortiz said. "I don't
want to go to hell. I believe .qi
God, real bad.• !'.:>
Ortiz, who says he has been in
and out of prison on drug charges
since be was 18, has a manner
that seems uncommonly gentle
for a convict. He is thin to the
point of skeletal, with clothes that
seem two sizes too large for him,
and crude tattoos cover his arms,
neck, and back. There are still

scabs over the artwork on his left
arm where the needles went in.
In the presence of Coronado,
who once stole to support a $150-
a-day habit, Ortiz behaves with
extreme deference bordering on
awe. drtiz listens carefully when
the pastor speaks in the, soft voice
that be uses away from the pulpit.
And when Coronado thunders
out a sermon to a packed congre-
gation, pacing the stage, growl-
ing, gesturing, Ortiz seems abnost
transfixed. He hopes to emulate
the pastor's rise from the hell of
addiction.
•I tell everybody in prison,"
Ortiz said. "I tell them my broth-
er-in-law's a man of God. They all
trip out. I say he was an addict,
now he's a man of God." Having
seen the influence of religion in
prison, he said, "I say, 'God's got
to be real.'"
Coronado celebrated his 45th
birthday Sunday, and he is not
naive. He knows the pull of a
junkie's habit. He knows a junkie
will do almost anything for a fix.
But he has allowed Ortiz to live
with him, with his wife and his
two daughters, since the rescue
from San Diego.
The gesture of good faith is not
lost OD Ortiz.
"I'm an addict, OK?" Ortiz
said. "They've got money in their
house, they've got 1Vs in their
house. They're giving me the
responsibility to let me stay
there."
Another new face will be at
the Coronado household this
Thanksgiving. It belongs to an 8-
year-otd girl named Margarita,
whose mother is undergoing
heroin withdrawals at the Bakers-
field program. The girl will stay
with 'the Coronados until the
mother is well again. Coronado
said it could take years.
But the family will celebrate
this Thanksgiving in a South
Coast Drive apartment, which
they can afford only with the help

of local churches and charities.
Last month a fire scorched the
Hamilton Street house they lived
in for 13 years. The insurance
money, which has not arrived,
might not ever come through.
The Coronados are wearing
donated clothes. They are broke.
And the pastor's worsening liver
disease, induced by years of drug
abuse, has driven him to the hos-
pital often in the last month.
As a pastor he is accustomed to
helping others and resists asking
for help himself, he said.
"There is a pride in your heart
that says, 'No, you're not going to
do that,'" he said. "We have to
humble ourselves ... to say,
'Please, we need your help. Help
us.'"

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
State honors on the line Saturday
• Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa
boys both have legitimate shots
at bringing home the Division IV
championship banner from State.
By Jim Walters, Daily Ptlot
The 10th annual CIF State Cross Coun-
try Championships at Woodward Park in
Fresno are less than 24 hours away and
there's still no clear-cut favorite in Boys
Division JV.
AB late as last weekend, onJy four points
separated the state's top three boys teams
at the ClP Southern Section Champi-
onships run at Mt. San Antonio College.
Third-ranked Ojai Nordhoff High fin-
tahed MCOnd with 123 points1 No. 1 Corona
d.el Mar took third at 125; and No. 2 Costa
Mesa ftmlbed fourth with 121 points. And
none at the th1M walked away with the
cbampombip hardware.
'Iba.t honor went to unranked Sultana of

nowhere to finish eight points ahead of the
field.

those four square off one last time for a
chance at the ultimate •piece of wood."
While CdM and Costa Mesa will be car-
rying the Newport-Mesa District's banner
on the boys side, the CdM girls team will
be the lone local representative in Division
JV. Newport Harbor's Alicia McFall, who
finished second last week at CIF, qualified
for State as an individual and will compete
in Division m.
In the Division rv team competition,
Nordhoff figures to be the cream on the
girls side, even through they're not in the
state rankings.
•There No. 2 and No. 4 runners last
week haven't been running the past fe~
times," Sea King Coach Bill Sumner said.
•That affects the state rankings. Believe
me, nobody is going to beat them Saturday
unless something major happens."
The See Kings finished 70 points behlnd
Nordhoff at last week's ClP Champl·
onshlps.
The field also includes No. 1 Clayton
Valley and No. 2 Carondotet, both of Con·
cord in the Northern Dtmton.
Jill Quaye was Corona's top finlsher last
week. taking 18th place In 18:33.
Only 17 HCOnds separated their next
four runners. Jefuiller Morgan wos 21st
f
( 18:36); Vanessa Jamieson, 24th (18:41);
Jean Garcia, 27th (18:49); and Jennifer
Blair, 29th, in 18:53. Liz Morse, who injured
her hip, is doubtful for Saturday.
·we're the underdog in the back of the
pack, but we made it and we're going to try
and win this thing," Sumner said. •1n real-
ity, we don't have any stars. They'll all have
to get together and do a good job.•
The best chance for a State title rest on
the boys' side.
•without a doubt, the toughest teams
are in the Southern Section ~ year,"
Sumner said. •w e're dragging our compe-

"Only one guy c0n win the race, but we
have a pack. We have a good chance to

Jason Rogers was the top ftnllber for
CdM Wt week, taking llXth lD 15 minutes

riches. •1 think it will be a repeat of last Sat-

but we placed three runners in front of

15:08 and Jamie Carillo, coming back from
an illness, was 11th in 15:14. Sultana's best
finisher was 12th.
"We lost behind those three," Busi said.
"Our No. 4 and S guys need to tighten up.

that they will be beaten on the
race course every time they
compete has lessened the sort for
them. In addition, this
knowledge has prompted many
to avoid racing against these
top-notch sailors.
Because this feeling seems to
be widespread, a number of
classes have put restrictions on
professionals in the sport, with
some even not allowing these
sailors out on the water.
Though this feeling is valid,
putting restrictions on who can
sail in a regatta is a step
backward in the promotion of
the sport of sailing. Racing
sailors are, relatively speaking,
few in number as it is and by not
allowing people to compete, we
have diminished those nwnbers
even more.
In response to this dilemma
and an effort to "level the
playing field," US Shilling has
proposed the Sailing
Achievement Level Table (SALT)
ranking system, which the
organization is currently testing.
stephanie
keefe
Basically, the system assigns a
number to each sailor, a number
that is dependent upon
performance and is changeable.
This system is applicable to
every sailor, from beginner to
professional
One's ranking is the highest
result achieved in a regatta over
the past five years. The ranking
then drops one point every five
years from that highest ranking if
no other regatta is sailed in. The
ranking itself is a combination of
a sailor's skill and the level of the
regatta.
First to be determined is the
position of the sailor. The choices
are:
• Skipper -Skipper, crew in
O lympic class, tactician or
helmsman in the America's Cup
or Match racing worlds.
• Key crew -Plays a
significant role in success of boat,
crew on any international class
at Level D or higher (to be
discussed below}; crew at any
ISAF, US Sailing, ICYRA or ISSA
championship; navigator,
tactician, crew boss or bowman
SALT implements a 1-10 scale
for individual sailors to provide a
comparative basis and allow
sailors of all abilities to compete
against each other.
• on offshore boat.
Tili.s •all-inclusive) system is
offered to race organizers as an
alternative to Appendix A lA of
the International Yacht Racing
Rules.
• Crew -none of the above.
With the position determined,
we move to the regatta itseU.
Regattas are rated for number of
competitors and quality of
participation.

1\No examples of how this system works:
•Joe is a skipper of a Star. He wins the SCYA Midwinters. Since this is a Level B regatta (sailors
from one YRA), his ranking is a 5. He then competes in the Star North Americans in 1995 and
finishes 28th of 70. This is a level E regatta, so his ranking moves up to 6. He then competes in the
Star Worlds in 1996. Since the Worlds is an international regatta, all of his crew gets a ranking of 5.
Their respective SALT rankings will stay the same until 2001 unless they achieve a higher ranking.
•Bob enjoys sailing, but he doesn't know a lot about racing. His friend John invites him to race
on his Santa Cruz 50 at the local yacht club's July 4th regatta. Bob Agrees, does some hiking, passes
out a fe w sandwiches and the boat finishes second out of eight boats. Bob's ranking is 1, John's is 3.
Besides "handicapping" sailors, this system offers a number of interesting opportunities to race
organizers, including giving prizes to different achievement levels, determining divisions by SALT
numbefs, determining championship competitors and to adjust handicap numbers for boats.
As stated before, this system is currently being tested by US Sailing and will potentially be
field-tested at a variety of events next summer. US Sailing would greatly appreciate any input.

PORTER CAPTURES NAPLES
SABOT CHAMPIONSHIP •Second-year coach Larry Hirst believes his Sailors
have the ingredients for a CIF Playoff team after some
encouraging signs from last summer's competition.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -When
second-year Newport Harbor
High boys basketball coach La.ny
Hirst opened his own Surf City
Classic summer tournament
against Mater Dei, most likened it
to an appointment with Dr. Jack
Kevorkian.
The Sailors, however, battled
the Orange County kingpins to a
standoff late into the final period,
providing a
spark for what
Hirst believes
could be a Har-
bor resur-
gence.
·Mater Dei
wound up win-
ning by nine
points, or so,
but that woke
our kids up and
Pulido got them
believing they
had the potential to play with the
top teams in the county,• said
Hirst, whose program now bears
his stamp, after a 6-20 season of
transition.
•0ur coaching staff is very
optimistic about this season. Our
kids have shown a level of inten-
sity you can't coach. We think that
can carry down to all levels of the
program. We had a pretty good
summer, and we're anxious to
continue that success.•
Much of the Sailors' success
will hinge on senior Danny Puli-
do, who started as a freshman, but
missed all but one game of the
last two campaigns. A 6-foot-5,
220-pounder, Pulido is comfort·
able bringing the ball up, shoot-
ing threes, or banging in the
paint. His competitive fire, how-
ever, may be more valuable than
his ample athletic talent.
•He's probably one of the most
intense kids to have gone through
Newport's basketball program,•
Hirst said of the three-year foot-
ball standout, who hopes to delay
his transition to the hardwood
long enough to earn his second
CIF championship ring in foot-
ball.
Joining Pulido in what Hirst
terms a solid nucleus, is sopho-
more point guard Matt Jameson,
a varsity starter the latter hall of
last season, and second-team All-
Sea View League pick Peter Cun-
ningham, a sharpshooting senior
guard.
Jameson, for whom many are
projecting a collegiate future, has
matured physically and competi-
tively, according to Hirst, who
entrusts him with running the
sh ow, while also adding scoring
punch.
"With bis growth and develop-
ment, people won't recognize
Matt from last year,• Hirst said of
l'HI \II\\
Jameson, who averaged seven
points per game in his baptism of
fire and honed his game against
elite competition in the summer.
Cunningham, a three-point
specialist. averaged 9.8 points per
game in league, and will once
again be an offensive catalyst.
Adam Hearlson, a 6-6 sopho-
more, will be counted upon to
learn quickly in the post, while
returner Trevor Thissel, a 6-4
junior, physical 6-0 senior Greg
Wertman, 6-1 junior returner
Scott Archbold and 6-2 freshman
Dustin Illingworth will battle for
Hirst's favor and corresponding
playing time. ,
Hirst said he has altered the
offensive and defensive approach
"180 degrees,• shelving last sea-
son 's freelance offensive
approach for a more structured
attack.
-we're going to slow down
and concentrate on the half-court
game," Hirst explained. •we'll be
more structured on offense and
more disciplined on defense.
And, everyone's role will be more
defined.•
Hirst said Pulido's season-end-
ing shoulder injury, Jameson's
midseason arrival from the lower
level, and the double-edged
adjustment surrounding his first
season at the helm, made his
debut season a constant juggling
act.
"With a year underneath us,
we're much more capable of step-
ping up when someone gets
injured," said Hirst, who will also
enjoy the advantage of teaching
on campus, after commuting from
a junior-high teaching posjtion
last season.
Hirst believes a holiday trip to
Newport, R.I. will only strengthen
team chemistry, as well as signal
future Tars that
Hirst plans to
add first-class
perks while
attempting to
stabalize a pro-
gram that bas
not won a play-
off game since
1992.
Seniors Matt
Ceiley, Scott
Gaiber, Pat Cunningham
Kenney and
Frank Ruelas
will provide depth, as the Tars
attempt to earn a guaranteed
playoff spot in Division ill-AA. by
craclcing the six-team Sea View's
top three.
wThat's our goal,• Hirst said. "I
think Woodbridge iS in a class by
itself, but we're one of about four
other teams that can compete for
the second-place spot. It may
come down to who stays healthy
and who's clicking.•

In a cl8B8ic battle between declar-

cloee t.o finding a way t.o make the
three-no-trump contract. Only a

At this vulnerability, East had a
dead-minimum weak two-heart

pass North's takeout double. but

Much as West would have liked

ruined decla.rer'a dream• by exiting

declarer could do wu win in dum-

spades and caah two diamonda, but
then had to surrender the setting
trick t.o East's ace of heart8.
