Coast, developed by the Irvine
Co., and Newport Ridge, just to
the north, border Corona del Mar.
The groups of custom home
lots that cling to the bills just
south of Corona del Mar beckon
young families with big incomes
with their promise of paradise.
Those groups of high-cost
homes also beckon some Ne w-
port Beach city officials with the
promise of property taxes. The
City Council will start considering
whether to annex the Newport
Coast/Ridge area in January.
Most of these potential New-
port Beach citizens are well-off
parents -couples who buy their
children tugh-tech potty training
seats, Baby Gap cloO)es and
sneakers with hghts on them.
John and Rebecca Dewey
moved into their two-story sand-
stone-colored home -which
boasts a giant front picture win-
dow, a three-car garage and a
hilltop view of the ocean -more
than two yea.rs ago. And they
have yet to feel like they were
alone.
They moved into The Pointe at
the same time as all their neigh-
bor<; did -so they all went
through finishing theu homes,
landscaping theu yMds and deco-
ratmg theu rooms together.
A year later, when the Deweys
had their first child, sue other cou-
ples had babies within the next
two months. "It's a baby factory
around here," says John. 37. a
consumer finance consultant.

diagnosed their son, Grant, now
1, with a tumor in his lower spine,
their neighbors made sure they
knew they weren't alone.
•0ur friends in the neighbor-
hood organized a whole support
network,.. says Rebecca, a 30-
year-old who used to work in
banking and real estate and now
concentrates on raising Grant and
doing philanthropic work.
Grant eventually underwent
an operation and came out OK.
But in the interim, the Deweys'
neighbors came out of their spa-
cious homes in droves to offer
support.
John, who grew up in the
Monterey Bay area, calls The
Pointe the "ultimate family neigh-
borhood.•
MWe know everyone in the
e ntire neighborhood," he says.
"We go to dinner with probably
10 or 12 of the couples. It's kind-of
like little towns of the '50s."
Rebecca, a Dallas native, cites
the cleanliness and safety as what
drew them to the neighborhood.
She says she and John knew they
wanted to raise their children
there.
They say they really don't care
whether their neighborhood ever
becomes part of Newport Beach.
"We haven't really had a defi-
ciency of service, .. John says. He
adds, however, that he'd like hav-
ing city police protection instead
of relying on the county Sheriff's
Department.
+ + +
E ach of the area's subdivi-
sions functions as a self-con-
tained village. The Pointe,
for example, sustains its own full
social calendar, with most activi-
ties focusing on the children who
saturate its safe, quiet streets.
On Halloween, there's an
annual parade, when the children
march around a cul-de-sac for
about a half hour as moms and
dads shoot video. Thanksgiving
brings touch football games.
Christmas means a progressive
party. On the Fourth of July,
there's bike decorating.

Along with antllock brakes and air-

detect wheel slippage, some traction

LOS ANGELES -USC fans

COSTA MESA
There's nowhere to go but
up for Costa Mesa High's
boys soccer team this sea-
son.
Though the goals are
slightly different than its
cross-town rival (Estancia),
which expects to win the
Pacific Coast League and
possibly the CIF Southern
Section Division IV, Costa
Mesa is still in the bunt for
a good time.
"We don't care about
winning, we ca.re about
the kids having a good
time," Mesa Coach Mike
Dunn said. "We're not
going to beat Estancia or
Laguna Hills, but we have
reasonable expectations."
The Mustangs, 1-17-2 '
overall last year (0-8-2 in PCL), return 10 players from
last year, including five starters, led by senior goal.keep-"
er Carlos Loza, considered one of the best in Orange ....
County.
"Carlos was just being pummeled game after game -•
after game last year," Dunn said. "He had to have 10
saves a game last year, because we were so weak in the " back." -
Even though Costa Mesa didn't win a PCL contest -;
last season, Loza was voted second-team all-league.
Brad Wayman from Estancia's championship team wa.S
the league's first-team goalie. ,
"I think talent-wise, nobody's even close to Carlos, ·:
but that's not taking anything away from Brad," Dunn
said. "Carlos was third-team. All-CIF Division m as a
sophomore, but last year he didn't make All-CIF, and a
big part of that was the dismal season we had in terms
of wins and losses.
"He probably had more saves than anyone in Orange
County, because our team was so poor.·
Along with Dunn's 10 returnees are seven athletes _;
who played in Mesa's soccer program in the past, but
didn't participate last year for one reason or another.
Mesa had only three seniors on its roster a season ago.
"We had never had a frosh-soph team, and last year
we had 10 guys on the varsity to make sure we had a~
frosh-sopb," said Dunn, a second-year coach. "This year ::
we had over 60 people out, which means we can actual-
ly substitute in games, we'll have seniors {12) and we'll
have three full teams in the program. So it'll be differ-~
ent." .
Doesn't get any better than that. Dunn's rejuvenated
forces will be tested in a mighty way against perennial
Orange County power Fountain Valley on Wednesday
in the season lid-lifter. :r
In addition to l...O'Za, Costa Mesa bas four other return-
ing starters: Seniors Juan Escobar (center/midfielder),
Eric Solis (sweeper) amf.Jose Cabalero (midfielder) and
sophomore David 1hm (defender). Escobar is considered ~
Costa Mesa's second-best player.
Other returning varsity players include senior mid-·
fielders Marcelo Martinez and Ignatio Toscano, junior
forwards Christian Alvarez and Adam Dixon. and junior
defender Mario Mendoza. Toscano, Alvarez, Dixon and
Mendoza are slated to start.
Seven other players, who didn't play last-year but ,
spent time in the program previously, should make an ':
impact for Costa Mesa this season.
Junior midfielder Reuben Gonzalez and senior fop
ward Christian Perruzca, two of the seven, are even pen. "'
ciled in to start. ,,.
Seniors Paulo Vaca (defender), Israel Barrera
(defender), Eddie Sanchez (midfielder), Steven Parades
(defender) and Gilberto Ayala (midfielder) are all con-:
sidered positive additions to this year's squad, according
to Dunn.

The mi.stakes lies in assuming

"People get sidetracked by

there's no advantage to burning

The only way to lose more
