NEWPORT BEAC H -What
looked to be a messy battle for the
vice mayor's spot came out cleanly
in favor of Councilman Tom

unsurprising vote put Jan Dehay in
the mayor's seat.
Councilwoman Norma Glover,
who was campaigning for the vice

She said a week ago that while
soliciting her colleagues' support,
newly elected councilmen John

they wouldn't feel comfortable
putting two women in charg e of the
city. Both me n denied making such
statements.
Glover has also Qeen pushing for
a new mayoral selection process in
which council members would
rotate into the position, saying it
would eliminate politicking.

By Susan Deemer. Dail-/ Pilot
COSTA l'vtESA -Disappointed par-
ents, whose children attend the Grace Hoa~. Child Care Cei,ter, and several
teachers th~e will ID(!et Friday to discuss
how they can keep the non-profit facility
and its existing program from disappear-
ing.
"It's a quality center and I hope the
community will get involveg in trying to
keep it open,• said parent Kim Huynen.
The center, operated by the Assistance
League of Newport-Mesa for 24 years,
sent letters to parents Nov. 25 announcing
that it will close the center on Jan. 31.
. "We are trying to save the school and
the program," said parent Carolyn
McHardy of Costa Mesa.
For the past 10 years, the center bas
continued to function despite a severe
deficit that grew this year to $50,000
annually. A final decision to sell the school
was made by the league Nov. 19, said
Carol Cowden, president of the Newport-'
Mesa league.
·It's just too much df a drain on us at

funds, as one reMc>n why the leagu~ has
been struggling. Frustrated parents say they were not
aware the center was having financial dif-·
ficulties. They want the league to official-
ly list the site for sale so they can help find
a buyer for the school that will keep the
existing daycare program and staff.
Huynen. a psychologist who special-
izes in servin.g people with developmental
disabilities, enrolled her two children in
the program several months ago. Huynen
said she chose the program over others in
Orange County and pays the full tuition
for her children because it is so special.
out because they are finding other
schools,• said Sarah Guggenheim, assis-
tant director at the center.
The league, which is member of the
National ASSistance League, is designed
to help needy fammes. Only four out of
100 of the league's chapters operate day-
care facilities such as the Grace Hoag cen-
ter, Cowden said.
Locally, the chapter has operated since
'1941 providing services primarily for chil-
dren, including low-cost dental programs
and schol.8rships for high school and col-
lege students. The daycare center opened
in 1972 an<t expanded in 1986.
Although the daycare facility on
Orange Avenue will be sold, Cowden said
a task force committee was formed in late
November to address the needs of some
famm~ in need of service. One possibility
could be operating a smaller daycare pro-
gram at the Assistance League's Fairview
Road site, she said.
The Grace Hoag Cott.age, where the
daycare facility is housed, was named
after the mother of the late George Hoag
II, who apparently helped the league pur-
chase the facility in 1972. Hoag built the
home for bis mother initially, then con-
verted it into a girls home in the 1940s. Cowden said other league programs,
including Operation School Bell that pro-
vides clothing for more than 400 needy
children, are self-supporting. She cited
the more than 270 charities in the Orange
County area, all vying for philanthropic

•I understand from what I've
learned about criminals and
gang members that their stan-

In the last year of hil life,
Duke lnexplicab!y phoned one
Soturday mornlng and invited
me to come along as b.tJ guest
on a daylong cruise of the Wild
Gooee-a story I've told before,
but not tn this space. A lot of
hil high-rolling friends were.
aboard, along with an insur-
ance inspector and his wife. All
of us were treated with equal
attention and courtesy by the
host
About mid-day, I found
myself watcbing Duke playing
backgammon on deck with one
of his friends, and it reminded
me of bis movie set regimen.
He kept a constant chess game
going in his dressing room with
his personal photographer, who
-from my observation -always
lost. When Duke wanted to see
someone, be brushed the game
aside; when he didn't, he got
suddenly absorbed in chess.
I had observed this over the
years with some bemusement.
and I said to him, almost idly,
as I watched the backgaipIDon
game: •Do you ever play chess
with someone you can't beat?•
He gave me that long, slow,
go-for-your-'ams look and said,
"Do you think you can beat
me?" '
I allowed as how l thought I
could, and he swept the
backgammon pieces off the
boanl and growled, •Stt
down.·
We played three of the
fastest games In chess history.
He played the way he rode a
hone, at a full gallop with the
reins tn his teeth and fb1ng
with both hands. He won two
out of three games and went
beck to backgammon mollified,
his honor restored.
He died nine months later,
and U you were around here
then, you may remember the
Draconian measures that were
taken to prevent public knowl-
edge of his burying place.
His funeral was held at 5
a.m. in a nearby Roman
Catholic church, and his burial
took place'behind cemeterr-
gates locked against the hordes
of reporters and photographers
trying to get in.
When they did, they found
that a half-dozen graves had
been opened and flowers "
placed around them to tum the
location of the Wayne grave
into a guessing game. And it
still is.
Such anonymity in death
certainly hasn't canie<tover to
his cpntinuing -even growing
-visibility to the American
public. So let's tip one this holi-
day season to the Duke: still
Newport Beach's most visible
invisible citizen.

up enough elusive
Sailor miscues to term the opening eight min-
utes a slow start.
ul don't know what the stats looked like,
but I thought we started a little slowly,~ said
Hirst, whose squad smothered visiting Ver-
dugo Hills for a 66-34 triumph Tuesday in the
pool-play opener of the Daily Pilot lip-off
Classic.
"I don't know if it was first-game jitters or
what,· continued Hl.fst with a straight face.
•(The Dons) tried to beat us with their speed,
starting five guards, and I think their quick-
ness bothe.red us a little.·
Nothing much seemed to bother the
Sailors, who shot 50% for three quarters -
when they pulled their starters for good -
corrunitted their first turnover with eight sec-
onds left in the first quarter, and played near-
ly five minutes of defense before Verdugo
netted a field goal.
Through three quarters. the Tars hit 22 of
44 field-goal attempts, won the turnover war,
19-7, and built a 53-17 cushion, limiting Ver-
dugo to 6 of 28 from the field.
The hosts upped the lead to 38 points,
before garbage time allowed Verdugo Hills to
make things respectable.
The visitors' scoring output was the fewest
points allowed by Harbor in 70 games, dating
back to a 56-33 win over Dana Hills in the
1994 Daily Pilot Coast Classic.
·(Peter) Cunningham's outside shooting (a
trio of first-period three-pointers) sparked us
early, but it wasn't until we got our defense
squared away that things started flowing
offensively,· continued Hirst.
To the untrained eye, it was dilficult to tell
when this shift occurred, as four Sailors scored
in double figures and all but one of the 10-
man roster (minus football standouts Danny
Pulido and Greg Wertman) scored. •
Freslunan Dustin Illingworth came off the
bench to score 13 and collect eight rebounds.
while 6-foot-6 sophomore Adam Hearlson
joined the youth movement with 12 points
and eight boards.
Cunningham. a senior, finished with 11
points, five rebounds and three steals, while
sophomore point guard Matt Jameson had 10
points, six boards, five assists and three steals.
"I thought Jameson controlled the tempo
for us," Hirst said.
Senior Matt Ceiley hit all three shots from
the field and both foul shots for his eight
points, outsconng the Dons' pair of scoring
leaders, who each tallied six.
Verdugo hit 7 of 13 fourth-quarter shots
from the field to bnng their shooting percent-
age to a cool 31.7 for the evening.
The Sailors host ltoy Thursday at 7:40.
