The 600-foot bndge, designed
by world-renowned landscape

meant to be a "signature piece,•

The inspiration for the bird-
like design of the bndge came
from t}J,e transformation and
movement of the loc&l land and
area itseli, Gustafson said.
"What one of the main hopes
is that it's an experience from one

An outdoor cafe also is being
considered, said James Poulsen,
who is the architectural design
lead on the pro1ect.
Besides linking all of the mall
stores, the bridge is part of a larg-

of South Coast Plaza. C.J.
Segerstrom & Sons recently
announced it would drop the
name Crystal Court to more

Long train oJ heroes_ stretches fr.o -m robbi?r: to Samoan king
I haye alway~ been a hero wor-

My family moved from Santa
Ana to Green River, Wyo., when
I was 6. Before that l don't
remember having any heroes.
However, upon rf'aching Green
River. J acquired my first real
nonest-to·God hero. He was a
train robber named Dave Gardner.
When we arrived in Green
River, Dave Gardner was making
quite a career out of robbing
Union Pacific trains, and slnce

ln-N-Out hoping to get
kids into books
In-N-Out Burger in coopera-
tion with selected Orange, River-
side and San Bernardino county
libraries, is launching a Food lo~.
Thought program for children.
·until April 9, children cnn go to
a participating lihrnry and pick up
a free bookmark. The child then
must read five ooolu> and bru1g U1
the bookmark to an ln·N-Out
Burger for a free hamburger or
an uncle who was a train robber.
My family attempted to deny
any relationship with Dave Gard-
ner, hut as fai;t as they denied
him. l was trumpeting my rela-
tionship Wlth him at the top of
my shrill little voice. ·
Well, 1 must admit -grudg-
ingly -that Dave Gardner was
not my uncle. Still, after all those
years, every time I see a rerun of
•Butch Cassidy and the Sun-
dance Kid" -wbtch is every
limo it comes on television, ·
Which in tum 1s fairly often -I
feel a kinship with Butch and
Sundance when they blow up-a
Union Pacific baggage car.
As I grew older, my list of
heroes grew. It is a somewhat
macho list, made up as it is of
warriors, adventwers, explorers,
conquerors, fighters and a few
rascals and eccentrtc:s, with a
woeful lack of women, scholar.;,
5tudents, socntists and pundits
However, in my defense, I must
point.out that my list contains no
criminals, at least no criminall>
robbing Uruon Pacihc tram.s.
Maybe that was b<"cause I could·
n't find another train robber
named Gardner.
All of which brings to me to
my current hero, an eurly
Samoan king named Tupwvao.
Here I mwot digress and descnbe
