Sprinklers save 10-story building from· fire
•Authorities say a blaze

NEWPORT BEACH -An
dUtomatic sprinkler system was
credited with saving a 10-story
building from destruction when
a fire broke out early Tuesday
morning.
The two-alarm fire, which
began under a cubicle on the
third floor, was confined to the
muned.iate office area by spnn-
klers.
"There u no question the
spririkler system in this instance
saved this building from severe
damage,• said Lt. John Blauer,
community relations officer for
the Newport Beach Fire and
Marine Department. ·we could
have had all 10 floors involved."
The blaze began at about
2:20 a.m. at offices occupied by
Uruted nue Co. in the 1300
block of Dove Street Fire Mar-
shal Dennis Lockard said a
small space heater that was
tucked underneath a desk and
left running igruted a cloth-cov-
ered partition and created
heavy smoke and flames.
However. the fire was con-
tained under the work!';tation
because its partitions shielded
the flames from the spnnkler
system.
•1t was sunply so hot under
the desk, it caught on fire,"
Blauer said. •Tue fire was com-
~g up the back of the computer
station, but the sprinkJen; were
able to rut the ftre in exposed
areas."
When firefighters arrived,
they smelled a faint odor of
smoke. They searched the
first two floors and found
nothmg. When they entered
an ofhce on the third floor
from d stairwell, they noticed
heuvy smoke building up in·
the hallway.
More than 30 firefighters
from N~wport Beach. Costa

The hre was extinguished
within an hour.
Damage to the o'rf1cc was
