The suspect, arrested near the scene of the Anaheim Avenue homicide after. ·a sec- ond attack in the parking lot of a fitness club, has given police th e name Omar Coyotzin Rivera. Front row seats to the birth· of American comedy theater D uring the 1930s and 1940s B.T. (Before Television) Los Angeles, while clearly not the entertainment capitol of the world, was a rich source of live entertainment. First, there was burlesque, the bawdy format from which all American theater comedy arose. There were two burlesque the- aters, both on Main Street, the Burlesque and the Burbank. There such immortals in the bur- lesque field as Joe Yule, father of Mickey Rooney, could be seen, baggy pants, seltzer bottle, inflat- ed turkey bladder, together with a statuesque blonde with an ample body. There was alwajs consider- able leering and shooting seltzer down the front of each other's pants, so it wasn't dignified. It was funny, raunchy, vulgar and earthy. If you wanted something more refined there was vaudeville at the Orpheum. There, for 50 cents one could see such immor- tal stand-up comedians as Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Fred Allen, Ed Wynn, George Bu.ms and Gracie Allen and the Ritz Broth- ers. You wanted musical comedy? Go to the Mason or Biltmore the- ater and see such musical come- dies as No No Nannette or Coconuts with the Marx Brothers. This also cost 50 cents, although for that money one sot in the sec- ond balcony from where one could see the tops of the heads of tlie entertainers plus the bottoms of the dancers' shoes as they did their high kicks. You want music? The greatest bands of the swing era-Good- man, Miller, both Dorseys, Shaw -they all played at the Palomar with the extra added attraction of the Hudson Metsgar Girls, a troupe that danced between sets. If you wanted to hear a black band try either the Dunbar Hotel on Central Avenue or Frank THE VERDICT robe rt gardner Sebastian's Cotton Club in Cul- ver City. And all over town were little night spots much like New York featuring great names in the jazz world. A well-known musi-. cian would get a few sidemen and open a small nightclub - Wingy Malone, Louis Prima and Keely Smith, Louis Armstrong, Jesse Stacy, Yank Lawson, Fats Waller, Stuff Smith, Meade Lux Lewis, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo and Cootie Williams come to mind. For snooty nightclubs where you could see famous movie stars in the audience, try Ciro's or the Mocambo. But for real gut-busting fun, try Slapsie Maxie's. Slapsie was the retired light heavyweight boxing champion, and he sur- rounded himself with such stars as Cully Richards and Jackie Gleason. I remember sitting one night at Slapsie's while Jack Ben- ny and Harry Ritz of the Ritz Brothers sat at the next table and tried to get the other one to laugh at each other's jokes. Neither ever cracked a smile while the rest of us who were listening were rolling on the floor. I think my favorite was Billy Gray's Bandbox. This was straight out of the Catskill's. The Yiddish jokes came fast and furi- o~. Billy Gray was the whole show.
