woman who was stabbed to
death only feet from her

returning from Mass.
The suspect, arrested near
the scene of the Anaheim

Donna J acobson left Mass at
St. Joachim Church around

her Toyota Camry parked out-

husband, Michael, was watch-

the attack. He said he heard
nothing. .
Jacobson .died of multiple
stab wounds in what police
originally thought was an
attempted carjacking but now
appears to be a botched rob-

After allegedly slaying
Jacobson, the man reportedly
attacked another woman one
block away, on the other side of
Lions Park, as she was getting

police Sgt. George Yezbick.
The second victim is Ann
Jorunn Johansen, 4 7, of Tustin.
The knife-wielding attacker
grabbed her and tried to hold
her, but she broke free, Yezbick

Though the hotel chain's own-

is exploring other uses for the site

don't want to wait any longer for

skeptical residents and city offi-

The Ayreses, longtime Newport

city to approve using the Lower

hotel. After meeting-with re.$i-

idea because of traffic and envi-

Los Angeles, while clearly

First, there was burlesque, the

American theater comedy arose.
There were two burlesque the-

There such immortals in the bur-

Mickey Rooney, could be seen,

ample body.
There was alwajs consider-
able leering and shooting seltzer
down the front of each other's
pants, so it wasn't dignified. It
was funny, raunchy, vulgar and
earthy.
If you wanted something more
refined there was vaudeville at
the Orpheum. There, for 50
cents one could see such immor-
tal stand-up comedians as Jack
Benny, Milton Berle, Fred Allen,
Ed Wynn, George Bu.ms and
Gracie Allen and the Ritz Broth-
ers.
You wanted musical comedy?
Go to the Mason or Biltmore the-
ater and see such musical come-
dies as No No Nannette or
Coconuts with the Marx Brothers.
This also cost 50 cents, although
for that money one sot in the sec-
ond balcony from where one
could see the tops of the heads of
tlie entertainers plus the bottoms
of the dancers' shoes as they did
their high kicks.

the Hudson Metsgar Girls, a

C OSTA MESA -Stunned

Estanda High girls soccer coach

Eagles ba to e p ayoffs.
Estanda, which came up short
of a postseason berth a· season
ago after finishing 3-5-2 in the
Paci.tic Coast League, lost four
varsity players (including two
starters) because of the inddent
last June, in which players w~re
reprimanded for allegedly
conswning beer in a hotel room
duting a sununer townament in
Sanfa Barbara.
Estanda reached the CIF
Southern Section post.season four
years in a row from 1991 to 1994,
winning PCL championships in
'91 and '93. But the Eagles
ended fourth in the PCL last
season and didn't make the
playoffs for the second straight
year.
With a flock of enthusiastic
freshmen and a shift from CIP
Division ll to Division m, the
Eagles feel they have nothing to
lose and everything to gain when
the PCL campaign kicks off in
January. Laguna Hills should be
the best team in the PCL with

That's OK. Hopefully, we'll catch
them off guard."

Sailors' reins as the third
head coach in three years.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
N EWPORT BEACH -As
a new era begins for
Newport Harbor Higb's
girls soccer program under
first-yea.r coach Justina Gibble,
this season also marks the start
of WJN -Without Jill Nelsen.
While an abundance of
optimism flows through the
program, the reality is that
Newport Harbor must find a
forward to replace Nelsen's
offense.
Junior Kyle McNichols and
sophomore Shawn Talley are
tough, durable and play with an
attitude, according to Gibble,
and they could form a strong
tandem up front to supplement
a solid defense.
It's ~matter now of gaining
playoff acceptance in a league
(Sea View) expected to be won
by Santa Margarita.
"We're all real anxious to get
into league play, because we
think we've really improved from
last year and we want to see how
we can do against teams we lost
to last year," said Gibble, who
wasn't around to see the Sailors
finish 6-8-7 overall, 4-4-2 in the
Sea View last winter.
Gibble, the school's third girls
soccer coach in three years,
replaces Dean Laird, a walk-on
who stayed for only a year in his
first head coaching assignment.
It is also the initial head job
for Gibble, a former standout at
Monmouth College, a Division I
power in West Long Branch, N.J.
She was also a graduate assistant
there in 1991, a year before
moving to Calif omia.
Gibble will give it the old
college try With a dozen

whom were starters, led by

school's celebrated football
quarterback, Josiah.
"Jordan's one of the most
athletic players we have,~ Gibble
said. "U we needed to, we could
put her in the field, and she
would be real smart out there."
Senior defenders Amy Lear
and Melissa Pomeroy, senior
midfielder Andrea Sparrow,
junior midfielder Taylor Yurada
and sophomore defender Brooke
Ramson are also returning
starters.
•Brooke is probably one of our :
most talented players," Gibble :
said. "She has-great skill and •
great vision."
McNicho.ls, a field hockey
player who competes With a lot
of energy, and fellow juniors
-Brittany Thacker, Heidi Eimers
and Meghann Allard, all
mid.fielders, are returning
lettermen .
Senior halfback Courtney
Cisek and sophomore goalie
Devon Burlingham are also
varsity players from last season.
Cisek is still getting physical
therapy on a bad back and is not
expected to return until January.
Among the top newcomers
are Talley and freshman
defender Jennifer Orr, who will
start.
"Shawn and Kyle are a great
team up front, they work real
well together," Gibble said.
"Shawn's probably one of our
toughest players. She keeps
improving."
Saddleback Tournament set to
start Dec. 26.
Unfortunately, if you want to
pop over to Mustang land and
get a look at this talented bunch
you'll have to wait until Jan. 15.
That's when they play their first
home game against Aliso Niguel.
However, you might want to
mark your calendar for that one.
It should be one of the better
games in the Pacific Coast
League this season.
Rezkalah bas coached this
group the past two 2112 years at
Costa Mesa Junior High and bas
nothing but high hopes.
"They've played at least 100
games together,• be said. "We
could win 20 games. We played
most of the teams on our
schedule during the summer and
fared really well.•
Rezkal.ah figures Aliso Niguel
and Laguna Hills should have
pretty good team along with
Estanda and University.
"Aliso and Laguna Hills will
give them a run,• be said.
