H e said the district was lookmg al whdt it considered to be a math class that ninth-grade students would attend. so they had picked certain classes by subject. About hdlf of the students ta•k.ing the three class!'?s eligible for class- stze reduction are not ninth· ~Jrdders, but they would receive the benefit. At hrst. i was amdzed that the ninth-grade reduction progrdm would not benefit some ninth- graders and would give other students potentinlly three years of benefit, if they spent ninth, I 0. und 11th grade getting through those classes. But then, upon ' reflection, I thought 1f a student hasn't passed Algebra l by 11 ll'I yrdde, maybe it 1s more tmpor· tdnl for that student to have a lower cldl>s-size raUo. They had half of the neighborhood packing the board room, representing all of ~e kids and adults that make the school so special. It was invigorating to hear all of the positive things happening al Adams School. The winners of the bookmark contest -Gabriella Suarez, a first-grader from Paularino; Rebecca Brown, a third-grader from Kaiser; and Clementina . Anderson. a fifth-grader from Anderson School -were pre- sented to the school board at last week's meeting. They were so excited, they had trouble sitting sWl. The contest was a f11cet of the Author's f estival. I attended the district's Auth.or's Festival ldsl Thursday. The ddy began wj.th a continen· tal breakfast for the more than 35 children's duthors who were authors-in-residence for the day at the district's elementary schools. Then, the authors went· to their assig ned schools to talk to kids about w hat it's like to be an author. The schools or PTAs then provided a lunch at the school site for the authors. What a great Wijy to encou rage kids to read and to dream about a pro- fession that they might not have considered. Thanks to all of the authors. school personnel, librari- ans. and pdrents who have put in the time to mak e this a reality. The authors say that they like to come to connect with their readers. As the author of this col· 1 umn, I like to h ear what you think. whether or not you agree with my pos1llon. I need to hear other view s and be able to sup- port or change my position. I'm about ready to write a column about reconliguration .in the Estancia zone, but I need some input first. The only options besides the district's starting point I've heard discussed is leaving Estancia High Sch ool alone and making the zone's ele- mentary sch9ols aU kind.ergarten through sixth g rade. If other ideas arP floating around. please e-maLI me as soon as possible. Thanks for the help. • GAY GEISER-SANDOVAL is a Costa Mesa re~ident. Her column runs Mon- days. Just in time for Valentines! But long after USA Today stops calling, the Vanguards, who feature d solid pitching staff and quality hitting, may be >.n the hunt for a Gold@n State Athletic Conference title. "In general, I feel we have some offensive potency,• Coach Kevin Kasper said. ·Against Cal State (Los Angeles) we banged out 21 hits. Taylor has a good dnn and won the season- opening gamc> against Cal State LA. Josh Steele will be the No 2 starter and has two years of expenence pitching for sec. From there, the Van-••----• guards have some undecided spots in the rotation. Senior Donovan McReynq.lds is nursing a sore anp, but could be back by the end of the month. "Getting him involved is imPortant, • Kasper said. •He's had · some success over Ole years and his ERA was in the top 15 of the GSAC last season.• Ryan Williams and Brian Schneider also figure to start. ·- The Vanguards' middle relief should be solid and Eric Booth is the primary closer. He doesn't have much expenence 111 the role, but makes up for it in raw power. According to Kasper, a number or scouts have come to look at Boot}.\ as a pitcher, surprising to some since Sooth is also the starting right fielder and cleanup hitter. "He was All-GSAC at first base last year," Kasper said. "He has a good arm and hits the ball really hard.• . , Booth moved to right field to m11ke a spot for Newton, who returned to action with a . . double at Cal State LA on operung day. Dent, a converted catcher, has a good arm and is continuing to make his release quicker Jason Murrietta, a 22-year-old sophomore, and Terrik Clark give SCC a solid double-play combination and both have been hitting well of late. Matt Lewallen will start at third base and Ryan Dambach is the front-runner for the left field job. Adam Steckler had a good {all and is expected to hit for power in the DH $lot. If it all com.es together like Kasper believes it can, the Vangua.Ids should conte,nd for the title in the GSAC's first 30-game season. . • Jt's just a competitive league,~ Kasper" said.
