COSTA MESA -The City
Council was receptive to some
Freedom Homes residents'
requests to rethink a city commit-
tee's decision aga4tst removing
e Canyon 'Park trees that are
blocking their ocean views.
The eucalyptus trees, which
were planted in Can yon Pa.rk'
about a decade ago and have not
been trimmed since then, have
been chipping away at rcs1denb'
views of the ocean, sunsets and
Catalina Island.
The Parks, Recreation Fadh·

fear very often makes people apologetic.
To pass a bond issue, the school board
must very clearly identify the nerd Peo-
ple have to be informed of whc1t the
money 1s gomg to be used for. The
board should be very posit:lve and
upbeat about what they are doing for
the unprovement of the district.
In the late 1950s and early '60s, when
there were mclJly bond issues, a doctoral
dissertation at USC studied bond elec-
tions to hnd out why elections passed
and how 1t was done. It found that the
way to pdss a bond e lection wdS to iden-
tify those 1n opposition and be swe not
to alienate them. More unportant WdS to
tdcntify those in favor and be sure they
voted. It seemed better to be sure that
all those m favor voted than to try to win
over thos<' in opposition.
Today things may be a bit more
oph.\;~tlct1led than the pa11t. I am sure,.

Bridge debate is a 'plague'
that won't go away
In regards to the question of whether
a bndge should connect Huntington
Beach and Costa Mesa, I figured we had
put this lo rest and driven a stake
through its heart some years ago ("New-
port impassive toward bridges,• Jan. 27;
•Bndges divide city residents,• Jan. 28).
ll apparently has risen from the grave
and is loose upon the land once more. It
is a plague on our house.
ls there notlung that can convmce
those empowered that, for all the possi-
ble profit it might produce for 19th
Street commerce, the permanent dam·
age it will do to the residential areas
east of Newport Boulevard will be a
bllght on our cities forever? I for one will
not. forget the number of near misses
caused by "racers• sailing across 19th to
Dover Drive. You have to know that
Mariners Park next to the grammar
school is beset will little children who, ·
frequently unmindful of such things,
dash out in the street to retrieve a way-
ward ball or run across to their waiting
parents on the opposite side.
Should a major bridge be installed,
clearly the diverted and increased traffic
now will either cause an egregious bot-
tleneck at the intersection of 19th Street
and Newport Boulevard or will cause
the city planners to resurrect the old and
laid-to-rest plan to widen 19th and
Dover. We don't want this, don't need
this and will fight any such plan to the
hitter end.
EWSR.WAYNE
I'm writing about uie bridge crossing
at 19th Street. As a homeowner along
West 19th Street, I am opposed to this
bridge.
However, for the various groups that
wdnt traffic to flow from Huntington
Beach for their convenience, let's sug-
gest a bridge at West 17th Street. There
are not many homes along 17th Street,
and it goes directly into major business-

And why should Gisler become a
freeway so that Huntington Beach can
have a shortcut to the San Dlego Free·

Mesa Verde to the San Diego Freeway
down GISier is already very busy. Resi-
dents can barely get out of their dnve-•

ruts, Wlth all the children who cross over

To avoid all Uus traffic, I will some·
times go to Adams Avenue to the San

Unfortunately, everyone still uses Coun-

We certainly don't want a Gisler free-

'1Tam travel was not very com-
fortable m those days, particular-

in a big cloud of codl smoke.
Thus, all the windows were
sealed shut, and there WdS no wr

Al the end of the tntin was the
, observation car At the end of the
observation car was an opcn-dir
plaUonn I dearly wanted to nde
on that open-atr plaUorm. Shortly
after we left Omaha, I walked up
the platlonn at a stop and was
gazing longingly at it when th~
obscrvution car porter saw me
and said, "Kid, you want to ndc
on that platfonn?" I nodded. I le
said, "Hop aboard. Ain't.nobody
else wants to nde out there:"
As we sped along, I found out
why no one else wanted to ride
back there. lt was windy, smoky,
and clouds of dust and cinders
came up from the roadbed.
Needless to say, 1 became qwtc
dirty. When we emerged from
tunnels, l must have looked like
the end man from a minstrel

· After my expt'rience m Oma-

we pulled into <;alt Lake City,
but 1t was a much better experi-

me.
Los Angeles was something of
a chore. The Union Paethc sta-

drunks and derelicts.
However, something nice
happened to me in Los Angeles.
When l got off the train, I gue s I
looked pretty lonesome. One of
the porters saw me and asked
me where I was going. I said I
was going to the Pacilic Electnc
station He said he was gomg
there too because he lived in
Watts where all the black people
lived in those days. So he took
me by the hand and led me
through all those drunks, and
when we got to the Pacific Elcc:-
tnc station, he showed me where
to buy my tickets and where lo
get on the train.
With J!lY last ,SO cents, I
bought a ticket to Balboa. I
hopped on \lne of those big, red
cars and rode until the conduclor
said, "Balboa, end of the line.·
J knew that my brother-10-law,

A man weanng an apron

Dick's brother-in·ldW." He said,
"Dick's place is across the street.
You ow.e me a nickel."
That was my grand entrance

Oh, yes. I went to work for

His 26 goals as a senior
shattered his own single-season

preVtous career leader Jim Hlc:JCs,
who took four v8rsity seasons to
net his 34 scores from 1989-93.
But despite possessing the
courage to compete with pam,
injunes took their toll at
Princeton.
After not playmg as a

scoring with six goals and two

honorable mention All-lvy

· He tallied tow: goals m his
final four games that year, but
had offseason knee surgery to
address cartilage damage.
The surgery. however, was
only pdltlally successful, as a
youth spent darting and dashing
by defenders had deamated the
articular cartilage, which
cushions the joint's side-to-side
movement.
The deterioration made it
impossible for him to continue
playing, so he worked as an
