.Empty desks signify the reduced class sizes In some math courses at Costa Mesa High Sch~ol, where Doug Deatz works

COSTA MESA -There were as many
desks but about half as many students as
usual m Doug Deatz's math class at Costa
Mesa High School on Tuesday monung.
As part of the district's latest effort to
reduce class sizes, ninth-grade math
classes have been cut to a 20-to· 1 stu·
dent-co-teacher ratio.
"I know it looks like no one's here,"
Oeatz told his students, who were won-
dering why .so many desks were ~mpty.
•As you can tell, our class has been
reduced."
As technology plays a gieater role m
the workpldce and society, schools have
to do a better job of equipping students
with the right math skills, said math
teacher Jim Weeks.
"Every year, you reqwre more and
more math to be successful in our high·
tech world,• he said. ·
At Costa Mesa, two new mdth teachers
-DaVJd Sandifer and Harold Jasper -
were lured, and nine new math classes
have been added to takP advdnldge of
the state program, which prQvtdes an
additional $135 per student.
The district hired 10 credentialed
teachers for the class-size-reduction pro:
gram. which apply to Algebra 1, Math
Topics and Systems, and Basic Math
"We lured some real top-notch peo-
ple," Superintendent Robert Barbot said .
"I'm really pleased with the quality of
people we found.•
Costa Mesa High counselor Michael
diDonato spent much of the past few
weeks rearranging the class schedules of
about 300 students to implement the new
class sizes.· ..
Since Newport-Mesa bigb schools
already have smaller ninth-grade English
classes, the math class reduction is caus-
ing a squeeze m available classroom
space
•space is at a premiwn, • diOonato
said. "Some teachers file haVlJlg to be
more flexible in changing classrooms
through the day.•
But diDonato ·said there is evtdence
that smaller class sizes have unproved
instruction in the English department,
because teachers have been able to
spend more tune correcting papers and
working one·c;m·one with students.

Monday, which was alsO when the school
learned it has been selected by the National
Blue Ribbon Committee for a SJte visitation.
"This scbool is so wonderful it's such a gift
to be here," Munoz said. "It's truly a confir·
mation of what you expect when you walk
onto the school. The Blue Ribbon just con·
firms everything the parents, staff and slu-.

effort,•
Munoz came to Newport-Mesa from the
Ocean View School District in Huntington
Beach, where she was a teacher. She
replaced Bruce Crockard, who was promot·
cd to classified personnel director.
Already a California Distinguished
School since 1997, the kindergarten-
through-sixth-grade elementary school is
one of 269 across the nation to be selected
for a site visitation.
Blue Ribbon status is the highest honor
~towed by the federal govenunent on a
local school. It recognizes lugh academic
achievement and standards, excellent par·
cnt and community involvement, and
unique programs that inspire learning. ·
•we just received the letter yesterday,•
said AssJ.Stant Pnndpal Jane Holm. "We're
all very f?Xdted about it."
Members of the Blue Ribbon panel will
Visit tho school between Feb, 24 and April

it has been selected for a Blue Ribbon. Un·

If it is selected as a National Blue Ribbon
school, it would be only the second in the
district -Corona del Mar was selected for
the honor last year.
"We made it through the next hoop, p
Holm scud. "This isn't a guarantee that we'll
be selected for Blue Ribbon status, but they
will tell us Ul the next few months .•
Lincoln, whose 840 students make it the

tion of Bonita Canyon. ,

"It's a reflection of how we've done up to

The broadcasters of thqse

Super Bowl xx.xm . It finally
ended well after 11 p.m. that
night when the last Denver sta-

tens of thousands went the full,
bleary-eyed route. Except, that
is, for the bands of scruffy, 20-
something males who deserted
television to build bonfires in the
downtowns of Denver, Boulder,
Fort Collins and Greeley. In bit-
tersweet irony, fuel for the fires
was provided by the metro news-
papers, which dumped bundles
of "Super Bowl Extras!" onto the
streets.
The cops were actually pretty
cool, considering the beer-sotted
