It was all a lot of ado over not much You could see games at least as good almost any Sunday afternoon during the reuular sed- son. But then, those games wouldn't have four -count 'em, four -dirigibles cruii;ing the air- space above the stddium, accom- panied by banner-trailing biplanes and squadrons of heli- copters. The broadcasters of thqse games didn't get $1.6 million per 30 seconds of commercial &r time. Compared wtth years past, the commercials weren't all that great. There were omc moments of inspiration, however, that helped take one's mind off the game. Budweiser and its lizards, fr<>gs, carunes and crustaceans were espeaally ingenious. Viewed objecgvely -which, of course, nobody does around here -the Bronco colors of blue and orange are a dreadfully nox- ious combination. Even so, some two-thirds of the populace pre- pared for the game by repainting their worlds, even thelr babies. It finally ended well after 11 p.m. that night when the last Denver sta- tion turned off its Bronco · machine. I suspect that at least tens of thousands went the full, bleary-eyed route. Except, that is, for the bands of scruffy, 20- something males who deserted television to build bonfires in the downtowns of Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and Greeley. In bit- tersweet irony, fuel for the fires was provided by the metro news- papers, which dumped bundles of "Super Bowl Extras!" onto the streets. The cops were actually pretty cool, considering the beer-sotted urchins with which they had to deal. Never before have there been such hordes so desperately in need of mass testosteronec- tamies (and if that's not a me(i- ically recogruzed procedure, it should be).
