The president of The Grant Boys, a Costtt Mesa outdoor supply and

the demand for survtval gear by
customers worncd about Y2K prob-

His sales for January alone are
up 40% from last year -a surprise,

Even il nothing happens when
the millennium changes, at least
there will be a group ol people out
there who will be prepdred for an
earthquake.

Although it's unpossible to pre-
dict what will happen in 2000, the
Red Cross is approaching the Y2K
• problem as it would any other pos-
sible disaster and encourages peo-
ple to be be tter prepared, said
spokeswoman Judy Iannaccone.
Some of the precautions the Red
Cross 1s suggesting include: .
• Stocking enough cbsaster sup-
plies such as food, water and med-
ication for several days or a week
• Having extra cash on hand
• Filling car gas tanks before
Dec. 3 1, 1999
• J laVing alternative cooking

Some of the Uungs that are cbs-

a van ety of freeze-daed foods:
chicken teriyak.i, pasta pnmavera,
blueberry cheesecake; open-flame
cookware; portabJe stoves and toi-
, lets; waler bdITels; gas cans; and
other emergency gear.
Meals Ready to Eat, better
known as MREs used by the U.S.
military, are also making their way
into people's shopping bags.
Many of the Hems are usually
~ept on stock at The Grant Boys but
not in such large quantities.
The largest sale Garel has had of
urvival gear is the sale of 100 cas·
es of MREs for a family of four
Aside from the survival gear,
Garel has also seen an influx of
first-time gun buyers, so much so
that he is having trouble keepmg

The people who are coming in
for the survival gear are not your
stereotypical survivalists with the
camouflage gear, rifle over the
shoulder and dog at the side, Garel
said. They are mostly educated pro-
fessionals -dQctors, lawyers and .
computer programmers who hdve
some disposable income and want
to take precautions
The people who are buying the
survival gear also range in their
pe rception of the Y2K p roblem.

M·BOR Is the ANSWER/
TIME LINE
•July 1998 -ICI Development Co. proposes to replace Harbor
Center, the oldest shopping complex in the city, with a SSS mil-
lion retail center anchored by The Home Depot and luckys
supermarket .
• August 1998 -Dozens of residents speak against the design
of the center and ICI is sent back to the drawing board by the
Planning Commission.
• September 1998 -ICI holds community meetings and pro-
poses Hgood neighbor measures," which Include enclosing a
loading dock,·and offering immediate neighbors centralized air
conditioning and dual-pane windows.
. -The Planning Commission votes 4-1, with Linda Dixon dis-
senting, to approve the project. which has more than SO condi-
tions attached to it. Residents talk about appealing.
-Councilwoman Heather Somers files an appeal of the Plan·
ning Commission decision so that it can go to the City Council.
•October 1998-The City Council votes 4-1,.with Somers vot-
ing no, to uphold the Planning Commission's decision.
-Resident Orio Paff files a request for rehearing.
• Novembet-1998-The City Council denies Paff's request for
a rehearing. .
-Neighbors of Harbor Center is formed, and the group and
Paff hire an attorney.
~ A petition is filed in Superior Court challengjng the city's
decision and calling for a full environmental impact report.
•February 1999 -A settlement is reached between th~ par-
ties.
"We were not out to sidetrack this
development. Wt just wonted to be
sure tbo1 the. impacts would not be
detrimental to the community."

The agreement still needs to
be put in writing for approval by
the City Council, Nixon said.
For the most pa.rt, all parties
were glad the matter could be set-

"The notion of wanting to be a
good neighbor is very sincere,•
Bell said.
The settlument concludes a
lengthy process . of public hear·
