Entertainment Newpon Beach/Costa Mesa Daily Pilot THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1996 A11 Director, actress selected as Man and Woman of Year • EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the last in a series of columns reviewing the year in local theater. By Tom Titus T hey work less than a mile from one another -one in a nationally recognized two-theater complex, the other in a struggling mom and pop operation where the talent out- weighs the wherewithal. Both have been around this area for over two decades, con- tributing their talents to the bet- terment of local theater. And both possess extremely positive attitudes to augment their ample supplies of energy and ambition. This year, they made the moves that resulted in taking their careers to the next level, while remaining decidedly local commodities. They are Mario Lescot and Debbie Grattan, the Daily Pilot's man and woman of the year in theater. Lescot is the artistic director and driving force behind the Theater District, the 3-year-old independent theater behind the Lab Anti-Mall at 2930 Bristol St.in Costa Mesa. Grattan's cur- rent employment address is just up the street at 655 Town Center Drive -South Coast Repertory - where she's finally landed after two decades of excelling in com- munity and college theater. For Lescot, it's been a long, winding road. Born in Los Ange- les, he worked at his craft in Mexico and various"European countries before returning to Southern California. He and his wife, Joan, established a hair salon in Costa Mesa in 197 5 while he pursued a part-time acting and .directing career in · Los Angeles and off~red acting classes locally. 1, --'tbe>~~·th-eat an~ it qults m early 1994, the Lescots and Bonnie V1Se, who serves as their production man- ager, took over the operation, christening it the Theater Dis- trict. After five shows, the lease expired and, following a brief hiatus, the company reopened at its current address and Lescot proceeded to direct 14 of the company's 15 productions (he acted in the other, "One Flew <;:>ver the Cuckoo's Nest"). Lescot specializes in theater that carries a high degree of emotional involvement, such as "Picnic,• "The Boys in the Band" and "Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.• But it's when he veers away from such easily recog- nized titles that he actually does his best work -•Catfish Moon• and "Light Sensitive" being two prime examples. After helming the company's first musical ("Cabaret," opening Feb. 14) and reviving an oldie ( "Lllies of the Field"}, he'll stage "Shat- tered Glass,• the Tennessee Williams story, opening in July. Debbie Grattan was just 7 years old when she made her first local stage appearance -in a children's play called •william and the Gander" at the Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse. Two decades later, she turned profes- sional and delivered an excellent performance in the period come- dy "An Ideal Husband• at SCR. In between, she graduated from UCI with a degree in drama and carved out a reputation as an outstanding actress in communi- ty and college theater. Grattan's superb Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Laguna Playhouse won her a DramaLo.gue award. She also earned acclaim in another Shakespearean comedy, "The Ta.ming of the Shrew," dominat- ing !)le stage of the Huntington Beach Playhouse even as she battled laryngitis. She excelled i--nui~ ~"\?"'° in"r· M~ ......... ~.,~. -"Phililde1fttt8 · ry, "'Cat's Paw• and a trio of Orange Coast Col- lege productions -•Les Liaisons Dangereuses, • "Henry V" and "Baby With the Bathwater.• It was a long-ago local perfor- mance in "The Mousetrap," however, which proved to be the springboard for a professional career. Equity actor George Pelling, who'd worked at SCR, was in the cast of the Agatha Christie mystery and offered to help secure an audition for her, which resulted in •An Ideal Hus- band.• Grattan followed that show with a role in SCR's annual holiday production of "A Christ- mas Carol." Lescot and Grattan have . poured their life's blood into the theater over the years, and only now are beginning to receive the recognition they deserve. They join a long, illustrious list of prior recipients of the Daily Pilot's man and woman of the year awards. Their predecessors include: David Emmes and Doris Allen, 1974; Kent Johnson and Marthella Randall, 1975; Martin Benson and Pati Tambellini, 1976; Ernie Verre and Barbara Hampton, 1977; John Ferzacca and Jean Koba, 1978; Ben Jutzi ·and Susan O'Connell, 1979; Douglas Rowe and Eileen Fisb- bach, 1980; Joe Cordio and Patti- Gene Sampson, 1981; Don Laf- foon and Lee Shallat, 1982; David Paul and Betsy Paul, 1983; Robert Conrad and Robbie Schoonover, 1984; Charles Mitchell and Barbara Van Holt, 1985. Also, Bill Purkiss and Diane Doyle, 1986; Thomas Bradac and Teri Ralston, 1987; 1im Nel- son and Beth Hanson, 1988; Mark Turnbull and Patricia Ter- ry, 1989; Richard Doyle and Anni Long, 1990; David Antno- ny and Joan McGill is, 1991: Te r- ence Alaric and Salome Jens, 1992; Al Valletta and Mary Sul- livan Slack, 1993; Hal Landon Jr. and Kandis Chappell, 1994, and Gregory Cohen and Kysa Cohen, 1995. To this list are added Mario Lescot and Debbie Grattan, a director and actress at the peak of their local careers, from whom the best of their i.mpresslve tal- ent most likely is yet to come. AMTWB'I' NewpmtJMdl ! j i I ~ ' ' ! . : ! ~ ~ i I ! i j l •Readers say street vendors are' an eyesore· and should be eJiminated from Costa Mesa avenues and boulevards. I live on Wallace Avenue between Vic- toria and Hamilton Street. The vendors are definitely a problem on our section of Wallace here. We get com out of shopping carts with the guy honking the born with the shop- ping cart. We get the ice cream push carts ringing bells. We get those produce trucks that honk their horns into the night some- timel while our child.ren are napping. Some of these people have licenses from the Costa Mesa display, I can see them. Othen have no license. I definitely think there 11 a problem and I am all for taking a ban on these in our dty. I think they are very disruptive and they bring down the property values of our dty. DEBBIE WALTERS Costa Mesa On the question of vending trucks and push carts. I'm for outlawing them all together. The ability to keep them under surveillance as to cleanliness is very ques- tionable. The b'asb that they do cause is nega- tive and these people that run them along with their bells and their unsanitary con- ditions, etc. are just causing the area to become more and more Wee a Third World area. . . It was kind of interesting to find some- thing that my neighbors and I have been complaining about now for some time. AB far as the vending trucks going out with the mariachi music playing, that is basi- cally my worse problem. These guys are honking their horn down. the street at 10:30 at night when I am trying to sleep, not to mention the double parking and everything like that and the litter and just problems. STEVE MARONI Costa Mesa In order to avoid a lawsuit from the vendors, the dty should enforce the ven- dor license. They come from out of town. Some trucks are from Gardena, Compton and Los Angeles and I know because I talk to them, So we have to use volunteer pab'ol if it costs too much for a paid pab'ol to monitor. We'll never get rid of these vendors unless ~e start clamping down. They are b'ashing up the street and becoming a nuisance. Especially when I am sick in bed and they come knocking on the door and I have to pull myself out of bed to answer the door.
