epilogue '96
Struggling
from the brink
I n the three months since bur-
glars wiped rus inventory
clean, fleecing in one night
what it took him 15 years to build,
Glenn Verdult has struggled to
haul· his Newport Boulevard
pawnshop back from the brink.
It has been a stretch of frustra-
tion, anger and humiliation for
the 33-year-old proprietor of Win-
ston's Newport Jewelers, which
lost $1 million in jewelry and
$30,000 in cash during the Oct. 9
heist.
He has had to explain to cus-
tomers that irreplaceable family
heirlooms -watches, pendants,
and rings turned over for repair
or for temporary holding in
exchange for qui~ cash -were
gone.
He has endured the knowl-
edge that he arose as a suspect in
the case, with even his own cus-
tomers leveling accusations to his
face.
He had no insurance, and only
with the help of friends and·fam-
i:ly in-the-pawnshop-business-ha
he begun to replenish his stock to
keep his business afloat.
Though bis investors posted a
$100,000 award, the stolen mer-
chandise has never been recov-
ered. And despite tips from infor-
mants, the efforts of private
detectives and the police depart-
ment, the burglars remain at
large. So far the investigation has
led to a single arrest on charges
of possession of a small amount of
stolen property.
Verdult described the experi-
ence as "life-changing" and said
it induced reflection on the way
he has spent his life.
"The bottom line is, you save -
penny-pinching here and saving
there -and in one day it's over,•
he said. •Why did I do all this? To
let some guys go and spend my
child's inheritance? ... These guys
are walking the streets, laugrung,
partying.
"I feel for my son ... You won-
der how to build next time. I
could build for another 10 years
and somebody (could) do the
same thing again.•
Above all, Verdult stressed the
agonizing waiting the last three
months have brought -waiting
for clues, waiting for an arrest,
waiting for something\o tell dis-
traught customers.
"The re are many, many nights
that I can't sleep," he said. •rm
waiting, I'm waiting, I'm waiting.

10 events that helped
shape our lives in '96
1 EL TORO -For nearly two decades, residents
in Newport Beach and Santa Ana Heights have
looked everywhere -even out into the ocean -
for an alternative site to crowded John Wayne Air-
port. Noise-weary residents finally found it at El
Toro. County voters twice affirmed they preferred
an airport at El Toro, and county supervisors voted
in December to pursue a commercial airport at the
Marine base. Lawsuits, however, threaten to delay
quick development of the facility.
2 IRWD -The Irvine Ranch Water Distnct's plan
to pour treated waste water mto the ecological-
ly sensitive Upper Newport Bay ignited near
revolt among residents in Newport Beach. The pro-
ject, wrucb would have saved the lRWD $20 million,
was initially billed as an environmental project
Though various water boards approved the plan.
Newport's objections finally culminated in a com-
promise that will keep the water out of the bay.
3 TIIE FARM -Once upon a time 1t was home to
the dwindling agriculture students at Costa
Mesa High. But in 1996, the farm property
became a crowned 1ewel in a tug-of-war between
the school district and Costa Mesa city oftiaals
School leaders inibally wanted to sell 1t for top dol-
lar instead of discoti.nting the land to make it a ttrac-
tive to another government agency Costa Mesa
ultimately purchased the land and plans to eventu-
ally-construct-a-sports-complex-there.
4 TOLL ROAD -The San Joaquin Transporta-
tion Corridor, the bane of enVlfonmentalists
and Newport residents who feared it would
steer tr'affic into their neighborhoods. flnally opened
-a $2 ride from Newport to Laguna Niguel. So far,
the feared traffic problems have not materialized.
But Laguna Canyon, which the toll road cuts across.
is unlikely to ever be the same.
5 ROY ALVARADO-Gang banger Heroin
addict. Pnson mmate. Alvarado conquered tus
problems and turned his attenbon -his life.
really -to others. He helped young people steer
clear of the pitfalls that had snared him, he founded
groups and programs aimed at getting young Lati-
nos involved in the community, he was a creative
force who was so giving that even his close friends
didn't know how sick he was until his April 22
death from colon cancer. He left a void that lingers
still.
6 LINDSAY DAVENPORT -She became a
household name last August when she beat
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win gold at the
Atlanta games. All of 20, Davenport moved to New-
port to work at the Palisades Tenrus Club
7 CIASS SIZES -Gov. Pete Wilson's· call to
school districts to reduce class size in lower
grades to a ma.xllnum of 20 students per class
brought cheers from parents and concern from
school administrators. While the state provides
some funds, the district has been left to pick up the
rest. Still, the small first-and second-grade~
have earned universal praise from parents, teachers
and students.

A s a community newspaper covering the Newport/Mesa

them. This is
what we came up with -hope you enjoy it. The presidential
campaign rolled through our area and vice presidential candi-

complete with a bevy of secret service agents. In February, we
spent 24 hours in the emergency room at Hoag Memorial Hospi-

On a ride-a-lo.'pg with bi.cycle patrol officers on Costa Mesa's ""
West Side, officer Bill Adams diffuses a domestic dispute and
turns around and put a smile on a youngster's face by teaching
him how to spin a basketball. Local coverage of local events is

Who needs campaign signs?
I n tbe recent eledlon. charges
were made that someone tore
down an opponent's political
signs. I had a similar experience
during my election as a Superior
Court judge in 1950. My experi-
ence had a twist. I did not tear
down my opponent's signs. I tore
down my own.
When one is a candidate for
elective office in California, one
receives from the secretary of
state a little booklet explaining
all the ground rules. One para-
-graph warns that it is against the
law to put political signs on pub-
lic utility poles.

The quest to locate a new

victory over Esperanza.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -When Estancia
High's boys basketball team lost to
Glendale Hoover in pool play last
week, Eagle point guard Selwyn
Mansell took it to heart and decided
something was wrong with his team's
·---picture. "Nobody was really doing anything,
so I figured I had to do something to get
us started, because as a point guard you
need to do something," said Mansell,
who earned Estancia to the champi-
onship of the 12th annual Daily Pilot
Coast Classic with a 71-59 victory Mon-
day over Esperanza.
Mansell, who struggled in the
Eagles' first two tournament games, fin-
ished as the Coast Classic's MVP, scor-
ing 22 points while adding four
rebounds, three steals and two assists.
"We're a little above average with-
out Selwyn,• Estancia Coach Rich
Boyce said of his squad, "but with him
we're a whole lot better. They know the
ball's safe with Mansell.•
Mansell, who played huge Saturday
night in the Eagles' 61-53 win over Edi-
son, a victory that put Estancia (10-4) in
the title game, got an early start Mon-
day morning in anticipation of another
bust-and-move performance from the
perimeter.
"I woke up at 8 o'clock in the morn-
ing and shot around for about two
hours, because I've started seeing more
jump shots,· said Mansell, who canned
three three-pointers, following his 28-
point outing against Edison.

COSTA MESA -It would have been
easy for the Costa Mesa High girls bas-
ketball team to give up, trailing by 15
heading into the fourth quarter.
Instead, the Mustangs turned it up a
notch and made it close before dropping
a 61 -55 decision to Westminster in Mon-
day's third-place game at the 14th annu-
al Costa Mesa Winter Classic.
In the championship game, tourna-
ment MVP Jenny Jennings led Capis-
trano Valley to the title over South Coast
League rival San Clemente.
The Mustangs (9-5) trailed 49-34
heading into the final eight minutes, but

on three layups -one by Kalena Jack-
son after she made a steal. another by
Koo Kim and the third by Kelly Chapin
who made ber's a three-point play.
Westminster pushed the lead back to
10 twice, but Costa Mesa kept chipping
away, cutting it to 54-48 on the second of
two 16-foot jumpers by Julie Collett
with 3:00 left.
The Mustangs came as close as they
would come when Chapin scored on
another three-point play to make it 58-
53 with 1 :06 left.
Kim. who finished with nine points,
got two looks from the three-point arc in
the final minute, but both reached down
into t,he bucket and came back up while
Westminster (10-4) inched out to a 61-53
Jead. Jackson, who also bad nine points,
added a layup on a long inbounds play
with six ticks left for the final margin.

Shontel Sherwood. •The three teams
finishing ahead of us are all ranked in
the County. We're right there.
•we just needed something to get
over the hump, but we didn't get it."
While the fourth quarter was one of
those efforts the Mustangs would like to
save for league play, the first half proba-
bly wasn't one for the highlight reels.
Even though they stayed dote, 31-25.
The Mustangs committed 16
turnovers under WestDdnster's relent-

plays that led difactly to 1-4 Uons' points.

good experience for us. We got a
chance to get away a little bit and
play a different style of basket-
ball. East Coast basketball is def-
inttely d:ifferen . •
Newport Harbor battled back
from a nine-point deficit with
three minutes to go in regulation,
sending the game into OT on an
acrobatic 16-footer leaping-lean-
er by Jameson.
In both of the first two overtime
periods, the Sailors fell behind by
four or five points, before coming
back to take a lead in the closing
seconds only to see their lead dis-
appear on a two-footer in the first
overtime before the Hail Mary
prayer shot sent the game into the
third extra period.
•1t was a strong team effort all
the way around, but we won it at
the free throw line in overtime,"
Hirst said. •Danny hit 5 of 7 free
throws in the three overtimes
while Adam was 5 of 5."
The Sailors will spend one day
flying home and be back on the
practice floor Wednesday for a
Thursday game at Huntington
Beach.
Eagles girls win
HUNTINGTON BEACH -The
Estancia High girls basketball
team closed out the Marina-Reg-
ister Tournament with a 51-48
victory over Century to finish in
13th place.
·u you had told me we would
get two wins before the start of
the tournament, I would have told
you that would be pretty good,·
· Coach PauJ Kirb.¥--
•There were some pretty good
teams over there that didn't get
any wins.•
The victory was especially nice
since the Eagles (9-6) avenged an
earlier-season 51 -25 loss to Cen-
tury in the Estancia Tournament.
The Eagles were battling injuries
at the time.
Ji.U Black led the way Monday
with 22 points while Katie Staple-
ton chipped in 10 for Estancia.
CdM girls top Santiago
GARDEN GROVE -Senior
guard Lindsay Warmingtoq
poured in 27 points, including
four three-pointers to help the
Corona del Mar girls basketball
team win its second straight game
Monday, def eating host Santiago,
50-45, in the first round of pool
play at the Cavalier Classic.
Warmin~on added eight
assists, seven rebounds and five
steals for the Sea Kings (2-5), who
saw their 29-24 halftime lead
erased when ·Santiago outscored
them, 14-9, in the third quarter.
Jen Dickson chipped in 16
rebounds, nine steals, six points
and four blocks for the winners,
who continue pool play today at 5
