/ A s newspaper pho-
/ tographers, we
shoot portraits of
people in the community on
a daily basis. Good light,
bad light, no light -it doesn't
matte r. What matters is we
try to capture the subject's
personality in theirenviron-
ment within a limited time
frame. Sometimes we are
s uccessful and sometimes
we're not. But on the rare
occasion when the planets
are m alignment and all the
pieces come together. we're
able to take a photograph
that reveals the true charac-
ter of an individual. Unfortu-
nately, we aren't able to to
show you all the wonderful
portraits taken in the past
year, but we thought you 1
might enjoy seeing these
images one more time. As
always, it has been a treat for
us at the Daily Pilot to be
able to meet and ~holograph
each and every subject we
come across. We look for-
ward to 1997 and all the
challenges.

CRIMES
CONTINUED FROM 1
burglar, 4l ·year·old Gerald

killlng three Costa Mesa
women, attacking a fourth who
survived, and of two murders in
Tustin and one in Anaheim.
The killer, known as •n e
Thumper-• beceuse--be-blu
geoned his victims, inspired a
county-wide terror during the
1978 .. 79 murder spree. A joint
investigation by the Costa
Mesa, An aheim and Tust\n
police departments, the
Orange • County Sherif f's
Department and the Otange
County District Attorney's
Office matched Parker's DNA
profile to evidence at the crime
scenes. The new evidence led
to the release of Kevin Lee
Green, 38, who had been
wrongly imprison ed for 16
years on one of the Tustin
killings.
"To me that is probably the
most significant case of the
year,• Johnson said. "When
you 're able to close multiple
homicides from an arrest, that
gives the victims' families some
md of closure.•

\ •Gene Baum, Ddve Mobs.
By Barry Faull{ner, ~!Y Pilot
e the deaths of Costa
esa High boys
asketball coach Jason
Ferguson and Coronado High
--~WlRerbaek~ Thufaasau
played out in a more public
forum, the passing of Balboa
Island resident Gene Baum and
Corona del Mar resident Dave
Mobs touched hundreds of
mourners impacted by their
passion and g~erosity, as well
as the personal and professional
commitment their lives
embodied.
Baum, a noted figure in the
local golf community, whose
volunteer work for the Newport
Classic Pro-Am was a major
reason for the annual tourney's
success, lived the final 20 years
of. his life on Balboa Island. ·
The Los Angeles native,
however, was a charter member
of the 75-year-old Balboa Island
YachtOub.
A major mover in the 552
Club, the fund-raising arm of
Hoag Memorial Hospital
Presbyterian, Baum was
involved with several
fund-raising events.
But none, perhaps, was closer
to his heart than the Newport
Classic, held at the Newport
Beach Counv ~µb, of wbich
he was a member. Professional
player recruiting chainnan was
his offidal title; but
troubleshooter may have been a
more apt desaiption. It was his ,
tireless efforts tlult helped the
event raise $306,000 for Hoag
last January.
He died of natural causes
June 25 at the age of 85, leaving
behind a wife, two sons, eight
.. grand cb,ildren, two great
grandchildren, and a legacy few
achieve.
Mobs, who taught physical
educ~on and coached
numerous sports for more than
25 years at Edison High in
Huntington Beach -most
notably girls volleyball -lost a
yearlong battle to cancer July 20.
Survived by a wife and two
daughters, Mohs' legacy also
includes the lasting influence
exerted on the lives of his former
players and students. Many of
his former pupils, including
Newport Harbar boys basketball
coach Larry Hirst, dted Mohs'
influence for their desire to enter
the field.
Though intensely competitive,
he projected a gentle warmth
beyond his own bench or
classroom, spawning frlends and
admirers among all who crossed
his path.
