About a year ago, Bob

would stop the Irvine Ranch

Newport Bay.
•My family has been active
with these kinds of things
before, so I just laughed,"
recalled Susan Skinner, whom
he married May 18.
Now Caustin, as founder of
the non-profit Defend the Bay,
finds himself deep into lawsuits
that could take months or years
to resolve. He still can't say for

FrOm .ER to :Qarstow, Happy NeW Year Balboa PeninSUla locals ·
kick off '91 with a spl8Sh W e bad our holiday sea-
son prkilely planned.
Spend Cbrtstmas in
Denver with our grandguys,
navts and Brett, and their mom
and dad. Check.
The rest would be easy. Get
.in trusty Jeep and head north-
west. Stop in Twin Palls, Idaho
for visit with dear old friends
Jim and Audrey Moore, who
used to own ABC Lumber ove~·
on 17th.
Then head for Corvallis, Ore.
and Bellingham, Wash., two.of
our Pin~ Five potential retiring
places. Check-out wintef there.
En re5ute to Bellingham, stop in
Tahuya, Wash., and spend New
Year's Eve and Day with Ors.
Bill and Carolyn Hardy.
Whoops. Uncheck.
It wasn't so much the weather
up in the northwest -blizzards,
ice, gale-force winds, closed
roads, massive power outages,
etc. etc. -it was our combined
pl\ysie&I conditions.
By the time I left the Sunday
before Christmas, a micyn drug
had fixed me up well enough to
make Denver in two days. My
wife was also improved and
flew out Monday.
Christmas morning we
arrived at Travis and .Brett's
house 1n Parker, a Denver sub-
urb, with Lord knows how many
gifts.
nav's biggie was a Lionel
train set. He and his dad rail-
roaded all day and into the
evening. Brett -he's nine

kidr· was equally delighted
with his Activity Garden. It's a
cozy, C,9rral-like rig he can crawl
into and twirl and wham and
pull loose all kinds of things.
We were scheduled to leave
Denver on the 27th. Instead, I
took my wife to the ER nearest
our hotel. She had a monstrous
cold, said the doc, and pre-
scribed sulphasometbingorother.
Our carefully laid plan began
to crumble. When we tuned in
the Weather Channel, i~ disinte-
grated. We decided to head
straigpt home the neXt morning,
hoping we'd make it by New
Year's Eve day. We almost did-
n!tr
By this time, I'm a wreck
again. Hacking, snuffling,
wheezing, aching. Oh, it was a
wonderful trip. By 4 p.m. on
Dec. 30, we reached Barstow.
(The town is kn.own in our fami-
ly as Barfstow for the occasion
years ago when daughter Carol
yorked in the parking lot of the
huge McDonald's th.ere.)
I We were on the outskirts of
the dty as my wife announced
she couldn't go another mile;
she had been having a rough
Ume with the sulphG..drug. I
quickly seconded the motion
and we checked into the very
nice Holiday Inn that's right by
the railroad tracks in beautiful,
downtown Barstow.
As Dec. 31 dawned, my wife
croaked wee)dy, "I don't want to
get up. I can't get up.• She bad
been saying that every morning
since the day after Christmas.
"You have to," l said. "You're
only two hours from home, your
own bed and medical attention.
And I am not spending New
Year's Eve in Barstow, nor am I
going to spend what is perhaps
humankind's most momentous
birthday driving from Barstow to
Newport Beach."
We repacked our bags for the
last time on this ill-fated journey
and headed west again. We cer-
ainly had no kicks on Route 66.
A's Bobby Troupe's wonderful
song advises, we traveled
through "Gallup, New Mexi-
co ... Plagstaff, Arizona ... " And
we did not forget Winona, and
certainly not Kingman and
Barstow.
Kingman is the least forget-
table. It is near where the dude
accused of blowing up Okla-
homa City lived for some time.

the year of 1996, it is the people
we remember most affectionate-

In the community of Newport-

newspaper every day for weeks.
Some of those folks that have

l)tE BIGGEST HEARTS
John and Donna Crean are
the Newport-Mesa role models
for the American Dream. Their
generosity is legendary, their
open door policy to help all in
need has been well-document-
ed. John Crean spe~t the holi-

together, many more years of

. ' THE BRIGHTEST VISION
Chuck and Turyla Martin look
at art and they see much more
than the beauty of a particular
canvas. The husband and wife

the Argyros name lends. Yet for
all the glitz, and all the social
