• Local educators say Gov. Wilson's
effort to reduce class sizes in additional
grades is a double-edged sword.
By Michelle Terwilleger. Datly Pilot
Newport-Mesa Unified School District will
have the option of expandmg its class-stte
reduction program to include the third grade,
but local education officials are skeptical about
the district's financial ability to do so.
Gov. Pete Wilson announced Thursday his
plan to provide school distncts with state fund-
ing for class-!;ize reduct.Jon programs for all
grades between kindergarten and thud grade
during the 1997-1998 school year.
Under the current budget, dtstncts now Cd.I\
only receive funding for the program in three of
the four grades.
Newport-Mesa has already reduced hrst-and
second-grade classes to the ratio of 20 students
for every teacher, and will make kindergarten
classes smaller during the spnng semester
Wilson also is proposing a $2 bilhon staleWlde
school construction initiative for the June 1998
ballot, $1 billion of which would go toward addi-
tional classrooms for class-size reduction
The governor's announcement to increase
class-size reduction funding from $650 to $666.

skepticism from local education officials.

supervisor and current secretary of education for .!

Tears well up in his eyes as be
recounts some of the many stories
behind the faded photographs -sto-
ries he bas collected through his 65-
year career as a banjo player.
"I am semi-retired, or whatever
you call it,• said Stevens, 87,
explaining he no longer does the
Las Vegas circuit because be doesn't
want to travel.
Although Stevens played with
some of the biggest names in Holly-
wood and Las Vegas from the 1930s
through the 1960s, today he strums
for local children and others.
The Costa Mesa P~ce Depart-
ment invited him to perform for the
children at the Orange Coast Inter-
faith Shelter during its West Side toy
giveaway. His next gig will be at a
luncheon for the Santa Ana
Women's Club on Tuesday.
wwe had him three years ago,
and the people enjoyed him very
much,• said Dorothy Merrigan, pro-
gram director for the club. "He sings
songs of our era, the '30s, '40s and
'50s.·
But in the old days, Stevens was
hired to play for actor Cary Grant,
as his sidekick at the Indianapolis
500 races. In May 1959, Stevens was
the master oj ceremonies for
Hawaii's 50th State Fair that fea-
tured two very young singing stars:
Johnny Cash and Ricky Nelson.
"They were just starting to be
names,• be recalled.
• Now, the photos of such celebri-
ties serve as fond mementos from a
bygone era.
wMy (late) wife, Helen, I made
her my agent so she would have
something to do,• Stevens said.
wshe saved all these things ... other-
wise no one would lnilieve me
today.•
Although he played with stars
like singer Lena Home and the New
York City Rockettes, Stevens was
born a poor boy in Bowling Green.
Ky., in 1909, he said.
"My banjo took care of my three
sisters and brother,• said Stevens,
the eldest of five children.
After learning to play the banjo
at age 8, Stevens made a career out
of being an entertainer. He per-
formed the circuit in Las Vegas and
Reno for 21 years, plus many
appearances on stage in Hollywood
and New York City.
•God gave me an ear, he just
gave me an ear to do these things,•
said Stevens, who claims he doesn't
read music. ·All of these things you
see (his memorabilia) helps me stay
ahve.·
He appeared for 30 weeks
straight as the headline act at Frank
Sennes' Moulin Rouge Showplace of
the World at Sunset and Vine in
Hollywood. The show featured Lena
Home.
"Woo Woo Stevens is dynamite,·
Ed Sullivan was quoted as saying in
the 1956 program.
•I was a country boy,• Stevens
said. "I didn't belong in that show ...
it was a high-class show.•
Broadway was one of the high-
lights of his career. An early photo-
graph shows Stevens with his banjo
on his lap and the New Y<>rk City

Coastline Community Col-
lege has proposed offering col-
lege courses to Newport-Mesa
School District students as soon
as next semester.
For years, top students have
bad to go off campus to Orange
Coast College or Coastline
Community College to enrich
c. their schedules with electives
that are not offered at Estancia.
This proposal would mean
having seven college classes
available to interested students
on the Estancia campus.
Last July, Gov. Pete Wilson
signed SB 292 into law. SB 292
allows high schools to "go back
and claim full apportionment
attendance for part-time college
pupils so long as the pupils are
enrolled in the K-12 program for
240 minutes or more." Essen-
tially it allows both the commu-
nity college and the high school
to collect money from the state
for one student attending both.
For Coastline Community
College, which stands to lose
money in the spring, SB 292
couldn't have come at a better
time.
None of the classes offered
will interfere with Estancia's AP
program, which was the original
fear of some AP teachers.
One of the goals involved is
reducing class size. Estancia has
one of the lo~est class size
averages in the district, an aver-
age size of 26 students per
class. On the whole, ho,wever,
~
class sizes will not be signifi-
cantly affected.

·The b!;>arP. agreed to delay
approval of the environmental
impact report (EIR) that would

Arson _suspected in beauty salon fire
By Christopher Goff ard, Daily Pilot

Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, fire-
fighters arrived at Ms. Llberty
Hair and Nails at 218 E. 17th St. to

Eighteen firefighters battled
the blaze, containing it in 15 min-

The business is now boaraed

Riley said the fire's rapid

A witness saw a black compact
car, possibly a Honda CRX.,·leav-

custody.
"I felt very sad about it -I ·
don't know who did it to me,"
said salon owner John Nguyen of

earth and everything on it.
including your chair and you,
are rotating at about 28,000
miles per hour and hurtling
around the sun much fast~
than that.
We've all experienced a lit-
tle Einstein some time or other
at a traffic light. Happen'ed to
me jusLthe other day on Har-
bor Boulevard. There you are,
stopped at a light. next to a
big truck or a bus. You're
waiting, waiting, when aU of a
sudden, your car starts rolling
backward. You step on the
brake, but you keep rolling.
Horrified. you realize
you're going to doink the car
behind you. Panic sets in. You
peter
buff a
stomp on the brake as hard as
you can. At that point, you
realize you're not moving
backward at all. In fact, the
bus next to you is creeping
forward. You haven't moved
an inch. Thoroughly red-
faced, you sneak a few furtive
glances at the people around
you, hoping they didn't notice
you were an idiot.
What does any of that have
to do with the holidays? How
should I know? Who am 1,
Einstein?
The point is, they come so
fast and furious that every
year it gets harder to keep up.
I've said it before and I'll say
it again: The holidays would
be easier to deal with if we
spread them out over the
whole year instead of 60 days.
We're talking about the
real holidays, by the way, not
the weird stuff somebody
thought up in recent years.
Was there a problem with a
little tip of the birthday bat to
Washington and Llncoln?
. Apparently, because someon'e
decided what we really need-

In Nora Ephron's hands, (the

singlehandedly hurl the resuf-

"Michael" is a dumb film. It
ranges from boring to gratuitous.
What was Nora Et>bron think-

I so wanted to like "Michaer

Ephron even flubbed

Instantly mapped out of their

reminded of where they are and
why they are here.
No, they aren't the diehard

they aren't the sodal •stepped""

The motley crew, comprised
of students, night owls, insomni-
acs and swing shift workers,
comes. during the off-peak hours
to sweat it out and pump it up.
Owing this time of year, late
nighters also include work and
shop-a-holies whose jam-packed
schedules leave little time for
working off those "holiday b.ips"
and "Santa stomachs• during
normal. pre-dinner hours.
William Uu, 25, said ll's nice
to work out in the wee hours of
the morning because the gym is
not overly crowded. Uu, a late
nighVearly morning regular,
works out five to six nights a
week.
Though be is not a fitness
fanatic, on this particular night
he wanted to fjt in an eleventh-
hour workout before his 13-bour
flight to Taiwan. And, with 24
Hour Fitness's new schedule, he
was able to do so.
"I like the fact that this place
fits my schedule,• Uu said.
:'That, and the late-night basket-
ball which they no longer have,
are the main reasons I joined
here.• (Basketball courts now
close at 10:45 p.m.)
Sisters Tenisha and Diana
Whitlock. ages 20 and 17, claim
working out late at night is a
good stress reliever. Since Diana
is a dispatcher and works until
11 :30 p.m., her workout options
are limited.
Also, late at night, there are
no Stainnaster or treadmill lines.
"This is the best time to be
here,• said Tenisha, a student at
Orange Coast College,
"because you don't have to deal
with people.·
Her sister nods in agreement.
"If you come when it's crowded,
you have to wait forever for a
machine,• she said. "If I come
after midnight, I can pipe any
treadmill I want.•
Since the machines are less
crowded, late nighters can com..-
plete their workouts in about an
hour.
While most agree the bµman
body does not operate at ls opti-
mum late at night, they concede
that their schedules do not per-

Energetic 'La Mancha' produetion an impossible ~dream
By Tom Titus, Daily Pilot
H ow many times have you
exited a professional the-
ater production, disap-
pointed in the level of talent or
the interpretation, and muttered.
•1 could do that well myseU?"
Well. if the cast members of
the Costa Mesa Civic Play-
house's recent staging of •Man
of La Mancha• visit The Orange
County Performing Arts Center
to see how the pros do it, they
likely might entertain those
exact thoughts.
After viewing both shows just
a few months apart. it must be
conceded that the community
players put together a more
involving, more immediate and
he originated the part).
Additionally, the stable battle
scene bas been slowed to a bal-
letic crawl, obviously in defer-
ence to Goulet's age and lack of
energy. Consequently, its sav-
agery and the ultimate thrill of '
victory is diluted. Goulet even
runs into trouble descending a
staircase.
Susan Hoffman's Alc1onza is
vocally superb, but instead of a
grimy, sweaty scullery maid, we
get a gorgeous, beautifully
coiffed lady who could step easi-
ly into the role of Belle in••Beau-
ty and the Beast.• Hoffman
needJ more than a few scratch
marks ~er the rape scene to sell
her •born on a dung heap• char-
acter.
The best of the principal cast
I h1 ·c1t 1·1 l{t•\ i"" The only others approaching this
level are the horse and mule
(Josef Reiter and Hechter Ubar-
' ry), who elaborate splendidly on J their equine personas.
members is Darryl Ferrer as San-
cho Panza. Fertet iS the epitome
of the character -short, dumpy
and a master of comic inflection.
Chev Rodgers Is effective as
the gov.emor in the cell block,
but is quite miscast as Pedro -
like Goulet, it's a problem of age.
Ian Sullivan's Dr. Carrasco and
David Wasson's Padre are both
first-rate, as are Unda Cameron
and Tanny McDonald in the
roles of Antonia and the house-
keeper, respectively.
Despite its aforementioned
drawbacks, •Man of La Man-
cha• itself is one of the genuine
treasures of the musical theater,
and its unseen orchestra, under
the baton of John VtSSer, renders
the beautiful alld often biting
score with alacrity. Goulet's
• 1.mpossible Dream• solo is not
as inspiring as it could be, but
Hoffman's wnomous •Aldonza"
chills the blood.
The show, which plays
through Sunday, is written to be
played without intermission, but
this version regrettably includes
one anyway. At least this isn't
dinner theater, where two
breaks would be mandated in'
order to hustle one last round of
drinks.
Goulet bas said he's been
pre5sured to pedorm in •Man of
La Mancha• for the past two
decades. He'd have bee.n wiser
to have accepted. much earlier,
when bis stage energy matched
bis vocal talents -and when the
latter were .more accomplished.

stresses, you gotta have heart -
and that's precisely what's lack-
ing at the Center.
Even with •1..a Mancha's"
original director, Albert Marre, at
the helm. the show is replete
with problems and inconsisten-
cies. And they start at the top,
with the 63-year-old Goulj?t
striving to Keach the impossible
note.
Goulet's singing voice is leg-
endary, and there are traces of
bis old S~ Lancelot power on
display here, but the finishing
kick has vanished. Although the
role of Don Quixote is that of an
old man, in •t.a Mancha" it
should be played by a young
actor who makes himself up to
