Finally we are gifted with an identity elevating us above the unwashed Orange County masses. Number 949. We hope, however, neither rioting nor migration ftom 714 eventuates. Incidentally, the alphabetic conversion of 949 results in BILI.HODGES Costa Mesa I'm for it if they more or less reimburse the business cards, the envelopes, the billing of my stationery. Why should we repay for that service? FRANK LAMBARDI Costa Mesa I am not disturbed at all about having to split in some way the code between 714 and 949: however, I think it is ridiculous to have to divide cities up and so on. It makes it very, very difficult for people to understand whether they only dial a seven- digit or a 10-digit number or which side of the highway the peI50n being called is on. Par- ticularly in the metropolitan- type cities such as Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Tustin and Irvine. It seems to me that despite · th~wiring in the ground that the~phone companies can. in their marvelous 20th-century electrQDics, figure out how to divide up these two area codes into a rational division. Gn.BERT JONES Costa Mesa I do not object to the Public Utilities Cpmmission's breaking up th~ cities with the area code, what I do object to is the horri- ble combination of numbers. We will go on record as one of the most sophisticated cities, being Newport Beach, with one of the fattest, boring, no class, absolutely no design features on these new numbers. -... New ~a ~ode could split Costa It is chunky, it is fat, I just question the people who put these three combination num- bers together and why wouldh'f a sophisticated city like New- port have a one or a zero to break it up? We will be the only city on record, a sophisticated city, with one of the ugliest, fattest, combination of numbers for an area code. It is boring, it has no redeeming features. Make up a new number, put a one or a zero in there. JOSEPH CLEARY Newport Beach If they are going to take half of us, they should take us all. It is not a good idea. If we are going to be the new area code, let's all be 949 in Costa Mesa, not half of us one code, and half of ui another code. I own a business here in town, I'm a real estate broker and I feel the split is fine, but let's just take the whole city code and have it done that way so we don't differentiate Costa Mesa from one area to another. "" LARRY WE1111MAN Costa Mesa I think it is downright ridicu- lous that a dty would be split with an area code. It makes no sense. If someone wants to call, then they would automatically know that Costa Mesa is in the 714 or the 949, but it would become extremely clumsy because then a person would • New 949 number should span from Newport Be.ch to Soutll County. lbougll tome towm will twive ""°aides have to call the operator just about every time he wants to call somebody in Costa Mesa not knowing for sure where he is at. I think the phone company would be pummeled with calls, information calls, asking for the area code of. the person in par- ticular, and they probably wouldn't even know the address, just know they live in Costa Mesa. I think that needs to be looked at. The city should be kept together with an area code. It only makes sense. Ill.I.FLYNN Costa Mesa I think the phone companies should assign a new area code to all of the cellular phones that are already in existence and any new ones that people get, and let the residences and the businesses keep the area codes that they already have. SHARON TUltNEll Newport Beach I would like to suggest we go to an overlay plan as opposed to chasing the bound- aries to where new telephone numbers would receive the new area code and the existing numbers would maintain the current code. It would seem a lot ~impler. ~ HARJtY ARMSTRONG Costa Mesa It would be very poor to have the area code changed. Friends and relatives from other states and cities of Northern California who have our num- bers now are going to have to be contacted so they can call us. Also, my checks have the area cod~ and ph.one number on them. I will have to get new checks if the area code is changed. We should not let the area code be·changed. ELLEN WU.COX Newport Beach I disagree with the splitting of Costa Mesa with the two area codes. I think that Costa . Mesa should stay with the 714 throughout the entire dty and South County should get the nay 949 area code simply based on the fact that Costa Mesa has been here a whole lot longer than any of the cities in South County and they are the new ones so they should get the new area code. MANNY BONILLA Costa Mesa I think what they are really doing is what is easy for the phone company versus what makes sense for the consumer. Being that Newport Beach and Costa Mesa have always shared a lot of joint facilities, why would they break up the two areas? Having one in 949 and one in 714 makes absolutely no sense. I think if they are going to do that they should start in Irvine and move it south. KIM RUSSELL Newport Beach I can understand the need for a new area code, but split- ting a city, I don't understand that. It seems to me tliat either you do the whole city or not at all and I think it might really affect the workings of the New- port-Mesa School District in _ having the area codes in the one district different. DEBBIE Sll.VERSTEIN Newport Beach I am not happy at all with splitting Costa Mesa into 949 and_714. I think we should stay with one area code, but of course I would prefer 714 beca\1$e my husband and myself have a lot of business that we do overseas and a lot of people would be calling us. I'm sure there is going to be a long period before they switch it, but I would rather that we stay 714. Sil.VIA YOUSSEF Costa Mesa I just kind of wondered what kind of an idiot would split.a city down the center and change the area code? Who is going to pay for all of the letter- heads, all of the advertisements and everything else that all the businesses are going to have to redo from 714 to 949? South County is one thing, but South County does not start in Costa Mesa. South County is Irvine, Laguna and southern Orange County. DUANE DICKERSON Costa Mesa I don't have a problem with the area codes themselves, but I do have a problem with aplit- ting cities into the two area cod~. I think if you are going to have two area codes, then 1hey should be split down so tha\.each city is in one area. I think it is going to be a real pain to try and figure out where you are calling if you got Costa Mesa being spilt up between 714 and 949. EJUCTROUP Costa Mesa .. . Oayton scored nine of her 11 points on a follow, a 6-foot turn- around jumper, a three-point play off another re bound and two more free throws as Newport tiu?tened the noose, 40-36, head- ing into the fourth quarter. Ocean View scored the first bucket of the final quarter, but a Badorek layup and 1 of 2 free throws made it, 42-39, with 5:08 Jeft. The two teams traded buck- ets one more time, to make it 44- 4.1 with 2:20 left. Both teams had their opportu- nities in the closing minutes, but neither could connect until Anna Lembke, who led all scorers with 21 points, got behind the defense on an inboWlds play from balf- court and scored on a layup with 0:16 to go for the final margin. "We were a little gun shy com- ing out," said Newport Harbor Coach Bob Dukus. #We turned it up a notch on defense and did a good job after the first quarter. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot ORANGE -It was a bold move through the middle, a dri- ve amidst traffic that resulted in a big arch, a layup that kissed high ofi the glass and fell through the net. "That was a big-time shot, it might have ~n our biggest shot of the season,• Estancia Coach Rich Boyce said of senior guard Selwyn Mansell's score late in the fourth quarter, a bas- ket that· tilted the delicate bal- ance of a close nonleague game won by the Eagles, 60-54, over Orange. ·Next, Boyce wanted to talk about respect. Respect for his team (11-4), a squad that claimed the championship of its own tournament (Daily Pilot Coast Classic) earlier this week, but still hadn't defeated a team ranked in Orange County's Top- 10 poll ... until Friday night. "That's a game we wanted to win real bad," Boyce said, after Mansell follow~ up his tourna- ment-MVP performance in the Coast Classic to score 18 points in a thriller against the No. 9-• ranked school in the county. "If we want to get respect, that's how you do it, you beat this team," Boyce added. "This Orange team is a senior-domi- nated team that is well-coached (by Richard Bossenmeyer).· The host Panthers (11-3), who tied Estancia in scoring every quarter except the fourth, had an opportunity to tie the game, but Brian Krauss' three- point attempt didn't make it. Estanda's Evan Taboada rebounded, then dished to teammate Sam Nelson, who was fouled and sank one of two free throws with 0:27 remaining to give the Eagles a 58-54 lead. Earlier, with 0:40 on the clock, Estancia's Brandon Casil- las (10 points, six rebounds) drained two from the free-throw line to put his team ahead, 57- 54, a pair Boyce termed as pos- sibly "the biggest free throws of the year.• To break a tie (47-47), Mansell (four rebounds, two assists) nailed a three with 3:18 left In the game. But it was Mansell's drivipg layup that banked high off the glass that put Estancia ahead, 52-47, the biggest lead at the time of the fourth quarter by any team. "At the end, we had the best player on the floor,• said Boyce, whose squad will play Capistra- no Valley next Wednesday, a team ranked. 10th in the county. •w as (Mansell) nails? Nelson (15 points, four re.bounds and two assists), Ryan Simpson (13 points, five boards) and Casillas also scored In dou- ble figures for Estancia, which • trailed as much as 29-24 In the third quarter. Simpson, who made all five of his field-goal attempts, grabbed four offensive rebounds. Estancia's biggest lead prior to the game's conclusion came in the first quarter, 11-6. NelSon hit a three and Simpson scored on a layup, but a talented Orange team -led by Krauss (15 points) and point guard Mal- cum Moon (13) -came back. Krauss' first of three extra- point buckets gave Orange a 22-17 lead in the second quarter, but Mansell scored and Simpson converted a three-point, when Mansell passed to him on the fast break. That tied it, 22-22. ... The Panthers started strong in the second half1 building their 29-24 lead, but the Eagles didn't fold. In fact, their full-court press caused two Orange turnovers, the only two of the quarter for the fundamentally sound Pan- thers, who attempted just two (made only one) free throw the entire fourth quarter, a period in which Estancia sank eight. •1 thought we played prettY sub-par the first three quarters," said Boyce, whose team shot 7 of 8 from the field in the final quarter. r------------------------------------------------------, college men's hoops Vanguards roll, 86-52 COSTA tvtESA -Southern California College's men's basket- ball team improved to 9-4 Friday night with an 86-52 nonconfer- ence decision over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, fueled by the dou- ble-digit scoring of five players. 1 Terence Wilborn and Adam Dzierzynski each scored 14 for I I sec. backed up by Eric Walker (13), Marlon Watson (12) and I Rod Scheuerman (11). W:th my new position as the men's volleyball coach at the UC Irvine, I'm always asked about the job. Well, it is going well. The UCI athletic administration has been very supportive of my team and our coaching staff. Since I took the job in July, after admission deadlines, the team is basically who was left from the pre'Qious year's team. We have workt!d since September with conditioning and limited volleyball gym timeP- Nov. 1 marked the beginning of our first "traditional" volleyball time where we are allowed to be in the gym with the whole team for up to 20 hours per week. nus 20 hours includes weight room and video review time as well as actual gym time. The level of play is very exciting with the top teams in the United States in our conference, the Mountain Pacific· Sports Federation. Our home schedule includes matches with UCLA, Hawaii, Stanford, Long Beach State, UC·Santa Barbara and Pepperdiile. These are teams that any volleyball enthusiast should want to watch in action. In the past. the UCI coaching staff has opted to play their .. home matches in Crawford Hall because that is their practice tacility. We will play at Crawford but have scheduled two matches in the Bren Center which is tremendous place to watch volleyball. On March 28, UCI will play Stanford at the Bren. The Cardinal is led by former Estancia basketball and volleyball star, Matt Fuerbringer. UCLA will visit the Bren on April 15. Newport's Eric Vallely and CdM's Brian Coleman are both in the UCLA volleyball system. The present UCI team features 6-foot-10 Chris Harger who is the senior captain and is the "go-to• gqy..for Irvine. Donnie Rafter, who led Tustin to a CIF Championship in 1995, is one of the outside hitters. My coaching staff has worked hard to establish a top-notch program. Jason Bilbruck (recruiting and administration), 1\'avis Turner (scheduling and training) and Rieb Polle (training and administration) have put in countless hours. Former BYU standout, Shawn Patchell, who currently teaches and coaches at Irvine High, is a graduate assistant coach. Another question always charlie- brande , ' '- asked is: When does the season start? The answer is Saturday -- night at Crawford Hall when · UCI hosts Cal-Berkeley . Former CdM football and volleyball standout, Rob Alshuler, is a setter/backrow specialist for the Bears. The 7 _ p.m. match is the season-openec_ for both teams. On Jan. 29, UCI will host . Princeton at Crawford (also sei ; for 7 p.m.). There are many locpl ties to Princeton. Tiger Coach Glenn Nelson played basketball at Orange Coast College in the • early 1970s for Herb Livsey. He. . still recruits quite heavily in Southern California. The hope of improving the UCI program puts a great emphasis on recruiting . The NCAA rules do not allow me to discuss our recruits, but I can say that we have signed two players and are in close contact with some blg high school seniors. This coupled with a transfer or two should allow for future success in the UCI men'.s program. 0 In past articles, I have updated readers on the progress of our local players as they pursue their college careers. While I try to include.everybody from our area, it is inevitable that a few will be missed. This Christmas, I received a card from Rebecca Goldenberg who·is attending the University of Indiana. Rebecca was a member of Newport HarbGr's 1994 State Championship tea.Ill as well as a soccer and track standout at Newport. She played for the Orange County Volleyball Club. , I had not beard from her sine~ she left for Indiana two yea.rs ago. It was great to read in her letter that she was a defensive specialist for the 1996 Hoosiers. She was also on the Dean's List. As I have often stated, the greatest part of my job is watching foaner players succeed in life. This i!s one of those times. "Investors are finally getting the true picture of the underlying strength and diversity of the Southern GaJifornia economy." said Duane Waters. a Los Angeles real estate partner. "We are finding the greatest interest in companies with suburban office and industrial properties, particularly in areas where entertainment, technology and manufacturing are strong." Real estate investors -whether located in Holland or Hong Kong - increasingly are making their decisions based on sQphisticated analysis of demographics, employment and wage statistics and other data, Waters points out. "Southern ailifomia is back on the radar screen," he said. · However. Waters notes that location. and demographics are not the only factors in the equation. Real estate companies must follow corporate standards and provide business, technology, management development and the highest business practices to win favor with the largest institutional capital sources. 'The globalization of capital in the real estate industry is a growing trend and today Southern Calif omia must compete with Thailand as well as Texas," said Waters. "Moreover, real estate is no longer viewed as a long- term investment so capital is much more volatile, moving to where the most attractive yields can be found. Real estate investments now average seven years, with the longest at 10 years." In a recent study conducted by CREIA among real estate agents and brokers statewide. riearly 62 percent of the iespondents estimated that a typical inspection uncovered up to $1,000 in needed repairs, while 26.S percent estimated an average of $1,000 to $2,500 in needed repairs. .. It's important for home buyen to acass the condition of the property they are purchasing up front rather than waiting until after escrow clOSC$," said Scott Clements, president of CREIA. "Any faulty conditions that are uncovered in the home inspection report during escrow can be addressed with the seller and conected at that time." According to Clements, a professional inspection can be valuable to a home buyer in protecting themselves against added costs for immediate repain. Results from the same study showed that more than 76 percent of real est.ate agents and brokers in California agreed that the cost of a professional home inspection is worth the ~fits a buyer might receive from it and 84 percent said they always recommend a home inspection when representing a buyer. A professional inspection consists of a visual inspection of the property's accessible areas including roof coverings, attic and roof framing, foundation and under floor support systems, walls, ceilings, floors, windows and doors, firepl.ces, chimneys. water beater, plumbing. electrical, central heating and air conditioning systems. The buyes is usually provided with a written report and, when warranted, a recommendation for repairs of further evaluation by a specialist such u a tradesman or structuril engineer. For homeowners interested in sprucing up their favorite rooms. the experts at Baldwin Hardware Corporation, the leading manufacturer of solid forged brass architectural hardware, offer some suggestions on how to incorporate solid brass products to make kitchens .and baths • more appealing. Kuchens Cabinet knobs and pulls. Completely renovating a kitchen can be costly. Instead, create an easy, attention-grabbing face lift by installing new cabinet knobs and pulls. And, to enhance a kitchen's natural look, select today's new brass knobs and pulls in 'verdigris, patina or satin brass finishes. Door hardware.
