Pupos could not even find

COSTA tvfESA -The Costa Mesa
High girls basketball team protected its
lofty position m the Pacific Coast
League standings Thursday night, but,
all agreed, visiting Aliso Niguel took
the moral lugh rodd in a 58-31 Mustang
~ctory. ·
Aliso (5-21 , 2-8 in league) played
without ven players, six of whom
were suspended lor disciplinary rea-
sons, according to first-year coach Krts-

jw\ior varsity roster and played every
one of her newcomers against the sec-
ond-place hosts.
The Wolverines added intrigue by
seizing an 11 -6 lead at the end oI one

The Mustangs, rank,ed No 3 m CIF
Southern Section Division Ill-A and
hopelul of receiving a top-four seed
when pa.i.ripgs are annoUC1ced Sunday,
made things tough for the VlSltors with
an inspired full-court press to open the
second quarter.
The 23-0 run, fueled by nine Aliso
turnovers, took only 4:01 and included
scoring contributions from five players.
Senior Evelyn Powers and junior
Autumn Smith had six points du.ring
the bbtz, while junior Jenny Earnest
(five), sophomore Nancy Hatsushi
(four) and senior Uanne Sasaki (two)
o.lso helped douse any upset hopes.
Smith finished with 16 points and 20
rebounds ond three blocked shots,
while .Earnest collected 16 points, five
rebounds and five steals.
Powen, playing her final regular-
season home game, added 10, while
Sasaki finished with six points and five
boards.
Hatsushl, who like the aforemen-
tioned standouts saw her minutes
diminished as Weeks substituted liber-
ally, chipped rn six assists, four steals
and four points.
Senior Judy Kidane, who got a start·
