FIVE EASY QUESTIONS
Deborah Young with husband,
Chris Ayayo, and Driver.
Hopping into the
Chinese New Year
<I • EDm>R'S NOTE: We asked Deborah Young. co-
owner of the Bamboo Terace an Costa Mesa. about
today's ce~ion of the Ounese New Year.
Why is Chinese New Year celebrated
in February instead of Jan. 11
The Chinese Calendar is based on the
cycle of the moon rather than the birth of
Chnst. The moon has some sort of pat-
tern that vart~ and 1t repeats itscU every
. 12 yeclJ'S. It can fall anywhere between
mid-January to February.
What year is it according to the lunar
caleo4ar, and What animal represents it?
According to the lunar calenddf, the
year is 4697, which is represented by the
rabbit. According to a Chinese lrgend,
Buddah invited all the animals of the
world to a celebration. Only 12 showed
up, and to reward those arurnals, Bud-
dah named a year after each one.
What are some of the characteristics
of someone born in the year of the rab-
bit?
A person that is born in the year of the
rabbit is known to be affectionate and
pleasant. They are also known to be very
discreet, cultured and bo~ diplomats.
How do you celebrate Chinese New
Year?
As a Chlnese American, what we nor-
mally do is have a family gathering
where we have dinner and exchange
gifts. Oranges and tangerines are usucll-
ly exchanged, representing good luck.
It's very important that the oranges and
. tangerines have the stems and leaves on
them. We also exchange th05e little red
envelopes with money in them.
What foods are usually eaten for the
New Year celebration 7
In my fdmily, we eat Peking duck with
traditional Chinel;e buns. There is a very
specific way to prepare the duck from
when it's butchered to the way it's
cooked The whole thing usually takes a
couple ot da)'5 and requires the entire
family to help out Wlth the preparation.
People usually only eat Pelting duck on
speaal occasions. because it takes so
much time to prepare.
My father·prepares the white buns.
n1ey'ro kind of like little pouchcl). They
usually have layers, which can be filled
Wlth green oruons, hoism saure and the
m~t from the duck. They look sort of
like ~andWlcbes.

Monte Vista School is a hot
property again this year. A cou-
ple of years ago, there were cill
sorts of plans for lt. Currently, 1t

Bay Conbnuation School and
Monte Vista ·Independent Stu~
I ies. It is my understanding that
both would like to remain on site.
However, the Newport Harbor
zone has its eye on Monte Vista
for two purposes. One ls to create
a K-3 center, which then feeds
into Kaiser Elementary School,
which will contcl.Ul grades 4-6.
The students would then.go to
Ensign and Harbor High.
A second group, which hopes
to allevtate some of the pressure
on Ensign and Harbor High,
wants to make Monte VlSta a K-6
school, which then feedl> into
Corona del Mar High for grades
7·12.

11 the 10-minute school pre-
~cntations, which start off the
school board meetings, get any
longer, we will be there unW
mJd.night. Maybe the school pre·

week, Kaiser Primp.ry School had a rousing' contingent to support
its school. It was great, but it did
last 45 minutes. •
For those of you dismayed
that Fairview Ave, is tom up
again between Baker and
Arlington, the good news is that
the school district may get a
whole lot of dirt out of the deal.
The district has been offered
12,000 cubic yards of dirt. It may
be enough to fill in playground
lakes and help floor a new foot-
ball stadium.
I was all ready to hear the
results of the study by the archi-
tectural hrm that is assessmg the
needs of the schools in the d.ls·
tnct, if every school was ma.de
c;afe and modem. All we were
told is that they have produced
75 pages of information about
what people at the school sites
think is needed.

the standard of the industry to

It appears the reason the fig-

the district qualibes for any of the
state money approved in the
November school bond election.
· I suspect that the hope ls to
qualify for some of that, which
requires us to put up matching
funds. We are to receive monthly

In honor of Presidents Day on Feb. 15, we deeded to visit Wilson Elementary School m Cosld Mesa
and ask students what they thought made presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington spe-
ocll. Here IS what they had to say:
"They were speciuJ because
President Lincoln helped free
the slaves. It is good that he did
that because people didn't
want to be slaves. U I were
president, l would say to lower
the money for food because
sometunes it costs too much .

Ot. Warren Fong. the head of the
Cancer Center at Hoag "Hospital,
told us that 3,000 youths under

number is repeated every day.
The average age a smoker stdrb

Eighty-seven percent of lung .

Hoag figured the best way to
treat lung cancer is to stop kids
from smoking. So they are fork·
ing out $120,000 over the next
two years to make that happen
m our school district All fourth-,
fifth-and sixth-graders will
receive education in smoking
prevention. Coaches and health
teachers will be able to take a
hall-day traming class in detect-
ing cancer m kids. The classes
have already helped to save
some students.
Middle school-aged luds will
have materials available, as well
as assembhes, to get the mesSdge
across. Each comprehensive high
school will have a smoking C6·

to try to help kids who are
already hooked stop smoking,

you could easily have a double fit,
no one can faolt a takeout to one
