Let me see 11 J understand Uus cor·
rcctly. Th1$ Newport-Mesa task force
L<> suggesting that we do away with
our students working toward a goal of
excellence -and al.so elim.Jnate the
numencal rankings of graduates.
Why would we want to take away
this tncenbve and opportunity for
those s~ who desire to aclueve
this goal? lf anything, I would think
wo as pruents and teachen would
want to encourage e"ceUence and
promote competition.
I find 1t interesting that Tom Jacob-
son says, "It's not fair to draw a dts·
tinction between those who are so
close"
So let's see, maybe we shouldn't
keep score at football games because
it's not fair Or an athlete shouldn't
receive recognition as most vaiuable
player because it's not tau. Or the
outstanding student shouldn't receive
that scholarship because it isn't fair.
Or the accomplished track star who
wms by a 10th of a second shouldn't
rece1ve the gold medal because it
isn't fair. Or the student whose par-
ents buy him or her a new car for a
birthday present shouldn't dnve it
because it's not fair.
What in the world iS thJs "it's not
fair" mentahty? Really, don't we want
to move ow children toward excel-
lence and get away from medJocrity?
ONOY FOLEY

When I first read the Feb 3 article,
J was astounded. It seemed to be the
ultimate step in de-motivatmg our
youth.
My mind took the cynical course of
wondenng how someone who had
been the pnncipal of two of our dis·
trict lugh schools could possibly
endorse such an idea. Frankly, J won-
dered how he could have been asso-
ciated with the teaching profession
for most of his life. After all, I thought
d teacher's objective was to help and
motivate children to achieve an edu·
cation in preparation for their future
on the basis of their mdiVJdual capa-
bilities, expectations, goals
Today, of course, th.iS as not the
Objective. Rather, it appears to be to
tum out thousands of identical souls
with few values, goals and standards,
and who are easily influenced, con-
trolled or directed by those who per-
ceive themselves to represent the
leadersh.ip elements of our culture.
'This at least appears to be the objec-
tive of the current liberal, academic
fraternity. ·
Someday perhaps they, will wake
up and deode that spelling, mathe·
matics and, yes, winning dre more
important than feeling good and
being nonjudgrnentaJ I hope 1t is not
too late.

I think moVing the fourth-graders
to Davis is not going to solve any
problems ("A gathering storm on
school realignment." Jan. 28).
It's ridiculous for Killybrooke
School. They have so many empty
classrooms that some of the district
people are using classrooms for
offices. It seems such a shame
because the school distnct has new
offices. Killybrooke is such a small
school with so few students.
They should bnng the fifth-graders
back to Killybrooke, then the number
of students a\ Davis won't be so over-
whelming. If you look at the numbers
for Davis, it's staggering. They are
taking fourth·, fifth. and sixth-graders
from four elementary schools U my
daughter went to Davis, she would be
one of about 350 fourth-graders. At
Killybrooke, she is one of about 75
I won't let my girls go to school at
DaVIS because at sits right next to the
high school. They need to be a little
older before t.hey should be dealing
With adolescents. The high school
kids are great one on one, but when
they get into cliques they can be dan·

By putting these children in these dr·

Robert Barbot JS open to other options
for our zone (and 1 hope other zones
as well, particularly Estancia).
Here is a proposal/suggestion:
Some of our high schools are over-
crowded, and some need more stu-
dents. Could we Jook at rezoning the
bounddrles for all the high schools?
Open up middle schools? Davis
school site l already set up for upper-
grdde levels.
Could we possibly have grade con-
figuration of kindergarten through
fifth, sixth through eighth, and ninth
through 12th, and one elementary
school from each zone have a
preschool program for those who
qualify? I realize we would still need
to open up a couple of etementary
schools.
I would like to know when the last
time our high school zones wete
drdwn up? Maybe it is tune for us to
look toward a new millenruwn with a
fresh start in actually helping our kids
and theu schools by adjusting our
boundaries.

It is getting to be so nd.iculous thbt we
have to go up in arms over a name of a cof-

Every tourist in the world who goes to
Hawaii goes to the Bad Ass Coffee store to
get a T-shirt, and they all come back an~
wear it very proudly and are very eo;tatic
over it. But boy, put it in their back yard
and it is a bad deal. If it is good for the
economy, it is good for everyone. I think
this has gotten way out of control.

How about a dog park'?
My question concerning the park (·New·

When is Newport going to have a dog park7
I bfive been asking that for a while to differ-

Jf :is a bit embarr~sing that people from
·Ne,vport have to drive to every other city

tbisis one of the la~t chances to have a dog

]ENIFLR RA<Jl.ANO · s cott Sandin 's 'venture into the

one thing: People love to play

The 33-year-old Newport Beach resi-

Monday after a front-page story in the
Daily Pilot told of his unsuccessful -
but highly creative -attempt at rinding

He stood on the comer of West Coast

afternoon with a cardboard sign that
read, ·w111 work 4 candlelit dinner.•
Claimmg to be a nice, shy guy who

have struck a chord
with women who

"I was really kind

' the· article has been
getting some people
interested,· he said
Monday. •People have been trymg to
match me up with th ir waitresses,

Lisa Hmshelwood was visiting her
family m Newport Beach from Northern
California when she saw the article.
•1 think my sister would be a perfect
match for him: she said "She's a
screenwnter, too, she's shy and has no
Newport Beach attitude, either. A lot of
'i the t~ings he said about himseU applied
to her. She even goes to the same cof-
feehouse.•
'P
Hmshelwood said he plans to show
her Isler the story aod persuade her to
call Sandin.
Sandin said he even talked directly
with one young wom.sn who seems to
have some thing:, in common with him.,,
The two may get together later this
week for coffee.
"l wasn't really expecbng this,"
S mdin said. "I gµess 1t was hke a giant

Sandin said he decided to do some-
ttung wacl.cy for Valentine's Day on a·
dare from a friend, who suggested that
he go to Hooters restaurant for dinner
and propose mamage to the flfst wait-
ress who came up to him.
But he decided o.n the sign idea
instead.

Although most city councils
spend 25% to 35'}o of their annu-

But in : some cases, 1 police
