But for Nirownand, who was on a track and field team at the time, that picture resulted in his discovery by an Iranian director who was try- ing to find the right person for his movie "Tl)e Runner.• After seeing Niroumand on that sports magazine cover, the director, Amir Naderi, went to Tehran, foWld out where Nirownand lived and asked him \o star in his movie. That moment led the 25-year-old Orange Coast College student to eventually defect from his country of Iran, become well-known throughout the international film industry, and move to Costa Mesa to establish his future in America. N'U'oumahd defected from Iran, which was in the midst of the Iran- Iraq War at the time, af\er being asked to apologize for ma.king the film, which contained· sensitive issues that offended the Iranian govenunent. DON LEACH I DALY PILOT Costa Mesa resident and Orange Coast College student Madjid Nlroumand has found a new home ln the United States. "The Runner" was banned in Iran after Niroumand refused to apologize. "I llad a lot of pressure and bad times at an early age,· he said. ·1 just moved on. (Leaving Iran) gave me the opportunity to see the world and see what the world is about.• The 1985 film was about an orphaned and homeless child who was determined to survive in a large port city on the Persian Gulf. It was the first post-revolution Iranian picture to be released in the United States. Niroumand later made another movie called "Water, Wind and Sand• and has dubbed several for- eign films into Farsi. After his first movie was released. Nirournand and the movie received high acclaim at several international film festivals and from film critics around the world. One American critic even labeled Nirownand "the best child actor of the decade" in 1987. The Democrats are just making a big deal out of nothing. 1llis is the way they operate. JOAN MARTIN Newport Beach l don't support their position at all. I called both congressmen's offices Monday morning to ask them not to vote for him and was told that they were both going to vote for him. They would not lis- ten to any of my opinions at all. I feel Gingrich is a great dis- grace to our country and to our Republican Party. We need to get our Republican Party back on the right track.
