After the film was complete, entertng it 11\ the festival was the next logical step for any new Newport Beach filmmaker. And she mandged lo finish the film on a $15,000 budget. •I wrote to every folllldation I had heard of and was very lucky to get a very generous grdJlt from Kodak," she said. •And then some of the Uungs were provided by the school. "I'm really excited about it." Jim Abbott '" Abbott told reJ>C?rters last month, before heading to spnng trairung. For Abbott, a member of the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame (to celebrate the millennium), 1t has been a Wetime of challenges. . U you had come across Abbott Abbott would bypass the minor'.' 0 leagues, going straight to the big 1 leagues in 1989. It marked ontya1• the 15th time since the inception of the draft in 1965 that a player made his professional debut in • ., r the ma1ors. m' • 1 on the sandlots when he was a kid and someone had told you he . was eventually going to throw a no-lutter for the New York Yan· kees, you'd have wondered from where that person had just escaped. But Abbott defied all the odd ,_ When Abbott was a high schooJ star io Michigan, baseball observers never worried about . his fastball or slide(, determination or temperament. His stuff was major league, his spuit like a ~aint. It was his nght hand (or lack of one) that womed scouts. But despite being born without a right hand, Abbott proved he could field his posiuon on the mound and even swmg the bat as well as anybody. Hitters qwckly learned never to bunt off hlm. He would pounce on bunto;, change his glove from resting on his handles~ arm, pick up the ball, transfer it and throw out the baserunner as effloenUy as anybody. So the University of Michigan gave the boy wonder (and role model to hundreds of disabled people) a baseball scholarship. Abbott didn't disappomt, · becoming a celebrated amateur betore turning pro. In 1988, Abbott won the Golden Sptkes Award (hononng the country's top collegiate baseball player), helped Team USA capture the gold medal at the Seoul Olympic Games and secured the coveted Sullivan Award, which salutes the nation's best amateur athlete. The Angels selected him No. 1 in tl)e June 1988 tree-agent draft (eighth pick overall) and Abbott continued to answer " ... , every challenge. He made the •J.U": Topps All-Star rookie team in '89 and posted a 12·12 record with 111 11 four complete games and two uuo shutouts, becoming the first left-handed Angel rookie to pos:t- wms m double figures since FTdnk Tanana m 1974. But on Dec. 6, 1992, many fans were ready to cover their eyes when the AngelS traded therr beloved Abbott to the Yankees f~r two pitchers and then-rookie first baseman J .T. Snow. Abbott, prdlSed by a number of chanties because of the time he volunteers for disadvantdged children in Southern Calilomia, was embraced by New York fans. Abbott, out of baseball for most of 1997 and '98, made a comeback with the White Sox last year and could be on his way to making more news in Milwaukee. Bark Endeavour on a voyage that would forever change the world some 231 years ago. The ship was a converted coal carrier (collier) and ls perhaps the best khown ship of world exploration and navigation in maritime' history. A non-profit organization from Australia, known as the H.M. Bark Endeavour Foundation, completed the project of constructing an exact replica of Cook's ship to reenact the three-year voyage that began ' in 1768. John Longely, CEO of the Endeavour Foundation, was this week's guest speaker at the Wednesday Yachtsmen Luncheon held at the Newport 1-Jarbor YC. Longely, a veteran of five Australian America's Cup campaigns, said, vcook's ship was originally commissioned as the Earl of Pembroke. She was renamed Endeavour for Cook's expedition. Our ship 1S a 98% e:xact museum replica - she's a time machine.• The H.M. Bark Endeavour is' currently on the North American leg of her voyage and will be sailing into Newport Beach April 16. Tbis incredible replica of . history will be open for tours, under the direction of the ' Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, through April 25. This significant Captain Cook voyage altered all prevtous world , charts and botanical information myths that preceded hls exploration. Cook's travels 1011111 terr once plilips produc~ extens1ve geographic knowledge of the South Pacif1c, New Zealand and Australia. Cook reached Tahiti and then sailed southwest to prove or deny the existence of a •Great South Land,· eventually to be known as Australia. He followed the coast and anchored m what he named •sota.ny Bay• near where Sydney is today. In addition, Cook is credited with the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands and other dots upon the globe noted for coconuts and palm trees. When he ·discovered• Hawaii, he really didn't know where he was, that was until he asked a 'local brah' who told him he'd landed in a place called Honolulu. The locals, out of courtesy to a visitor, continued to educate Cook on exactly what he'd discovered. Cook was later killed in Hawa.il.
