0 or Rachael Maxwell,
entering her short film
m the Newport Beach
Intemabonal Film Fes·
nval was just what she
was supposed to do.
And ir,i d week, the 22-year·
old Newport Beach resident
found out that her college the-
sis -"The Face• -was ,
• dccepted as one of 25 shorts
competing for several awards
m the fourth annual indepcn·
dent film festival that includes
more than 120 fibns from all
over the world.
Because of the costs of pro-
ducing a feature-length filin,
Maxwell decided that a short
would be a more tangible alter-
native !or the film, which com·
pleted her undergraduate stud·
1es at New York University.
After the film was complete,
entertng it 11\ the festival was the
next logical step for any new
Newport Beach filmmaker.
And she mandged lo finish
the film on a $15,000 budget.
•I wrote to every folllldation
I had heard of and was very
lucky to get a very generous
grdJlt from Kodak," she said.
•And then some of the Uungs
were provided by the school.
Budget-wise I'd say half of the
things were provided by the
school. And the actors and
crew all worked for free. The
rest my parents were generous
enough to help me out with.
•The school gives you a
camera, lights a.nd insurance
and everything {for production!
for two weeks. For an expen-
cnced filmrnciker that rrught be
enough bme to make a feature,
but for me, working with a Stu·

we could accomplish.•
The film is about John, an
unconventional man who does-
n't fit into society. 1 le becomes
obsessed with the beauty he
ftnds in the fdce a new librarian,
who, out of fear of John's haunt-

Newport Beach's Rachael Maxwell, 22, went to New York
University, made a Ulm and entered it into the Newport
Beach lntemaUonaJ Film Festival
amazed at his daughter's abili-
ty to present this story.
"Here m Newport Beach we
don't encounter people like
this," he Sdid. "Rachael's geruus
is her ability to get into the rrund
of John. There is a tremendous
amount of storytelling tf1 a very
short fllm. The resolution is -
there is no resolution, somewhat
like "The Iceman Cometh.' It
challenges the audience [to
understand thiS man), which is
what I think is terrific."
"The mam character was
actucllly based on a very good
friend of mmc, • Rachael
Maxwell Sdld. "I JUSt wanted to
have thJ.S very SllTiple person
whose only goal in life was to
find beaub.lul things, who
would never harm anyone.
And I wanted the film to have
a happy ending, but the more
people read it and the more I
thought about their sug9es-
tions I realized there isn t a
place for such a simple person
in the real world."
"The Pace• is the byproduct
of Maxwell's first attempt at
filmrnak:ing.
HI made a few student-project
films, but Uus is the first real film
I've made." The 16 1/2-mmute
short took about six months to
produce. "I had a great crew, all
of whom were student:,.• The
cast was chosen from an Internet
J;eIVice that matches actors to
projects and produc.-ers and
directors to actors.
One of Maxwell's biggest
challenge:) dunng producbon of
the film was finding an afford·
able location. The New York
Public Library quoted MaxwPJI
$1,500 a day location fee and
because of time restrictions,
NYU's main library rules made
it inacc<?Ssible. Finally Maxwell
, found relief. The Library .for
Near East Studies on the NYU
campus just happened to be
closed for th" sununer, perfect
tiuung tO' bcgi.rl production.
Maxwell descnbes her film·
making style as noncommercial
and unusual ·
•Most films are plot driven
and this parllcular film is char·
acter driven," she said. ·nus
film is about a character study
not a story. As an editor I was
more concerned with what it
looks like, rather than the story.
I think commeroal Hollywood
films are so formulated and
smuJar that people want to see
something different."
Maxwell is living m Calif or·
nia agam because the film-
making competition in New
York is fierce
"I think New York is a great
oty for film, there's so much
going on. But so many films are
being made and so many peo-
ple want to be involved that
nobody's getting paid. So [New
York) is not a very practical
place to go and live."
For as far back as she can
remember, films have been an
intngue ~d a goal.
·1 think watching films makes
you go through experiences.·
Maxwell said. •Tue kind of films
I want to make are the ones that
show people the }>erspecbve of
someone that they ought other-
wise never meet. Someone with
whom they might have nothing
in common,"
Though she has never been
to the Newport Beach Interna-

spend a lot of time perusing
the personal ads, it says: •Petite,

Th~ muyor, in this case, is Christi-
na Shea, the good mayor of the
, qreat city of Irvine. and she has an
. interesting tdea.
· The mayor was flipping
through the November issue of
L8d1P.s J iome Journal and
noticed that Irvine placed fourth
on a list of the best U.S. cities for
women. Uhh, OK As an EXMA,
BlA mayor (ex, middle-aged,
balding ltalian-Amencan mayor),
I've dlways wondered how they
come up with these rankings, but
whdt the heck.
On d separate SUJVey that
ranked the most romantic obes

clid not make the cut. Irvine is a
great oty in so many ways, the
mayor observed, •But it is not
known as d romantic city." I
believe that is, um, pretty much
... well, shall we say ... true.
But Chratina has a plan. She
wants to establish a "Romance
Task Force" to make recommen-
dations about raising Irvme's
Cupid quotient. 1be task force
will be all volunteers -and all-
women. Being the boorish,
msensitJve and entirely repug-
nant gnomes that we are, 1 think
excluding men is an excellent
starting point for a task force on
romance. As a friend and former
colleague, I can tell you that,
even though she's half-serious
and having a little fun with this.
Christina will make this work.
When the recommendations
arc in, the county, the nation and
the world will see a new and
romantic IrVine. Pans? Yawn. SdJl

Wowu.•. Sedttle? Fiddle faddle.
It'~ not gomg lo be a cakewalk,

SANTA ANA-For the next two seasons
at ledst, Newport Harbor High will try to

"This tedm won't be on our schedule for
the next few years," Sailors Coach Gregg

the ClF Southern Sectlon Division 11-AA

Thoughts of who'.s commg back next sea-

bad·ed.Ily.
Foothill made its fm.t bve shots, pressed
the daylights out of the at-large Sailors (15·

the operung 16 minutes, leadmg to a 37-12
Foothill lead by the break.

J im Abbott's baseball '1m
career, one of the most 1111111
inspirational m tho
annals of American sport, will
feature a new twist this year.
The Coronel del Mar resident
and former Angel will conltnue
his comeback with th<>
Milwaukee Brawers m the
National League, where the
one-handed pitcher will have to
bat for the first time since high
school.
But the 31 ·year-old Abbott,
who was 5-0 with a 4.55 ERA for
the Chicago White Sox last year
in five late-season starts alter a
successful stint in the minor
leagues, JS looking forward to the
challenge of swmging the stick.
"I'm really excited about it." Jim Abbott '" Abbott told reJ>C?rters last month,
before heading to spnng
trairung.
For Abbott, a member of the
Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame
(to celebrate the millennium), 1t
has been a Wetime of challenges.
. U you had come across Abbott
Abbott would bypass the minor'.' 0
leagues, going straight to the big 1 leagues in 1989. It marked ontya1•
the 15th time since the inception
of the draft in 1965 that a player
made his professional debut in • ., r
the ma1ors. m'
• 1 on the sandlots when he was a
kid and someone had told you he .
was eventually going to throw a
no-lutter for the New York Yan·
kees, you'd have wondered from
where that person had just
escaped.
But Abbott defied all the odd ,_
When Abbott was a high
schooJ star io Michigan, baseball
observers never worried about .
his fastball or slide(,
determination or temperament.
His stuff was major league, his
spuit like a ~aint. It was his nght
hand (or lack of one) that
womed scouts.
But despite being born
without a right hand, Abbott
proved he could field his posiuon
on the mound and even swmg
the bat as well as anybody.
Hitters qwckly learned never to
bunt off hlm.
He would pounce on bunto;,
change his glove from resting on
his handles~ arm, pick up the
ball, transfer it and throw out the
baserunner as effloenUy as
anybody.
So the University of Michigan
gave the boy wonder (and role
model to hundreds of disabled
people) a baseball scholarship.
Abbott didn't disappomt,
· becoming a celebrated amateur
betore turning pro.
In 1988, Abbott won the
Golden Sptkes Award (hononng
the country's top collegiate
baseball player), helped Team
USA capture the gold medal at
the Seoul Olympic Games and
secured the coveted Sullivan
Award, which salutes the
nation's best amateur athlete.
The Angels selected him No.
1 in tl)e June 1988 tree-agent
draft (eighth pick overall) and
Abbott continued to answer " ... ,
every challenge. He made the •J.U":
Topps All-Star rookie team in '89
and posted a 12·12 record with 111 11 four complete games and two uuo
shutouts, becoming the first
left-handed Angel rookie to pos:t-
wms m double figures since
FTdnk Tanana m 1974.
At>bOtt's bCSt year with {h •
Angels came in 1991, going
18-11 with a 2.89 ERA in 243
inrungs pitched, finishing third
behind Roger Clemens and
Kevin Tapani in the American
League Cy Young Award voting.
But on Dec. 6, 1992, many
fans were ready to cover their
eyes when the AngelS traded
therr beloved Abbott to the
Yankees f~r two pitchers and
then-rookie first baseman J .T.
Snow.
Abbott, prdlSed by a number
of chanties because of the time
he volunteers for disadvantdged
children in Southern Calilomia,
was embraced by New York
fans. On Sept. 4. 1993, he joined
a select company when he
tos ed a no-hitter against
Cleveland.
In 1995, he signed with
Chicago cis a free agent, then
was traded back to the Angels
m July, starting 13 games dJld
posting a 5·4 record.
But Abbott struggled m 1996
and was demoted to the mmors
for the first tlme m his career.
He led the Amencan League m
los es that year, going 2-18 wtth
the Angels, before the club
released him the next spring.
Abbott, out of baseball for
most of 1997 and '98, made a
comeback with the White Sox
last year and could be on his
way to making more news in
Milwaukee.

Endeavour, Captain Cook's
1768 voyage reenacted, and
it will be here, April 16. .
Lieutenant James Coak
sailed the 110-ft. H.M . Bark
Endeavour on a voyage that
would forever change the world
some 231 years ago. The ship
was a converted coal carrier
(collier) and ls perhaps the best
khown ship of world exploration
and navigation in maritime'
history.
A non-profit organization from
Australia, known as the H.M.
Bark Endeavour Foundation,
completed the project of
constructing an exact replica of
Cook's ship to reenact the
three-year voyage that began
' in 1768.
John Longely, CEO of the
Endeavour Foundation, was this
week's guest speaker at the
Wednesday Yachtsmen
Luncheon held at the Newport
1-Jarbor YC.
Longely, a veteran of five
Australian America's Cup
campaigns, said, vcook's ship
was originally commissioned as
the Earl of Pembroke. She was
renamed Endeavour for Cook's
expedition. Our ship 1S a 98%
e:xact museum replica - she's a
time machine.•
The H.M. Bark Endeavour is'
currently on the North American
leg of her voyage and will be
sailing into Newport Beach April
16. Tbis incredible replica of .
history will be open for tours,
under the direction of the
' Newport Harbor Nautical
Museum, through April 25.

sailed southwest to prove or

known as Australia.
He followed the coast and
anchored m what he named
•sota.ny Bay• near where
Sydney is today. In addition,
Cook is credited with the
discovery of the Hawaiian
Islands and other dots upon the
globe noted for coconuts and
palm trees.
When he ·discovered•
Hawaii, he really didn't know
where he was, that was until he
asked a 'local brah' who told him
he'd landed in a place called
Honolulu.
The locals, out of courtesy to a
visitor, continued to educate
Cook on exactly what he'd
discovered. Cook was later killed
in Hawa.il.
