The women and their children are offered housing for up to 12 months. Dunng that time, the mothers are given counseling. job trai.rung, finanoal plan- rung and child-care programs to help them develop the skills to become seU- support.µ1g and break the vicious cycle of domestic violence. Our league helped buy the apart- ment building and continues to prQ!Wide many servtces fo the families Long was orgcmizing an evening activity for the Second Step women, but she wondered if the planned tnp to a beauty salon was what they needed the most. She cdl.led and asked Lydia Pettis, who •~ the program drrector there. "Lydia told me that what she thought the women really needed was a chance to be around othet women·, to en1oy female companionship," Long said. Long invited women fTom National Chanty League to share an evening with the women from Second Step. But with this boom comes a dearth of competent people behind the cash reg1stt!rs of many of the stores in town. Recently, I tried to find a rer· tam compucl disc. It is a fttirly popular one, not by any mNns hord to fmd, or so l thought. ln an effort to let my lingers do the Wcilkmg, I called a few stores to locate my music, At the first ·record" store, a populdr one m Costa Mesa, the young man on the phone was polite, but he had no idea how to work the store's computer catalog to determine whether the store carried the CD. Too bad because he also said the computer would tell us il 1t was in stock. Wus there anyone else there who could help? WHAT'S UP ·ves," came the reply, "But the store is really busy now, and I can't get him on the phone. Can you call back in a little while?" At the second store, another one m Costa Mesa, there was a similar response to my inquiry. ·The person in charge ol thdt department won't be in until noon today.
