SANTA ANA -Mark Richard
Hilbun, the ex-postal worker who
murdered two people and attempted
to kill 5eVen others dwing a 1993
rampage, leceived multiple life sen-
tences, two without possibility of
parole, in Orange County Superior
Court on Tuesday.
Superior Court Judge Everett W.
Dickey gave Hilbun nine life sen-
tences on top of nearly 32 years in
state prison for 15 felony counts,
including murder, attempted murder,
attempted kidnapping. robbery and
burglary. .
The sentence came after those
touched by the May 1993 killing
spree spoke to the court.
Patricia Salot, the Costa Mesa
woman who suffered six wounds
from Hilbun's gun and sUll carries
bullet fragments in her face, publicly
forgave the man she claimed "raped"
her of her life.
"I lost my family," said Salot, 52.
"My marriage is not solid .... I'm
. financially destitute." The attack tleft
"constant reminders in my body, in
my face, in my arm."
But she faced the killer and said,
"Mark. I forgive you for what you did
to me," adding she would pray for his
soul.

Other victtms were less forgiving.
Elizabeth Shea, 31, one of three
victims shot by Hi).bun at an ATM
machine in Fountain Valley,
described how his bullet fractured
her skull and entered her brain. Sur-
geons had to install a UtaniUJil plate
in her head, she said, and she sUll suf-

"I've got all my faculties about me,

Later, she said, MI don't forgive
him. I'm not going to lie. No, I don't

Hilbun fatally stabbed his mother,
Frances, in her Corona del · Mar
home. He also killed fellow postal
worker Charles Barbagallo. During
the trial, Deputy District Attorney
Chris Evans argued that Hilbun's
killing spree stemmed from his
obsession with Kim Springer, a Dana
Poi,nt post office co-worker. He
stalked her when she"-spumed his
advances. ·
The defense team claimed Hilbun
was.insane, saying he suffered apoc-
alyptic 'delusions and thought he and
Springer would live as M Adam and
Eve" in Baja California.
. The ·only time ·HilbUB-tumed his
OLE
head Tuesday was to glance briefiy at
Springer when she took the podium
to address the court.
"Sane or not, this person's capable
of doing so much damage to people's
lives, it's unbelievable," said
Springer, 33.

Costa Mesa to dis~
pushcart r~gulation
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -The City CoUncn is expected Monday to
further dillcuss regulating or pro-
hibiting pusbcartl, vending trucks
and other lidewa1k Wildon doing
businea in relidential areu.
Although the, council voted
against an outright ban of push-
cart vendors in f 990, dty leaders
in. January 1991 adopted a law
that makes it a lilisdemeauor to
sell food from carts \ll))ess a ven-
dor obtains a license from the dty
and certification from the county
Health Care Agency.
But residents' complaints about
noise, traffic and safety concerns
involving vendors have continued.
And most vendors do not wear
green unifonns and identification
tags as required under the law,
residents said at a study session in
November.
City Council members agreed.
to consider a new ordinance after
a gfoup of Iota! property owners in
the Wallace Avenue and Pomona
Street area told olfid.als the vend-
ing trucks have continued to be a
nuisance in the community.
Mayor Peter Buffa said the dty
will not seek an outright ban of
pushcarts and street vending vehi-
cles.
•0th~ cities have tried it and
other dties have failed,• Buffa
said •Our direction was to come,.
baCk with an ordinance that puts
restrictions on push carts ... we can

and buant prob1eml that IOme of
them create.• .
1be draft ordiMnce offen the
dty thiee opUom In addition to
beefing up enforcement of tegula-
tlom.
City Attorney Tom Kathe said.
those options include:
• A ban oo all sidewalk vend·
ing.
• Allowing sidewalk vendors in
certain areas, wblle prohibiting
them in otben.
• Prob1bit1ng vendors tram dis-
turbing residents with noisy homs
and jingles.
· 1b1s third alternative is similar
to ordinances recently approved in
Huntington Beach and AMheim.
Vendors in those dtles are prohib-
ited from sounding off horns to
attract customers; their parking
time is limited; and they are
allowed only in designated areas. ·
•1t doesn't ban vending vehi-
cles, it imposes ~' place and
manner or parking regulations on
them,• Kathe said.
The dty recently reseatched 13
Orange County cities that have
municipal codes directly aimed at
street vendors, including produce
and catering trucks. 1be report
found ol)ly those cities that com-
pletely banned street vendors
found peace from the noise.
City staff is recommending the
City Council direct the Planning
Commission to gather more infor-
mation.

kept praising the Lord.
That led to such exchanges

And Hollyfield would answer

The Lord was in their comers,
too, they told us after the games.
Now before you jump all over
me, let m e say I admire their
faith and the gratitude for it that
makes it possible for them to
wear it on their sleeves. 'I am not
-repeat NOT -making fun of
their strong religious convic-
tions. What troubles me is carry-
ing over the influence of the
Almighty into the outcome of a
physical contest that presumably
involves other of God's children.
That God would take sides in
such an encounter seems frivo-
lous and demeaning of the
Almighty to me -even when
the opponent is so demonstrably
full of the devil as Mike 'fyson
or the Dallas Cowboys. Bad
guys if ever I've seen bad guys.
Although I ad.m1t it is a purely
personal prejudice, I consider
my religious convictions a pri-
vate matter between me and my
God. I had plenty of opportuni-
ties during a war to examine
and apply theui. and if asked
under the proper conditions, I
will be glad to discuss those
feelings. But it would never
occur to me to relate them to the
outcome of a sporting event. Or
a political election. Or the lot-
tery.
Now if these sports figures
had said something like: "Thank
God I survived the carnage out
there today in one piece and
had the energy and skill to give
a good account of myself," I
could go along with that. It
wouldn't be my style, but that's
a different matter.
But when God is thanked for
victory in a purely material con-
test, it canies with it the strong
implication that the winners
were on the side of God and the
losers weren't. And that's a
totally contradictory thesis, even
when the opponents have been
convicted in a court of public
opinion as really bad guys.
It's also possible that the guys
on the other side have a quite
different view of the Deity or
believe in prophets other than '
Jesus or -perhaps -none at
all. That doesn't, it seems to me,
make them any less God's chil-
dren or second-class citizens in a
sporting contest. And what will
happen when two quarterbacks
-or two boxers -with equally
strong convictions that God is on
their side come up against one
another? Can we have eternal
ties? Is God always into winners
and losers? Or just us?
It's an easy leap, indeed, from
Beautiful Hair!
arrogating God to our side in
higbly debatable human atfalrs
-and especially sporting con-
tests -to believing that the end
justifies the me~. If a litUe
cribbing on an exam here or a
litUe stretching of election rule$
th~re are necessary to teach the
bad guys who don't believe as
we do a lesson, God will surely
look the other way.
Praise flle Lord and pass the
ammunition, and we'll all give
poit-game interviews.
Just in case anybody is upset
with the thoughts expressed
above. however, I'd like to add /
that I'll be more than happy to
thank whomever is appropriate
if I win even a small piece of the
lottery. Hell, I'll even do i.t on
TV.

The onslaught continued for
three quarters, as the four-time

lead to 59-27, before settling for a
64-40 verdict.
The triumph extended the

Harbor's offens~ with their own

Costa Mesa's Koo Kim has
all the answers for Aliso
Niguel's taunting crowd;
Mustangs put some 'TLC'
~ into their 'TBC' tactics.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
AUSO VIEJO -It was Koo
Kiin who set the record straight
for Costa Mesa High's girls bas-
ketball team Tuesday night in the
Pacific Coast League opener, but
it was Coach Shontel Sherwood's
TBC (Team Ball Control) that
made the difference in the end.
With a boisterous section of
Aliso Niguel students blurting
"Ball hog! Ball hog!" every time
Kim put her hands on the ball,
the standout seruor guard trig-
gered Mesa's second-half surge
as the Mustangs defeated the
Wolverines, 51-39.
•vou could hear them," Kim
said of the echoing chants in the
spacious Aliso Niguel gymnasi-
um. "But (injured teammate)
Kristina Watanabe said don't lis·
ten to them."
Though Kim heard the taunt-
ing loud and clear, she made it a
point to get in the last word. That
would be swish.
After Aliso Niguel (12-4, 0-1 in
PCL) pulled to within two points
in the third quarter, Costa Mesa
(11-7, 1-0) pulled away-thanks
to Kim, who scored half of her
game-high 20 points in the peri-
od.
Three times Aliso Niguel was
behind by two in the third. but
Kim hit one of her four three-
pointers with 3:36 on the clock.
then .sank two free throws with
1:25 left.
Kim also drained a buzzer-
beating three from 35 feet to end
the third quarter and give Costa
Mesa a 41-33 edge, a seemingly
decisive advantage considering
the Mustangs turned the ball
over only once in the fourth quar-
ter.
"We've been working really
hard the last week on blocking
out and taking care of the ball.•
Sherwood said.
Mesa, which committed only
eight turnovers in the game, five
in the second halt, received a
huge performance from senior
center Chantay Peyton, who wu
not only asked to guard 6-foot-2
Brooke Hyman (20 points per
game), but she grabbed 11
rebounds and added seven
points, two assists and a pair ol
blocked shots.
Peyton allO hit a key jumper
witlt 2:19 left in tbe geme thet.
