Time to pick our
cookie favorltes
• EOrTOR'S NOTE: We asked Diane Smith, pub-
lic relations dtrector for the Girl Scout Coun<1l of
Orange County, about the annual ~le of Gir1
Scout cookies.. which r\4nS until M.lrc.h 14.
Why do Girl Scouts sell cookies?
So the girls can learn goal-setting,
teamwork and dec~1on-malcing skills; so
that troops can earn money for special
dctivilie~; and so that the council can
extt>nd programming for all our mem-
bers.
What are the best ways to sell them 7
In two ways, really Pre-orders. where
girls sell pnmarily through their family,
fnt!nds, and netghbors; and booth sales,
which is when thQ guts are m neighbor·
hood shopping areas, malls, grocery
stores.
How many boxes do Girt Seo~ typi-
c.atJy sell?
I don't know the average per girl, but
m Orange County, about 20.000 Girl
Scouts sold more than 2 million boxes in
1998.
What are the favorite cookies?
Thin Mints (mmt-flavored chocolate)
and Sarnoas (coconut and caramel). That
hold true both in Orange County and
nationally.
How many boxes have you bought
this year?
Actually, none yet. I buy them from
the girls in front of stores when I'm out
shoppmg.

These are not random
anomalies, ladies and gentleman.
One argument for dlwrunum
bats: lt saves money. Wood bats
are not only vulnerable to ins1dc
pitches, but can also shatter
when hitters try to pull outside
offenngs.
But wood bats can still be
purchased for as little as $10,
while quality a1ununum bat:>
start at $100.
Additionally, there is still a
certain mystique that goe!) with
the crack of a LoUisVille Slugger.
There is no such reverence for
the ping of alwrunum.
Put a wood bat in a guy's
hands and pitchers can work
inside all day long Seldom does
a guy get sawed off and
rewarded (I'm thmkmg of Jack
Howell's busted-bat home run d
few years back).
Sunilar eftorts to throw inside

If d hitter cdll tum on d pitch,
great. By all means hammer it
down the line. But if not. a
pitcher deserves lo be rewdtdcd
with a pop-up or groundout
-and maybe even a lutter left
standing at the plate with a mere
piece of lundling.
I'm tired of the debate, and so
are a lot of people for that matter.

do you really think that five dia-
monds is the best contract? Smee
your opening bid was a game force.
you could pass to see what partner

W111u do you bid now?
A · First. your all prime hand with
an excellent five-card sun is too
5trong for even a 16-18 opening one
no trump. Now you are 1n an awk·

three hearts is not rccommended
with only thrce·card support.
Therefore, make a rnenc bid of two
diamonds, forcina in the modem
style, and hope partner cu rebid two

A • When you have Che perfect

worry if you have to shave the high·
